250-300 bhp for 5k or under. whats best?

Featured Replies

Im thinkin of passing on the vrs octy to the other half as a family wagon and gettin somethin fast, uneconomical and fun. Whats best under 5k? I would love a modified vrs petrol but was thinkin am i better getting somethin which is a bit faster and handles better out the tin and then tinkering with that? A modified mk1 octy would be perfect for the street sleeper style i like but then i think would my money be better off spend on an old s3 audi etc? What do you guys think?

  • An old school audi s4, easily 300bhp with a simple map, will make over 500 horse with twin ko4 upgrades.

  • If you really want to **** yourself go get your bike license.   1000hp/T for ~£5k   http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201505063233152 http://www.visordown.com/reviews/motorcycles/spor

  • Agreed.  I had an RSVR Edwards Rep Aprilia until a few months back and sold it after having litre superbikes for 15 years.  Got fed up with bad roads, the amount of traffic and couldn't get on as many

A Honda Civic Type R or a Clio RS.

Not 250-300 BHP but they do not need to be, they can break the NSL's, go around corners well and lose you your licence easily enough.

Hmmm.  Does it have to be a daily driver and therefore reliable?  I immediately thought of something Japanese such as a Subaru or Evo.  There's loads out there that are modified, quick and cheap.  Problem is though that there'll be a large amount of rubbish to wade through.

Another thought is, do you need more than two seats if the Mrs has the sensible family car?  If not then there's even more choice.

It will be a daily drive and i would like it practical if its needed. Eg running kids school whilst other half is out shoppin. But it wont be used that much.

Here you are.  Two Subarus and two Evos.  Total money pits (probably) and very antisocial.  However, they would be quick and put a smile on your face.

I know the white Subaru is only just over the 200hp mark but the others have plenty of poke.  I'm also aware they are chavvy but to be honest, I drive a VXR every day so I fall very firmly into that category myself.

Surely it's just your Mk2 Octy but in petrol format Mike?

Stg1 map takes you to justunder your target bhp, big turbo conversion and you have over300bhp and sleeper if debadged etc and keep the outside stock.

I've no suggestions, but going by your criteria for 300bhp, i'd want RWD or 4WD.

I'd not considered the old Audis.  Good choice.

Nissan 350z perhaps?

You'll get something reasonable for your budget.

Whatever you go for get ir Rolling Roaded before you buy.

It is amazing just how bad ie loss of hp some of these vehicles can be.

Working on a rolling we would see only about half the horsepower that the original manufacturer quoted.

I have had a little zing with an S5 that was a few years old in the Fabia VRS and the S5 was very amazingly lack lustre both in the engine dept and thne breaking for 3 figures in to a roundabout all over the place as clearly the brakes and shocks were all over the place.  Similarly thing a Over Finch, should have been awesome but was actually quite sad.  Suggest a full RAC or the like and RR.

Yep thumbs up for a Audi

Octavia 1.8T 4x4 with a bigger turbo.

Audi RS4 avant :)

2000 W plate in red.

That'll do nicely.

Maybe not £5 grand but one can hope!

Have we now got to a £4,000 purchase, a £1,000 just incase fund, and a friend that can for free or mates rates. ?

What about a Toyota Celica GT4? Quick in standard form, easily tunable, solid engines, 4 wheel drive and also they are not so common which earns you kudos.

E39 540i, Volvo V70r, lots of fun things out there :)

Old Volvo 850 T5 (250hp I think)

Jag XJS 4.0 V8 supercharged. Think most of them are around 400hp.

Oh and breakdown cover

I would be tempted to get something little and french,

Something with 250 - 300bhp, you arn't going to be able to stretch its legs very often,

Something like a clio 172 you can bang it down back roads everyday at less than licence loosing speeds and still have fun doing it,

You could always supercharge it if you get bored

Got a few options for you.........some more leftfield than others!
The main reason for picking these is that unlike their v-tec counterparts (or well known jap cars, subaru, evo etc) they usually havent been thrashed within an inch of their lives. If your limit was 230-300bhp there were quite a few more models you could have to choose from, including a hyundai :peek:

Thats all the cars half your budget, so you can buy two of those if you can't decide! :D

Now for the 4-5k options......

OK, maybe I lied, one more... BMW 745 http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201501290539952/sort/default/price-from/2000/radius/1500/postcode/cb80dt/onesearchad/used%2Cnearlynew%2Cnew/zero-to-60/fast/page/46/price-to/5000/usedcars/channel/cars?logcode=p

Now onto business..

Pretty much the same cars as above albeit newer or higher spec. Did find a couple though..

First off, one of my favourite cars.....yes its a jap import style car, but its quite a rare find. 4wd, 4ws, active areo and twin turbos! http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201505143456537/sort/default/radius/1500/page/105/price-from/4000/usedcars/onesearchad/used%2Cnearlynew%2Cnew/zero-to-60/fast/postcode/cb80dt/price-to/5000/channel/cars?logcode=p

Hope you enjoy looking through those. I just spent an hour trawling 3,000 car ads to find them...........It's a good thing I have no money, I've got a car shopping addiction. :D

Late mk1 Leon Cupra R with a 'cheeky' map must be knocking on the door of 250. Highly rated car in their day.

Some good ones there robt100

Just waiting for a 8am mot being done on a 12 year old Volvo S60 T5 just like in a autoloader link about. Solid car, nippy, drives better than many newer or even new cars, nothing much betters them for the leather or comfort, bup because my one is the year it is, £290 VED, if 6 month new with the same angine it would be £490. So you maybe need to consider annual costs, tax, insurance and consumables, parts, and cars without complicated electrics.
