80-90'ish with little downforce road trim, loads of slip.. big cahoonas.. Full downforce 100-120 ish mahoosive cahoona's, f1 type setup..

Three people have pulled out, so the Civic is 1st reserve.

Just need one no show or problem in qualifying and we'll have a full compliment in the race.  

Means the Civic gets to do the full 30min qualifying to set a time and then wait and see for the race.

Great days racing at Brands Hatch today, well done to Brisky Racing and all who assisted and added to the close action on track. I'll leave it to Richard to do an depth Brisky Racing report.

Brilliant day assisting the guys with the racing. All of them came off with massive smiles on their faces, despite the initial red flag and having to wait on the track for 10 minutes or so for the restart.

Race Report.

Saturday 4th June at Brands Hatch.

CSCC Tin Tops and Swinging 60s.

 

My view, as it was a busy day and couldn't keep tabs of everything going on.

 

Qualifying.

Went out in the Fiesta, aiming for top three.  Put in the required 3 laps to qualify for the grid and then just went for it.  Went into P1 pretty much straight away, but there was traffic so I kept pressing on.

At one point Danny and myself were together pushing past other cars and went P1 and P2 on the timings apparently.

 

 

Thirty minute session and just before half way the pit board came out saying it was time to come in.  I saw clear track ahead so ignored it and hammered in one quick lap before coming in.  That last lap put me a thousandth under 54.4 seconds, my best yet.

We were a reasonable way in front with that, so chose to wait in the pits rather than hammer the car around in the traffic.  Thirty Three cars on the Brands Indy circuit means it tends to be rather busy.

As expected the times started to fall a little, which they did with people getting into the swing and going faster.  But with the end of the session in sight and P1 still held by 0.33 seconds I decided not to go out again. P1 secured for the race.

 

 

Jumped out of the Fiesta in the pit lane, walked back to the assembly area and there was the Elan ready to go.

Was hoping to get top five and put on a good show.

Planned to do a short stint so Paul (my second driver who has been racing in CSCC for quite a while) could get in the car as although very experienced he's not driven an Elan before.

Did about 7 or 8 laps and came in to swap over so Paul could have 20 minutes in the car.  He put in a good time, going a little quicker than me and we were 2nd on the grid.

So there we were among the V8s at the front.

 

Had a fair bit of downtime then, so spoke to a few people from work and Briskoda who it's always nice to see taking an interest, had lunch and got ready to do two races back to back by taking on plenty of fluid.

 

 

Tin Tops started a bit early at around 3pm and the rolling start went well, I held the lead through the first few corners and then the red flags came out due to an incident at Paddock Hill (1st corner) after the start behind me.

An Integra overtook me after the first red flag, scraping my wing and ripping the indicator off which didn't impress me that much although I guess he didn't see the first red flag.

We then sat on the grid for about half an hour after being put pack in qualifying positions while they sorted out the carnage at Paddock Hill.  Then the restart for a reduced 20 minute race with a pit stop any time you like rather than between 10 and 25 minutes of the usual 40.

I got off well again and put in some decent laps, not having to defend and holding the lead until lap 13 when I pitted at over half race distance with a bit of space behind me.  Made a silly error in the pitstop which cost me around 6 to 8 seconds, but it was completely my fault rushing to get the car started too early.

Blasted out of the pits to find the yellow Peugeot that had been in second right up my chuff.  Car didn't feel quite right, then I got passed.  Followed closely and took the place back into Druids when the Peugeot outbraked himself but was certainly not running 100%.

Down the next main straight I could only rev to 7500 instead of 8000 and it seemed to have started raining.  There was 4 or 5 laps to go at this point.  The Peugeot started to gain on me and made a move in Clearways which I defended but we had a little nudge and this sent me sideways onto the gravel with me barely keeping a wheel on a bit of firm ground.

Strong smell of petrol and realised it wasn't raining after all, the steaks on the windscreen were petrol.  Maximum RPM dropped to 7000, then 6500 and I started to fall back.

On the last lap I could only get 6000 RPM and that was it, so nursed the Fiesta home for 4th overall and 1st in Class ahead of Kester on 5th.

 

 

 

Stopped in the pits, jogged up to the Elan to go again and with the Tin Tops incident they weren't hanging around.  4 or 5 minutes and I was pulling away to form up for the rolling start.

