I am having Hybrid thoughts.... Golf GTE

Featured Replies

Well the MPG will depend on what type of driving and mode you are in.

I've done just over 2k from new, I charge whenever possible.

I don't pay any attention to the official MPG though as again it would purely depend on how its driven.

For example I can drive home to work, get charged for free, drive to town, do some shopping in town, charge again where possible and drive home, mixture of motorway at 70 mph, a and b roads, and city roads.

Around trip of about 60 miles all on free electric so MPG quoted is meaningless as I haven't used any petrol.

I had heard that there were a load of dealer demo cars that didn't have carnet fitted, and tbh its handy to have but not a deal breaker if you get a good price.

You can start the aircon etc from the head unit by setting up departure times, so can still get it warmed/cooled before you set off.

Had a ride in our friends new Audi A3 e-tron over the weekend.

Very nice!

The ride was lovely. Nice and firm feeling but plenty of give in it over speed bumps etc.

They had theirs specced right up (although not sure what was/wasn't standard). It had LED matrix headlights, lane assist, auto brake, adaptive cruise, Audi connect sat-nav (4G sim card in the dash) heated seats etc etc.

It was so lovely and quiet but then when he floored it and the rev counter went all the way round to "boost" it doesn't have shift and sounds lovely!

He commutes to Manchester from Nottingham on Monday and returns on a Friday. With a full charge he gets between 55-65mpg (dash board- depending how clear the traffic is). Considering how quick this thing can slingshot itself forwards to be able to get that economy is impressive.

Plus when they use it over the weekend for shopping etc it doesn't use a drop of petrol. A shopping centre they regularly visit also has a free charging point which they use to top-up with while shopping.

Seeing a fair number of Golf GTE's out and about now.

Before it was the very occasional 15 plate, but now its quite a few 65 plate.

The front light arrangement making them easy to spot.

The rear badge making them not so easy to.

I like very much the concept,

and it would be nice if Skoda did a version as i am not a Golf / Polo fan.

Maybe something VW can get on with approving by allowing Skoda to access the Parts Bins.

My mindset is definitely changing from diesel manual cars to DSG Hybrid and one of these is very appealing given it's looks - I'd have to reserve final judgment until I'd driven one.  Trouble is, as a private purchaser, the deals aren't very affordable still.

If I could put a whole bank of solar cells on my house roof I would get a GTE or a Teslar (now they have a Scottish dealer).......

I really would like to get a Budd-e if VW do build them.

Just been reading about it.

I am still happy with my Golf, it is great fun when in GTE mode and this mode also charges the battery when driving hard and heavy braking, I have covered 10,000 miles now and the first service was carried out between Christmas and New Year, a simple oil change on the 1.4 tsi which I hasten to add has used no oil at all, nothing which for a VAG 1.4 is good, ask any MK 2 Fabia VRS owner.

So far, I have been charging the car at work as still not got a charge point at home, now it is winter, lights on and wipers, heated mirrors and the heater the claimed 30 odd miles from a charge only provides 15 miles when driving normally, i.e blowing other cars off at the traffic lights  :D  but if driven carefully allowing for coasting and over run etc 18-20 miles is max! Using petrol in any mode, Battery Hold, Battery charge, GTE and hybrid auto mode it manages about 55 mpg however the trip computer shows 42 mpg as it only measures the petrol usage, electric usage is measured in KwH per mile.

Tyre wear is excessive, 10,000 miles in and there is 3.5mm left on the front, Bridgestones, I do not wheel spin as the car is automatic but so not sure why the tyres have worn so quick.

Would I have another? - Yes

Will hybrids only get better? - I think they will

Is there any compromise with a Hybrid? - No not that I have noticed.

Get away from this DPF rubbish and join the modern age, eventually you will have to.

Not enough Daylight at this time of year up here.....

Only costs about 50p to charge it up

I would reckon that's down to vehicle weight. There's quite a bit of mass to speed up and slow down.

Well I've traded my Octavia for a Toyota Auris hybrid, it's not in the same league as GTE Golf but after a week of ownership I love it.

Glad it's going well James, shame our fleet scheme wouldn't extend to hybrid but there we go.

I was in Leeds before Christmas. Hunslett Area, Garnet Road and passed a white GTE in traffic, might have been you. Twas 22nd December about 9-10am time.

How the Golf has grown, MK2 and MK7

I would consider going hybrid, but id need to do some checking out as i get a mileage allowance, rather than company car and bik, which is based on engine size - max rate is on capacity over 1500cc, below that is about 60% of what i get with the octy. And.. given how new all the hybrids are, i couldnt drive it to half the place i stick the octy without feeling really guilty.

swmbo on the other hand.. may be getting some oroper looking done later this yr to chop the citigo against..

An update on life with the GTE, I have now done 13,000 miles in it and have to say I think it is a great car, it goes well, is a nice place to sit in, although a little thirsty for a 1.4 petrol car it is on the whole not bad, returning 44 mpg.

There has been one problem, after the car had been on charge the indicated mileage would only be 12 or 14, I called the dealer who told me to call VW assist, this I did and the guy came out, plugged the computer in and it showed 101 faults all to do with the electric part of the car, he shut his laptop and said this is a job for the dealer, in the car went, a courtesy car was waiting, Skoda Octavia Greenline Poverty Spec, the door handles weren't even painted!!

Anyway, after two days I got a call, I was told the charging lead was the problem and one had been ordered, it would be replaced under warranty, out of interest the guy said, how much do you think the lead is?  No Idea I replied and guessed at about £200, he replied with £894+VAT, I couldn't believe it.  Lead is now in my possession and the Golf is back too, problem sorted.

I do wonder how this type of car will continue into the used car market and how a second hand car buyer will cope with the high costs associated with any repairs!

Holy Electrons thats one expensive extension lead!!!!

Probably very badly. But the manufacturers will likely be delighted to have everyone on lease cars.

CAAS - Car as a service.

All E-Golf's in the USofA being recalled for Software Updates, but no mention of them or E-Up's in other World Regions, so it must be a usual VW eup wait and see in Yorkshire and the rest of the world, stalling will not kill you, and if it does we pay out less rhan in the United States. Maybe more R&D needed on VW EV'S & Hybrids before they realky get then rolled out and some idea how they are when they have no warranty, or VW could put 7 years warranty on them.

Buy a Toyota/Lexus :)

Buy a Toyota/Lexus :)

Why?    The Hybrid part in most cars is almost the same, we had a Mitsubishi PHEV in work last week and under the bonnet the electric part of the engine looked exactly the same as what the Golf has under the bonnet.

My post above mentions issues with the charge lead, everything else is working very well.

Just bought myself a Lexus CT200h. Exact same as a Prius but with Lexus luxury. Really enjoying it after 2 days. It takes some getting used to driving a hybrid to get the economy. I just need to back off the right foot to keep in EV mode. Managed briefly to get 69mpg(instant mpg ) but at the moment it's about 58ish.

Bit of a change from Citigo/Rapid to luxury brand, hope your Lexus experience is an enjoyable one :)

Did you consider a Golf GTE?

Sorry for daft questions but does the golf come with charge cable with normal plug or does it require special socket? Also does battery and petrol motors both power front wheels only

Thanks. Yes it's great so far. I didn't want any more from VAG. This came up at the right price and spec.
