X308 4ltr Jag, that's £1100 keep the rest for fuel bills and breakdown cover, great fun though

  • An old school audi s4, easily 300bhp with a simple map, will make over 500 horse with twin ko4 upgrades.

  • If you really want to **** yourself go get your bike license.   1000hp/T for ~£5k   http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201505063233152 http://www.visordown.com/reviews/motorcycles/spor

  • Agreed.  I had an RSVR Edwards Rep Aprilia until a few months back and sold it after having litre superbikes for 15 years.  Got fed up with bad roads, the amount of traffic and couldn't get on as many

As Volvo has been mentioned, how about the actual most comfortable car on the planet? The Saab 9-5 Aero Hot. Bit heavy, bit thirsty, but very good at it's job.

I've always liked those and was amazed at how much car you got for the money.

Old Volvo 850 T5 (250hp I think)

Jag XJS 4.0 V8 supercharged. Think most of them are around 400hp.

Oh and breakdown cover

I borrowed a XJS v8 a few years back, circa 2002/4 I forget exactly when.

I was excited and it was lovely down the M6, got on the A5 and I was longing for my Primera GT. It didn't handle well at all, of course it's not meant to. But bear that in mind.

My money would be on old power, so big NA engines, less extras the better. I do have a bit of a thing for a z3 coupe but they are still north of 10k on 100k cars.  Something old, odd and with good handling. Power would be secondary.

What about a holden? aka vauxhalls monaro?

But as said above, small and ringable is also going to make you potentially smile. As much as I don't like my citigo, on a quiet B road in Scotland, or A it's lovely. I'd really like a classic handling car of a similar size too, the 106 rallye, 205gti etc... Actually the PrimeraGT was a lot of fun too, handled very well I thought, for a 4 door.

If it was my money id put it on a Mazda 6 MPS. Awd and 260bhp. A very underrated car imo and tweakble.

lol-lol that revived the thread in post #43 is after a car with an autobox.

Wasn't there a mazda for sale on here a MPV version with that very same engine, love the idea of having something like that.

Back on post what about a Legnum VR4 estate or a stagea?

So would I. the early CX7s were the 2.3T from the before Mazda realised it was commercial suicide and swapped it for a tractor engine only. Shame the 7 isn't auto.

Another one I like is the early (better looking) Nissan Murano with the detuned 350z engine. I'd be happy with a v6 cayenne or Toureg too.

I have a soft spot for these too.  Back in a previous life I worked as a salesman for Nissan and they were brilliant cars.  Only 150bhp but they handled really well.  I had a 200sx S14 a few years back and that had the same engine but with a turbo and that was a cracking car too.

I looked at these before I got the VXR but unfortunately the boot wasn't up to much and we often use a hatch for shifting things.  I keep looking every now and then as the prices have come down quite a bit as people get put off by the VED.  Suits me as the tax thing is only a small part of the running costs for the year, plus they are so much cheaper to buy so it's a good time to buy such a car I reckon.

150hp was a lot in a 'normal' car once upon a time. Mate of mine had a Cavalier SRI with similar power and we all thought it was fast.

Cars were lighter too.

I am thinking of something that is sub £5K, V6 or V8, probably naturally aspirated so less blow up worries, something with a bit of class.

These sorts of filters keep coming up with Jags of various models,  I liked the look of the ex-police V6 Superb that I think is classy but many perhaps would not, personally I like the RX8 but many do not (it was in a X-Men film after all).  Volvo, maybe a C70 T5 but still a bit boxy.

I was thinking more like,  S80 4.4 V8 310hp AWD Geartronic. Available under £5,000.  (ved £505)

RX8 isn't a V6 or V8

Nice to see a bit of primera love in the thread :D

Looking on Gumtree I saw a 2.8 or 2.9L V6 golf estate for a grand!

Not sure on the BHP though.

Edit only 180 bhp it seems.

RX8 isn't a V6 or V8

A twin rotary Dr Felix W****l has the smoothness of a 12 cylinder reciprocating engine ie it is even better than a V6 or a V8 !!

& VW designed an engine to have the same output as the Golf V5 engine but with better economy and have the CC. the 1.4 TSI Twincharger.

Some of my mates still think their 150bhp cars are fast as anythin.

Tbf. I used to think when i was younger, that my dads old 150bhp (or around that) cars were quick. But then its gone up and up, and its sad how im not impressed by much that isnt silly fast anymore :(

Sadly even here in Europe, and especially in the US, it is buy cost that is key and buying a V5 was cheaper than a turbo or twin-charge plus less worry when out of warranty.

Most turbo cars, if they have a major engine failure, will cost £2-4k to fix and hence less worry buying a big V6/V 8 which can clock 150-200K miles no problem where plenty of high stressed 4 cylinder petrol turbo feel knackered over 110-120k miles.  Mind you my twin charge still felt good at 100k miles but it had mainly done motorway miles and it is short journeys that kill engines.

I know how smooth they are, but better than a V6 or V8? nah

The rotary engine is not only as smooth as a V12 but has a number of other advantages, as well as some disadvantages.

V6, 8, 12 are compact than in-lines but rotary even more so.

Rotary engines are not so rev limited as reciprocating engines, they hardly ever seize.

The combustion chamber shape is not quite so efficient but tubo'ing helps that.

Just a shame it has not received the same sort of development as piston engines.

I worked with the Norton twin rotary road and race bike, which won the Isle of Man one year with Steve Hislop. The racing RX7 were also fab.

Here is a (1.3 litre) rotary producing some off the charts hp.

Honda civic type r are not as bomb proof as you are led to believe , guy at work went through 2 under 30,000 miles full history engines let go. Year 2009 now has mini cooper.

Simple reason on that, owner, £20 says he wasn't a religious oil watcher.

Civic type R is as bomb proof as they say.  The only way you can kill them is Low oil and over revving on the downshift.

They also tune very easily.  £5k would allow you to buy a car tune it to 250bhp and set the handling up.  Despite only being 250bhp they will keep with most things as its proper NA BHP.

Then if you want 400bhp bolt a turbo on ( not my thing i'm afraid) but there are hundreds of turbo's type R's now with silly power.   I'll never get rid of mine, just such a good car that feels special overtime you go out in it.

link is massively irrelevant to the topic at hand though, may as well bring up the output of a top fuel drag V8...I like them and a 190 RX8 is way smooth but it's not especially torquey or revvy - better off with a V6 or a VTEC, I reckon.

Point taken, just like to remind people there is not just a option on the number of cylinders but having cylinders at all.

The RX8 is a nice cheap to buy option and although the more powerful version with 230 hp is fairly quick ie 0-60 in 6.5 seconds and so first the bill so something fairly quick for small money but sadly does it with poorish fuel consumption and oil usage.  They should rev well (rotor and rotor shaft rotate a different revs I recall).  Autos are very rare.

Friend had a Honda Legend which was quite nice but have not seen one for sale for years.  Mazda did some V6s I recall but not so powerful I think.   Setting the filters in Autotrader webpage and Jags mainly, some Volvos etc.

250 hp (when new) in a two tonne (old) car is not always sparkling I find.

There are a few Honda Legend V6 around for sale, older and newer if you fancy one.

There is a nice newer one , but a bit of a high asking price near me.

2008 3.5 V6 AWD Auto 291bhp.

Strangely one of the cars I remember from my childhood was a Honda legend coupe, I just remember I helped to MOT it whilst on work experience and just remember it being a really pleasant place to be
