Where to buy PlusGas?

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

As mentioned in the mk1 forum I'm after getting hold of some PlusGas. I'd rather get it today so don't want to order online but as far as I can tell, the only place in Huddersfield that stocks it is Euro, with whom I've had some really bad customer service experiences so I'm reluctant to go back... it's also an absolute trek on foot.

Anyone know where else in Huddersfield I can get some PlusGas?

Cheers

Do you have a local ironmonger? (real ironmonger, not a "DIY 'super'store")

What about Amazon? http://www.amazon.co.uk/English-Abrasives-802-10-Plusgas-Aerosol/dp/B0001P02RK

Although it is cheaper in Euro Car Parts unfortunately it's not as widely stocked as some of the others but it does have a very good rep.

Alternatively I have read that a 50/50 mix of ATF fluid and Acetone is supposed to be an excellent penetrating fluid but I've not tried that myself.

Cheers guys. Someone else has found dealer about ten minutes' walk from my house that should stock it - but I appreciate the suggestions nonetheless!

Would this stuff be any good on bleed nipples on calipers. I'm thinking I might have to do my front brakes soon and I'm staring to doubt the dealer did the brake bleed last year at its service going by the carry on I had with the rear caliper.

Yes :)

As above but the trick is to let it soak overnight or for a period of time so that It can soak into the thread and dissolve the rust. Bleed nipple can be tricky though because of the size of them don't be afraid to give the surrounding area a whack with a hammer, preferably a copper one if you have it.

I was thinking, start to put some on a week or two before and add some every other day. Thanks for the tip on the copper hammer.

Another tip especially if you are doing the bleed nipples is to get some heat into the brakes before hand, so basically go for a drive using the brakes hard then immediately after spray the nipple with plus gas. That will cause the nipple to expand and contract thus braking the rust seal.

Every little helps.

My "normal technique" with PG is to spray it, then go for a coffee.

Cheers guys. Can't seem to find it over the counter anywhere other than Euro which is a pain for me to get to anyway... anyone know where I can get it online with next day delivery and not have to pay like £7 for the privilege?

Did you phone Wilco? They usually stock it.

Not yet, but from where I live the Wilco is also quite awkward to get to. If my housemate's in a good mood on Monday I'll get him to drive me down!

Phoned Wilco but they want £7 for the smallest tin so that's not happening. Even Euro don't have it in stock.

Anyone know if any of the new WD-40 variants are any good or shall I just stick with the normal stuff?

It's up to you, but the whole reason for recommending PlusGas in my case is that I got a bolt loose in 15 minutes with it, after completely failing in 3 hours with WD40. Before you suggest it was "loosened" by the 3 hours, we're talking "big guy couldn't move it" to "finger tight after I broke the lock".

From what i remember , Plusgas, was a mix of paraffin and grease ( possibly graphite ). Paraffin hit rust  etc, and grease lubricated and stopped any nasties from things paraffin did.  might be worth a look .
