First off this month has been horrid and I'm totally fed up with life...it should therefore come as no surprise that my telly packed up today

So that's my Pc's, laptop, car, monitor, dvd writer, digi box and finally my telly.

So goodbye jvc 28"...what to replace her with, any tip top tips..hdtv I guess is a must going forward.

Off to the shops tomorrow for a scary day out.

How much do you want to spend?

Do you want CRT,LCD?

Need more info!

If you decide to get anything Sony, let me know, I may be able to sort you out a good price :)

Red Baron has his unfeasibly large one here on Ebay. Finishes tmrw morning.

Panasonic Viera plasma for a big screen, saw a HD demo on one the other day, stunning. Didn't look too bad on 'normal' PAL either, certainly blew away all the LCDs.

I've recently bought a Acer 32" LCD which I'm chuffed to bits with, was

Paul's is way to big...

I'd like plasma, but the old urban myths ned to be dispelled before I part with cash now and again in five years...gaming, gassing, burn etc...

Lcd, yes, 28" and above really ;)

CRT...would be nice to save some living room space by the new breed, although that carries a price penatly I guess.

1k tops ideally, but it can stretch for that extra special feel...

Sony is on the cards ;)

Have had a 42" plasma since christmas last year, wouldnt be without it now and large screens are essential to get the best of hdtv. LCD is no good for sport due to pixel response times. No burn in or other issues in nearly 12 months, they really are urban myths. I have calculated the life of my tv to be more than 20 years based on current viewing patterns.

I drive mine using a MCE2005 pc with dual freeview cards and around 500GB of disk space for music/photos/dvd and tv recording. I have the best of both worlds, PC gaming, Internet, and music/photos/tv/dvd in one box. I have a panasonic domestic dvd recorder, but dont use it now as I use the pc all the time to create dvd's. I usually run the pc at 1920x1080, but switch to 1024x768 for internet use to make the text clearer.

With a budget of 1k i'd stay safe and go for a really good Panasonic or Sony CRT. Philips aren't bad either. Any Plasma or LCD (above 28") in that price range is going to compromise on something and you'll be kicking yourself for it.

My Loewe 28" CRT is still going strong after almost 10 years and 4 house moves (is that the kiss of death - best bookmark this thread ;)), so I'd highly recommend them :D

Could be...I think mine has broken after I turned a friends 42" phillips plasma down.

But it was not hdtv etc...

We'll have to see...good point re the pixel rate, I'll pack a couple of dvd's I think.

Oh my jvc was 10 this year :(

Well there is that, but not hooked it up yet...afterall if I do, now will I be able to pull my hair out over AD and dns on the now up and running raid box :D

The dell (fp2405) is fine for games so I imagine it should be ok for films/sport etc...might give it a trial later...

projector and screen... is the way forwards... sub 1k for a decent elec screen and a decent projector is imho a better way forward than a 42" plasma......

I'd be inclined to agree with this.

A nice 28 or 32" CRT tv for everyday use and projector and retractable screen for when you want the real "home cinema" effect

Dells nice LCDs

I've yet to see a flat panel set (LCD or plasma) that has the same sort of picture quality as a mid priced CRT

What Hi-fi (They do AV stuff as well) seem to really rate the following:

LCD: Toshiba 32WL56, which you should be able to track down for

Projector is best if you dont mind drawing all the curtains and sitting in complete pitch black just to watch Eastenders ;)

In terms of plasmas; Panasonic Viera and Pioneer make the best and are all now HD ready (not that you will have anything to watch for a while!) I've got a Viera and whips the llamma's a$$ :D

Just for the record...

There are other models, but they're the non-HDTV ready ones so I haven't mentioned them. The ones above are the new Bravia range and look rather sexy  :D

youve clearly been watching some old projectors....:D

Projectors have come on a pace in the last few years, SWMBO keeps banging on about how good they are so they MUST be decent!

The only thing is the price of a decent one breaks the bank somewhat.

I still think a decent CRT is the best choice if cost is a deciding factor.

Agreed,

All the course material and video clips during last weeks training course in London were projected using an LCD projector mounted on the ceiling. Picture was perfect and very clear, and that was in normal daylight. Even with bright sunlight the picture was fine.
