Rubbish roads in Sheffield

Featured Replies

Liomer, shouldn't that be S10, not SP10? And you should be OK there, it's a little outside the war zone.

Yup, you're riht - S10 - but Google maps sends me right through Sheffield, so I assume Columbus will as well.

If you want a nice scenic route, I'd peel off at the A38 |> A615 and come up through Matlock A6, Rowsley B6012, Chatsworth, A623 then onto Froggatt A625. You can then cut up to Ringinglow road, Norfolk arms and you're not a long way from your destination and looking down over Sheffield. Same result can be had from Chesterfield 617->619

Takes a bit longer, 30mins more maybe, avoids most of the 50mph specs m1 works, but it's really nice scenery. I'd do it and do it that way if travelling around rush hours, so anytime after 3pm.

I'd come through Chesterfield to be honest - off the M1 at J29 A617 then Dronfield Bypass (A61) to Meadowhead.  HAng a left on the B6054 towards Bradway then drop down Twentywell Lane to Abbeydale Road South.  Right Left at the bottom of Twentywell and back up through Dore and Cross Lane to Hathersage Road (A625).  Straight over and up Long Line then right at the top to bring you out at Ringinglow opposite the Norfolk Arms.  Left and the right down Fulwood Lane and Andwell Lane to Mayfield Road in the Mayfield Valley.  There's only two or three houses on Mayfield Road so shouldn't be that hard to find where your going from there!

Thanks, fellas. We'll be taking the A1, and either going via Newmillerdam - to call in on a daughter - or directly to Mayfield Road. Either way we won't know which until about half-way there, and from the A1 Google says turn off on to M18/M1/A630/A57 round the top of Sheffield. We always use the A1 for Newmillerdam as it's a nicer road and has more stopping-off places to let the dog out for a stroll.

Liomer, if you do venture into the city, a few pointers from a very frequent visitor: The inner dual carriageway is a 40 mph limit in many places. At roundabouts there are often pelican crossings a car's length from the actual roundabout entrance, and these crossings are heavily biased time-wise in favour of the pedestrians. Getting on to roundabouts, disable the stop-start, because you'll need to step on it to make way around/across the roundabout. Point and squirt is the order of the day. Even though I'm now very familiar with the city, I always use my satnav, because if you miss a turning getting back on track can be very tricky. The western and southern part of the ring road is especially busy most times of the day. During the time you'll be in town, there'll be a LOT of traffic from parents picking up students. The west is student territory, the parents tend to stay in city centre hotels so they'll be pootling between town and the University area. They majority of them won't have a clue where they're going, so watch for people cutting across you.

Yes, I know inner city driving is the same all over the country, but I think Sheffield is quite different from other places I know - Cardiff, Manchester, Liverpool, Southampton, Bristol, in that although it is a big city, there's a lot of traffic concentrated in a fairly small area, with a higher proportion of strangers round there than in other parts of the city.

An as I mentioned in my first post, there a some great pubs, and if you're a beer drinker you'll think you've gone to heaven.

Rivelin Valley, I've got a conspiracy theory on that, some have been patched around rails road... a few days later a speed van was there. Seriously who will do more than 40 on Rivelin Valley road, even in the citigo I've had better wisdom tooth removal moments.

Ye old mustard pot, never been so yeah why not. Got a softspot for the old horns upper bradfield as I can walk to it in a few hours. Although they do charge 1.30 for a cordial water drink
