best oil for your Octy

Featured Replies

I'm guessing that as most octy iii are still in warranty most still get dealer setviced andhave the OEM choice/promoted castrol edge fst oil.  However it's not the only vw504/507 00 spec oil and I was just reading stuff in the fabia I forum where some others prefer other oils, Mobil esp for example as the cars run cooler.

Does anybody here have any preference for oil brand?

Like you say, all are under warranty at present but once that expires, I would probably run with the OEM oil.

Snake Oil?

If oils are to the same VW spec and are fully synthetic 5w30 I would be very surprised if one oil made the car run cooler than another that would actually be noticeable.

Then again, Mk1 Fabias are a very different generation of engine to the current ones. In fact, the only Mk1 Fabia I have driven (was it a 1.5 Diesel?) must have had an engine from a tractor in it judging by the lack of power and the noise ........

Not snake oil in a MK2 Fabia vRS 1.4 Twincharger 180ps Minimum. (Petrol engines)

There are various Oils in both 5w 30 VW 504 00 Long Life & VW 502 00 5w 40 Full Synthetic that will have the engine running cooler

than Castrol Edge / Quantum Long Life lll.

Maybe Castrol / Quantum is the Skoda OEM & Recommended oil, it has a premium price, but that does not make it a premium oil.

Easy enough to prove, you try using them, and you check the indicated oil temps.

Whatever the dealer puts in when it gets its free service

Try Castor oil, it'll go like  :x  ;)

Understandable on the Mk2 Fabia vRS as that engine is running at the very limits. But are you doing these tests in lab conditions with exactly the same loads and air temperatures etc on each run?

What kind of temp difference do you get between the best and OEM?

But is there an engine in the Fabia I or O3 range that is running a similar power to capacity ratio as the Mk2 Fabia vRS that would actually benefit from lower oil temperatures? I am not aware that oil temps are an issue on the O3 for daily driving. If you are running on a track then that is a different story, but the second you take it on a track you have invalidated your warranty anyway.

I'd like to see the evidence for a Mk1 Fabia running cooler engine temps when running Mobil 1. Have you got a link to the thread. If we're talking Mk1 Fabia vRS here, I never noticed a different running a variety of oil brands over the 3 I owned. All meeting VAG spec of course.

If I was choosing my own oil for a Mk3, I'd check Opie Oils (site sponsor) as they have a very good search facility, and go for a known brand meeting the required VAG oil specification.

Just running the cars daily, weekly, monthly and sportingly, and doing the Oil & Filter changes and running apps.

Covering 10's of thousands of miles with them.

The Benefit of Oil Temperatures not going high quickly and then getting back down quickly being less energy is used cooling,

less heat soak, and better engine protection.

Day to day UK NSL's,.  maybe not worth bothering,  but then better Oil than Castrol Edge / Quantum need not be more expensive,

and the fuel economy can improve.

It is basic and simple stuff really,  just like over priced Castrol can be.

PS

You do not Invalidate the Manufacturers Warranty the minute you take it on Track in Non Competitive Events,

ie Non Timed.

Read T&C's on the Warranty.

Sorry, fabia ii forum. Read it here http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/355775-servicing-my-vrs/

I could believe there are differences between oils but surprised if differences are as large as some claims.  Whether it matters.... Often not, but might sometimes.

Fabia II is a different story as Skoda released a car with nearly 130PS per litre - equivalent of a 260PS 2.0 petrol - so a pretty highly tuned engine for a road car.

goneoffSKi - interested to hear what type of temperature differences you can get - having built some highly tuned BL A series engines for Minis in my youth I am well aware of the problems with heat soak and oil temps etc.

As for the warranty, Skoda exclude the use for motorsports activities. That is so loosely defined that I wouldn't like to be in the position of trying to justify a claim if they have refused it.

Seems very logical that good oil is more and more important as engine tune increases.  Perhaps anyone that remaps a vrs could let us know what oil temps you experience

OK, as said by others about the Mk2 Fabia vRS - I would not use this as the benchmark for oil choices on other vehicles. Given it's 'highly strung' nature it's a completely different animal....
