I am having Hybrid thoughts.... Golf GTE

Featured Replies

It is also food for thought when you consider that the worlds 15 biggest ships create more pollution than all of the cars in the world, petrol and diesel...

Don't tend to see too many of those in cities where people tend to live , at least not my way .

With that outlook then we should all move to the country and forget all about the effects of air pollution.

No we should ban large ships and diesel cars from city centres , the latter is already happening

Any vehicle burning a fossil fuel will produce noxious gas and nasties, a small diesel car is no threat compared to a bus or truck. Tailpipes of a diesel car are spotlessly clean, petrol cars have black sooty pipes, therefore particulates must be present from a petrol car.

.

My petrol car has squeaky clean exhausts , my diesels have always gone sooty very quickly

If your diesel CR170 Superb has a sooty tail pipe then the DPF isn't working correctly.

No longer have a dpf on it but it's not the first dpf equipped car I've had

If diesels are so clean why does the engine oil go black instantly ?

No point arguing this though the evidence for diesels is out there

Have you ever been to Dover?   A thick cloud of black smoke drifts across the town from the ferries.

I agree pollution is an evil of modern life but we all have to agree that pollution levels have never been so low, cast your mind back twenty years (assuming you are a more mature Brisky member) you will remember such things as buses that sent out plumes of black smoke, diesel cars that also smoked, along with Petrol cars that had no catalytic converters or Lambdas etc to clean things up, we even had Concorde in the air spraying black smoke and unspent aviation fuel over everything below from the Olympus engines.

None of this has done us any harm.

If you are so concerned about pollution why has your DPF been removed?

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2589649/Britains-worst-towns-air-pollution-revealed-campaigners-warn-urgent-measures-needed.html

Tens of thousands die in the UK each year and about 7 million worldwide

I do remember buses and trucks spewing out big clouds and I worked in the industry , can't help think that it must have had some impact on my own health and perhaps why i developed asthma

Problem is that things appear much different but the health risks are just as bad

If you are so concerned about pollution why has your DPF been removed?

The dpf doesn't stop pollution and didn't function well that's why I removed it. If the technology solved the problem I'd buy another tomorrow

As we all live longer the problem will get worse, more people making more pollution for longer.   Not sure what he answer is, even if the clock was turned back and we all got around on Horses, I expect methane would be an issue from the Horse...

The answer is not to live in a major city so you have a better chance of breathing fresh air..

It catches the particulates that get into your lungs and cause asthma amongst other things, this is an improvement and goes towards reducing the smog in the city..

Anyway, the thread is about buying a hybrid car and not all the tosh we have rattled on about in the above posts, can we get back on thread now as pollution really is not something I will loose sleep about.  Thanks.

It doesn't catch the particulates it reduces the larger ones but not the more dangerous nano particles at the expense of increases in hydrocarbons (which produces smog) and NOx

I think one of the things we can do is to help reduce emissions and take a personal responsibility for it , every little bit helps as they say .

The issue isn't so much with particulates you can see, it's the ultrafine PM10, PM2.5, PM1 that your lungs can't filter out that are the issue. I agree 100% though that pollutions levels are lower and decreasing, but I also think knowledge of what impacts on health pollution can have is increasing.

Guys the ultra fine particulates, really?

I work in the packaging industry and they bang on about migration of packaging parts that can change the organoleptic make up of the food within, limits used to be 60 parts per million that was acceptable, now it is 10 parts per billion, that is like dropping a sugar cube into a super tanker and saying find it, the reason the limit is so low is because they can find things at this microscopic level, in europe certain chemicals are banned from being used in packaging however in the USA the very same substances can be added to food to act as a preservative, even your shower gel and sun tan cream uses these same banned substances yet you can rub them all over your body, I see this in the same way ludicrous when you speak about nano particles coming from a diesel car, it is ludicrous to even look for them, when they are found somebody has to ban them, or develop something else, then that gets banned and eventually the human race will ban everything, then where will we be?

Get real people, nano particulate's indeed...    The human race is already living too long, nursing homes crammed with inadequate care etc, who wants to live forever?

Thanks for your input Richf but it is not needed now because I do not care about emissions nor nano particles, NOx or smog (I don't live or visit cities) so can we get back on thread?

 SO.....

Do you own a hybrid? If you do what is it like to live with and what should I consider when thinking of purchasing one?

Thank god someone on my level!

Everything is bad... Then its good.

Its like all this nonsense about food!

Butter is bad.... Nooo butter is now good... Bad again.... Good again.

Eating bacon increases the risks of cancer!

Well blow me away who actually cares. More smoke more poke and all that, fluff you eco warriors go hug a tree

Take a look at what large ships burn, and theres your answer. Not nice fuel. Even engines themselves cant burn it without it being heated first.

Same here, I was set on an A6 Avant SE as it just scrapes in to my CC budget, then I went on Comcar.co.uk and worked out the tax.

Audi A6, £350 a month extra tax paid

Golf GTE or Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV £100 a month in tax

Both including fuel.

So I could basically give myself a £250 a month pay rise if I went hybrid!

I've had a lease price for  a GTE on a 25k mile per year contract, £400.96 + VAT, the nearly top spec Mitsi comes in about the same.

Or I have been looking at the Focus ST3 Diesel Estate, or the Audi E-Tron, or the Golf GTD Estate or a Mercedes E220 SE Estate or an Audi A4 Avant SE Tech or a Passat GT Estate.

Or a Van.

I really can't decide!

I always find it surprising how many people with company cars have no idea how much they pay in BIK payment. I've always worked it out just so I don't get any nasty surprises, and the 5% of the Golf GTE is very appealing in this respect.

I've just run it through Comcar http://comcar.co.uk/newcar/companycar/taxcalc/g1select.cfm and the figures are as shown.

As the GTE is DSG 5 door I used a GTD DSG 5 door so like for like (figures assuming 40% tax rate of pay).

Golf GTD DSG: Tax year 2014/15 £2242

                                        2015/16 £2467

                                        2016/17 £2355

                                        Total £7064

Golf GTE DSG: Tax year 2014/15 £660

                                        2015/16 £660

                                        2016/17 £923

                                        Total £2243

So financially the GTE saves a 40% tax payer £4821 over three years (or £1607/year, or £133.92/month).

That's good enough for me alone.

The above two posts are the exact reason I am looking at the GTE Golf, it really is a no brainer with 200 bhp and a GTI look a like it ticks a lot of boxes especially the money in your pocket box.

  • 1 month later...

Any further thoughts or developments James?

I was bored late this arvo at work and was browsing the VW site - the Passat GTE comes out later this year and I would be keen to test one. Again from a purely selfish perspective, the reduction in BIK would be immense.

Similar to the Golf, it claims 31 miles on electric power, with combined 45g/km emissions.

Furthermore with unleaded approx. 5p per litre cheaper than diesel (on average), there would be slight financial benefits for the company.

We had a Merc hybrid demonstrator at work last week, it was a decent piece of kit, used hardly any fuel and drove really well with plenty of get up and go!

The boss is making noises about a Tesla for himself and is in agreement to hybrids being on the company car menu, he will also install a charge point at home that work pay the bill for!

VW should have had the GTE in the UK by now but it is not at our local dealer yet, so test drive is booked once the car arrives and depending on what I think the GTE could be here as soon as October this year.

I will post up some pictures and a bit of a review when I have driven it.
