Rubbish roads in Sheffield

Featured Replies

I thought I'd start this on here intead of my usual port of call, the Octavia section.

Does anyone else do a lot of driving round Sheffield, especially the University area - Broomhill, Eccleshall, Crookes, etc? I'm over there frequently, daughter now in 5th year at Uni. The hills I can take, the siting of pelican crossings with no pedestrian access is just daft, (I've seen at least two on the inner ring dual carriageway) but... but...  the road surfaces!!! Is it deliberate council policy these days to not resurface them? How much does it pay out for damaged suspensions?

The city has some great pubs, and we've never found the locals to be anything but friendly (I'm sure there are exceptions), lots of interesting buildings, but, THE ROADS!!! Are they the same in the other parts of the city?

My daughter lives in the Woodseats area of Sheffield and the roads there are also atrocious.  Some of the pot holes are even worse than those in Gloucestershire and that is saying something.

I have every sympathy with you fella...

The road at the end of our cul-de-sac, has just been voted worst road in Sheffield by the Sheffield Star!

Our Cul-de-sac is also horrendously pot holed :(

Whats made it worse is they have just tarmacced all the bl00dy paths round our way, and left the roads!!!

From memory they were not great 20-30 yrs ago either, so keeping up the tradition by the sounds of it. My bro went to uni there and then continued to live in the area for 10 yrs, so I was there on a fairly regular basis. I put up with things until the trams went in and after that refused to go near. Fortunately my bro moved so it was not an issue. :sun:

Yup. Swmbo goes to uni there.

The roads are diabolical.

Yep I live here so have it every day. Basically the council, over countless years, refused to spend money on the roads and maintenance so they are literally disintegrating. The have a PFI contract underway to try and fix them but they are currently way behind and doing the councils 'favoured areas' first rather than doing the bad ones first. So basically those in the labour areas or where the councillors live are done...

So the areas round the Universities, where the private landlords are earning around 9% gross on their student lets, can just whistle, because a high proportion of residents are students and don't count, regardless of the income they provide to local businesses, and the local native residents with decent properties paying high council tax suffer too. That's democracy in action. Come the revolution...

Yes....Horrendous!

My daughter is a Police Officer in S Yorks Police and lives in Crookes

I cant believe how bad they are!!

Shameful!

Come the revolution...?

I thought it'd been The Peoples Republic of Sheffield for years.

They are dire, I live here too...

But I tell you what...

The areas where they have resurfaced and lets say made lovely, with speed reduction bumps don't work. Frequently see folks faster than the limits.

Turn on to a 'traditional' road with holes, gaps, riffles and gravel, speed is mostly 20mph.

So actually maybe the council have inadvertently stumbled into the future of urban speed control, just let the roads go to hell, no one is going to drive on some of them at more than 20mph, unless it's stolen.

Now I'm part of the zero road fund club, I don't feel I can really push for better roads.... just don't let the lovely peak roads ( derbyshire council ) go the same way.

But i cant see it doing stopping distances any favours, and bouncing around corners isnt much fun either haha.

Got home from work to find a letter saying that they are starting resurface of our cul-de-sac on Monday

Properly? Or that gravel that never goes away on quiet roads?

Whatever it is, it's got to be better than it is now.

It's absolutely full of pot holes...

I'm sure it's in worse condition than after the Sheffield Blitz!

Further to ColinD's post above (Colin, I saw your local bike shop connection), 20 mph would be reckless on some of the roads round Crookes and Broomhill! I know my suspension would object.

And bilun777, thanks for spotting the political reference!

fabiamk2se, keep us informed.

There's a yellow box junction near the Record Collector shop on the Fulwood Road that's nearly disappeared due to the surface breaking up. Only about 10% of it still visible.

That's it from me, I'll leave any further citicism to the locals. Thanks for letting me know you're fed up with it too!

I believe that councils have a legal duty to repair potholes, within a certain time (28 days?) - once they have been reported.

You could try FillThatHole.org.uk., they say "Local councils have a duty to maintain the roads, but they can only fill a pothole if they know about it." - it can probably do no harm.

Last week, or the week before BBC Click had an item from jaguar landrover. They are, have, built a system that will log and report road, potholes, using accelerometers and other fancy electronics.

Quite clever and well worth a watch.

Bloody hell.

Theyll be the ones needing more RAM if they take that anywhere near sheffield, Colin haha.

The Sheffield PFI Streets Ahead have a reporting portal on the Sheffield city council website... I'm a regular user. ;-)

I live a little way out of Sheffield but work in Sheffield, the roads have degraded and awful lot over the years I've commuted in, I commute by bicycle/motorbike half of the time and its got to a point where most of the routes are to unsafe to ride down.

Oh wow! Thanks for all this info. We're going up to just west of Sheffield on hols at the end of next week. I'll approach with caution, on tip-wheel!

Liomer, shouldn't that be S10, not SP10? And you should be OK there, it's a little outside the war zone.