Feeling a bit knackered but ready to go!

 

 

As expected the V8s were quicker off the line, but I held 2nd.  Then I got pushed off a bit at Druids by the Camero before diving back down the inside at Graham Hill and retaking 2nd.

We knew the V8s were going to be very quick until they started to wear themselves out a bit as bigger and heavier so I just tried to hold on.  Next time down the main straight I was on full throttle and the Camero came past me like I was out for a Sunday drive!

Had a spin in Paddock but held it on the track.  Safety car and I was in 10th.  Pushed my way back to 3rd over the next few laps and held that position.  As soon as the pit window opened at 10 minutes I came in to a rest, leaving the second stint to Paul who had also been in the Tops race but at least had time for a rest and to drink something.

 

 

Paul had a spin too through Surtees, but held it well and started to put in some great consistent times, slowly closing the gap to the V8 TVR at the front.  Then standing in the pit lane I saw them stop and they took a bit longer than expected.

With about 10 laps to go Paul was catching at around 0.8 seconds per lap in the Elan and was 7 or 8 seconds behind so it was looking like we might have a chance.  Sure enough the big V8s started to slow a little and about 3 laps before the end the Elan overtook and was now running at the front.  A nice win for the car in it's second race.

It was a great day all round TBH. Sad about the Fiesta not being able to be 100% for all of the race but it finished which was a HUGE step forward after so much bad luck.

 

We heard about your spin in the Elan when we were walking back around as the commentator was discussing you driving in the Tin Tops with a good show and pole, then with the Elan. Sounded like it was going to be cut and thrust with that V8 up till then with you having the better handling into and out of the corners.

 

I will always try to help out wherever you guys need it, it is always a pleasure getting out there amongst all the cars.

 

I wish Dan's pit stop had gone a little better as one of the harness clips I had put in dropped out whilst I was wrestling with another but live and learn and will do better next time. The marshall over viewing us gave Dan the thumbs up to get out and he did that succinctly so overall could've been worse. Shame he didn't finish but with a decent spanner check and a few other little glitches corrected it'll be good for the next race!

Will be a while.

Their next weekend is Spa and we can't do that as not National A license race holders.

Then Anglesey, which to be honest is too much of a hassle for the cost and amount of race time with overnight stops and 5+ hours each way.

 

So currently, the most likely next races will be at Thruxton in August.

Being a Northerner I will be at Anglesey though [emoji106]

A small drama in the morning with the civic's passenger door not opening from the outside resulted in a bit of a rush to get it through scrutineering. I struggled to reach the pedals so looked like a dwarf driving across the paddock. Only to find the seat can be moved forwards! D'oh.

Skippy did well for his debut race. Especially as he'd never seen the civic until that morning

Conga rat shoe laces one and all, but particularly Richard and Paul.

 

Now awaiting Autosport!

Bit of a disappointing race for myself. I was sitting around 8th in qualifying for a few laps, but ran wide a few times and lost my fastest laps which put me back to 12th on the grid.

I had a bit of a moment in qualifying... Paddock Hill and cold tyres...

After the restart from the first corner collision, the guys and lady in the pit pulled me in straight away. Exactly what I wanted to do but I couldn't communicate with the pit crew while we was waiting on the grid. Luckily enough Hannah has mind reading skills and showed me the "pit" on the first lap.

We had one of the slowest pit stops of the day with a balls up of doing the harness up when I got back in the car. Back out on track in 21st position, now the racing starts.

Eventually made my way up to 12th position with other cars choosing to pit and some overtakes.

But it all ended with a bad decision from myself. I choose not to bleed the brakes after qualifying which resulted in the pedal going to the floor, I had a split second decision to make, attempt to take the corner and risk colliding with Richard or pump the brakes and go for the gravel. As soon as the pedal hit the floor I knew it was game over. Luckily enough for me the car stopped in the gravel about a foot off of the tyre wall. First thought was go for reverse but I knew it was buried deep.

Yeah it sucks but I'm still learning. Only my third race but I'm up there in the top 10 mixing it with the big boys that's been doing this for years.

This one is a bit special to me. 20 years of being best mates with Skippy, growing up playing playstation and talking about "racing when we're older" and here we are. Our first race together.
