vRS - performance improve with age?

Featured Replies

Hi, covered 1400miles in my vRS now and I was just wondering, will the performance of the car improve as the engine wears in? (say around 5000-10000 miles)

Only reason i ask is it doesn't seem quite as quick as I remembered the test car being. It's pretty pully from say 1800rpm upto 3000rpm but there's really nothing after that. I know diesels run out of puff early in the rev range but it just feel a little bit lack luster at the higher end.

Also is it worth fitting a replacement panel filter (like the green cotton one) if i don't fit the cupra air intake? will this help it rev a bit free-er or do I have to fit the cupra intake to see ANY difference?

Cheers

Steve

Cupra Intake and Green Panel filter should help free up the revv range a little but I wouldnt expect it to make much of difference (more of a placebo effect). The real difference is when you get it remapped as Mike from Jabba confirmed on mine that it would of been 8-10 bhp lower on the final power if it didn't have the panel filter/intake.

The reasoning, more air & can hold the boost higher and for longer.

yeah I don't wanna re-map it as it's only a month old and don't wanna screw the warranty.

I posted the same about a month ago, the test 04 car was ALOT quicker than my 05 the general opinion was that it improves with age

Have to say with now 7k done it feels no faster at all so will wait and see.

The engine will loosen up and get slightly quicker with age but the change will be slow and continuous so you wont notice it at all (unless you get back in a new one again)

cupra air intake mate! i had the same prob, 30 quid spent and it felt much better. go buy one now!!

im upto 30,000 and it feels quicker also ran ultimate deisel most those miles

also I regularly rant the **** out the little engine which is so I'm told good for a deisel once there warmed up

i think its good to cane any car every now and again to get everythin movin and to blow the cobwebs away.

Mine did open up after 10k miles, had mine remapped at 5k and at first couldnt notice "much" difference, a little bit more progressive that's it.

Then as the mileage increased over 10k and in particular 15k the car now feels VERY quick indeed and is noticably faster above 3k rpm.

The power delivery doesnt feel as smooth anymore but it is certainly very agressive and delivers exactly what YOU WANT, a good PUNCH.

I still don't think a green filter/intake makes much difference prior to a remap however I didn't get a chance to notice the full gain as stated I had mine mapped at 5k miles so i'm probably not the best person to ask.

BTW, there are numerous remaps which can be turned off come warranty/service time so that your dealer will never notice.

I had the same feeling when I got to 5k. Never looked back since the re map. Pulls like a train to the rev limiter now. On 16k, and it just keeps getting stronger and stronger.

I noticed big performance and economy improvements around 6k - I drive other cars pretty often so I have a comparison point.

I regularly drive it really hard and it's a good bit quicker than the old fella's 54 plater as a result (on similar mileages).

You soon get used to the power and after a while it feels normal no matter how much more power you get,the best thing is go drive another car preferably not a diesel then go back to yours and it will feel quick again. After a PD engine most petrol engines feel very week even so called fastish ones.I turn my revo off for a few days then back on to get the same effect

Mine's done 6,000 now. Some days i think it's not as fastas it used to be (but still very quick). Other days's it suprises me when i put the accelerator down. Just seems to have good days and VERY good days!

Can someone show me what a cupra intake looks like and what the standard intake looks like?

What's people's views/experiences with the warranty and the cupra air intake mod?

I don't mind just fitting the replacement filter cos i can replace that should it need work but the air intake isn't as easy to swap.

It will invalidate your warranty as it is not a standard Skoda part. Whether anyone servicing your car would spot it though is another matter. Just don't go bragging about it ;)

I will leave it for a year or so then.

Is it worth putting the filter in with the standard air intake? or not.

Yes I can.

It does get better with age/mileage. Mine is far more rev-er than before it will now rev all the way upto 5k which is nice! It now has 30k on the clock*

I'm a mechanical f**ktard, and it took me 10 mins to change the intake and filter. I can't guarentee no one will notice, but it isn't at all noticable, apart from the bright green/orange filter element.

I just didn't fancy having to replace it on the road side like i did with my ZS when my head gasket blew in magnificent style. Having to swap the induction kit for the orriginal ait box was not fun with limited tools lol

perhaps i'll buy the filter, if i can't tell any difference then i'll think about getting the intake changed.

is the green cotton one the best, or should i go K&N, pipercross?

Up to you, they are pretty much of a muchness, green cotton seems popular, but so do k&n. I don't think any significant gain is to be had with just a filter element though.

No i didn't expect there would be, just wasn't sure as to what was the most restrictive element the intake or the paper filter.

Yes I can.
