Paint damage?

Featured Replies

So just finished washing and noticed the paint blistering on the headlight washer cover. Did take a picture but cant work out how to load it off my iphone. Anyway, there is what looks to be a stone chip on it, but i dont think the paint should have blistered despite that damage. The cars not even a year old yet and is always washed carefully with snowfoam the 2 bucket method. Finished by a coat of sonax bsd.

When you say blistering, would I be wrong in thinking its the top coat of laquar actually releasing from the paintwork below that is causing what you call blistering ?

I currently have an ongoing paintwork warranty claim, might help if I upload some pictures later but, I'm currently keeping quiet till unleashing all hell and all its demons on the dealership concerned, slow progress isn't a description I'll be using to SUK when we finally get somewhere near a settlement.

Think its base coat too, looks like its lifting from the plastic. Almost identical to a rust blister on a car from the 70's :)

A break in the paint / lacquer will allow H20 behind, and obviously plastic will not rust, but can blister.

It is really just a case of needing to repair paint damage ASAP, or as soon as you find the damage.

There is an obvious stone chip in the picture and any stone chip is SUK's get out of jail card, so I wouldn't even bother trying a warranty claim. I would just have a body shop remove the part, strip and prime, paint and lacquer.

That shouldn't happen even with a stone chip but as said SUK will use to throw out any claim....

There is a stone chip, no doubt about it. However, should the paint have lifted? I would like to think not. My bumper has quite a few chips in it, most of which i'm going to repair now before the paint washes off. Going to call dealer and see what they say. In the 17yrs of car owner ship, i've had it happen once before, on a citroen saxo. It was bought 2nd and a year old. Citroens response to the lacquer flaking was its was caused by a stone chip, but shouldn't have flaked. As a result they honoured the warrenty claim

Looks like someone has had a heat gun on it!

Yeah I'm kinda expecting something along those lines but, should SUK decide its an acceptable occurance and to be expected, then that'll be the acceptable and expected condition the dealers will receive it back at the end of the PCP term.  Whats good for the goose is good for the gander me thinks. The ex paint lab engineer that I am and as the part will have to be repainted, would do a cross hatch on the part not blistered put masking tape on the cross hatch and see what cones off. If it comes off to primer or base than there was contaminant on the part when painted, if not then just get it all repainted

Well, the top coat of laquar actually releasing from my car on the bonnet and two of the four doors is being dealt with this week, pretty ****poor considering I first took the car to the dealership about the paintwork on the 15th of March !

Is yours Pacific Blue?

Is yours Pacific Blue?

Yes, do you have problems too ?

Did. Had a lot of panels resprayed 'proffesionaly'.

Appears skoda have big issues with paint quality.

What's up with the doors?

The laquar towards the bottom of the Drivers and NSR door is coming off the paint below it and the paint seems undamaged hence, its being done under warranty but, I was in a no-lose position with the car being a PCP.

Had SUK said the paint had acted as it should have, I'd have said fine, thats the state you'll get it back at the end of the PCP, should I have had to drive it around for another 2 years looking like a POS it would have reflected worst on SUK than me.

Did you get yours resprayed under warranty ?

My main issue is the fact that this warranty claim has taken 14 weeks to resolve, Skoda built and shipped the whole car in less time.

Sounds bad hope you get it sorted and it doesn't rear it's ugly head again.

Mine was done under warranty as i noticed all the paint problems about 2 weeks after taking delivery. That was last September and finally got it all sorted this June.

Good luck.

I wont buy another skoda and indeed never a new car again after this fiasco.

I feel your pain, I feel exactly the same about Citroen, Peugeot and Fiat. All of them I have had truly Friday afternoon cars! On the other hand I've had 3 new Skoda's all with no issues (well that have not been covered under warranty with very little issue to me), in fact my Octavia was out of warranty and they even covered the labour cost plus some towards the parts (in other words I coughed up 10% of the bill).

I do hope my 4th Skoda will be equally as good, but these posts even make me concerned.

Paint is always an issue when it comes to warranty. My Peugeot had 5 resprays to solve the issue (each time it was worse or they damaged else where), in the end, I part exchanged it at 1 year old because I was sick of it.

Yes it's not an isolated skoda problem my colleagues audi q7 was rusting through and had paint issues that the dealer were inept in repairing correctly.

The problem is that to little checks are being made on these cars before they leave the forecourt. If such little care and attention has been made to the paint what else is equally poorly made/finished which the buyer cannot see?

More worrying if it's a family car and that brand is entrusted to provide some level of safety (quality).

I totally get your point of view, I'm sure I would feel the same. For me I feel equally as strong about the 3 I mentioned above, to me Citroën are death traps and unreliable sh**e!!

As for quality control, who is to blame? The dealer for not picking this up or the manufacture for letting it go through? And in the cost factor and % on error allowed and to be fair it's probably within acceptable levels (industry wise not personally for you or myself for example).

I truly feel your pain and distrus,t as I've been there myself, but try not let one experience put you off trying another brand or getting a new car again.

Biggest problem in this country is how hard it is to reject/refuse and get a new replacement of a new car bought, the USA is far easier and honestly something the motor industry here should be looking at taking on.......we seem to copy every other stupid American trend after all!

of course the above is just my view and 10pence worth!

I also think there is a culture problem of just accepting what is given.

Could well be right bud....how "very British" as they say.
