Regular oil changing

Such

Recommended Posts

I have decided that having had just 3 oil changes in 55.000 miles (variable) and car being out of warranty next month, I will be changing the oil every 4-6 months, approx 8000 - 12000 miles.

I am sure this can only be good for the car.

I have read that oil is oil as long as it meets the VW 507.00 spec, and there are a few to choose from.

Has anyone used these oils instead of castrol edge 5w30?

Seems very cheap?

Gets good reviews.

Are these any better than Castrol?

The prices seem very reasonable for 5l, I will be paying the chaps at TMC canterbury for the oil changes and an annual service in Dec

Thanks

Out of spec? It's rated good for VAG 504 and 507...

My question would be why use a non-branded oil, and then source it from Germany?

Lots of VW 507 5 litre branded oils available from the UK for the same price...

I change the oil and filter every 5000 miles with Shell Helix Ultra 507.00. Runs sweet. The AV-L is slightly different than the Helix I have used before but still 507.00 spec.

Liqui Moly seems very popular in europe, and the specs are more or less identical to Castrol edge. I bought from ebay in the end, 5l for £40 inc an engine flush treatment,

The cheapest i have seen castrol edge 4l was £30 at asda, but i would still need another litre at another £12+

Would a 3yr old 58k cr need an engine flush?

Thanks

I just get the genuine stuff for £27.

Sometimes your stealer will do a deal on a box of 4 cheaper than this.

ASDA now do their own brand oil to vw / audi 507 spec as well.

The Quantum price of £28 delivered is very good, a reputable Audi dealer too by the looks of it.

However, be very careful when buying oil on eBay, there is a lot of fake stuff around these days. They use the same containers and even have the seals intact.

The fake stuff is that convincing they don't even need to sell it cheaper either.

Be wary about buying online.

I wouldn't recommend an engine flush unless completely necessary. They often do more harm than good.

Releasing and freeing up all that sludge and debris is great if you can guarantee the flush will remove it all. However anything left behind is then free to move around the engine and cause more issues than when it was sat somewhere before using the flush.

Mike, I tried that at Halfords in York, the old goat behind the counter wanted to see invoices to prove I was in the trade

This was a year or two ago, it might be worth another go!

I've got the same oil in the garage waiting to go in the Superb...

I also noticed that the OEM oil filter for my CR140 was branded MANN...

I'm tempted with the link from scottalej, £28 for 5 litres of Quantum Longlife delivered to your door...

VW 507.00, cheap as chips!

Can I just ask....what is wrong with 502.00 5w40 oil?

The OP's car is fitted with a DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) so requires VW 507.00 oil.

When you look at the price of the VW 507.00 oil linked above it really doesn't make sense to use anything else.

highjacking this thread...

planning to do the remap so was thinking to swich from variable to fixed servicing. Question is do I need to stay on 507.00 oil or can I get on 505.01 which I used on fabia and was recemmended for pd engines on fixed intervals?

It depends -- if you have a DPF fitted then no, you should be using only 507 spec oil

Mike

No Mike, it's 2008 without dpf.

It's not a problem to pay few quid more than for 505.01 but I have few liters of that oil left so wanted to know if I can use it and stick with it.

Cheers

I have canceled the order for LiquiMoly and now ordered 10l of Quantum plus 2 oil filters from Cardiff audi, using the link provided by scottalej.

Thanks for your comments, that is my servicing for this year sorted - well at least oil anyway!

Yep, you'll be fine with the 505.01!

Do my own servicing/mechanics as much as possible. Had this Vrs for 3 years come May and then it will be getting it's 4th service under my stewardship (did it as soon as I got it and then put it straight on fixed/yearly intervals). Use Mobil1 ESP 5w30. Wont have done 15,000 yet in that time but I don't care you don't scrimp on decent oil and doing a 'yearly' service. This variable interval servicing is complete crap. It can't do any car any good being able to go a possible 2 years/20,000 between oil changes. You see the adverts on Autotrader and the like. FDSH and it's like a 10 year old car with 100,000+ miles and had about 5 services in that time FFS  :x

If your vRS is a petrol engine then there's nothing wrong with it if you are on fixed service interval.  If you're on variable you need 504 which is only available in 5w-30.

Keep in mind that 502.00 is a pretty old spec and 504 does outperform it in terms of wear & piston deposits.
