Self Driving Cars

Featured Replies

In my view, you need a fully integrated system which include the car and all the external influences bearing on the car, not just the Mickey Mouse Google, collision detection and avoidance mechanism.

Well the 'mickey mouse' Google system has racked up nearly 1.8 million miles in testing with only 14 accidents, 13 of which were deemed to be the other vehicles fault...

I would suggest that many of the issues you detailed above have been considered, if not implemented yet

I don't disagree about the full connectivity though, however the cars will still need to operate where this isn't available

There was an international symposium held in Melbourne recently: Inteligent Transport Systems is taking input from all over the world by those with a stake in this move to eliminate the 'driver' from the risk equation.

The process isn't just inevitable its approach is accelerating.

Looking forward to seeing the self-driving cars, vans, busses etc on the roads and them seeing me.

Me too

Just look at all those positive buzz words; revolution.... improve..... safety..... better..... new jobs..... created.... industry.... £billion.... support..... investment..... fund..... all in just three bullet points.

It almost sounds too good to be true.  I can hardly contain my excitement and that warm glow inside.

Gaz

Grant Shapps MP has made every attempt to make the UK roads safer or to fly kites and spend time and money looking into things and funding technology research.

People were having to use cars & bikes and roads more during Covid to avoid public transport and now during industrial actions.

He has allowed people to tow trailers caravans without any training, people are driving without passing driving tests because they could not get tests.

He has introduced pilot schemes for e-Scooters and want them legalised.

He wants people to be able to drive HGV's without training or tests.

He wants cyclists to have registration plates and insurance while many vehicle drivers have no licences, insurance or MOT's on vehicles.

What is the worst that can happen?

Grant Shapps being run over by a driverless car 🤷‍♀️

Oh, sorry. You said the 'worst that could happen'.

Plenty busses around the country have no drivers to take them out.

Great to see there is no un-employment among people with a PSV licence or people that could get one.

In Inverness there is a bus that needs no driver.

Once they teach it where it actually has to go then all might be well.

My standard comment on this,

If I can legally pour myself into the back of a self driving car drunk as a skunk and slur at it to take me home, then and only then, I'm interested.

If the car drives but I'm responsible, then nope I don't want it.

tbh I have a few unpleasent experienced with 'intelligent' cruise control to make me think that right now even that is a step too far.

Mark Harper MP and Secretary of State for Transport is on about how soon we might see self driving vehicles on UK motorways.  The technology being in place and it is just then needing to push through legislation.   We will see.  He will be the ex Secretary of State for transport and the state of transport long before self driving passenger cars are legally on the roads.  The Government is desperate to get HGV,s driving in convoy though.  So much public money having been thrown the way of some.

Works well right up to the moment they don't
