Best place to get a new / replacement turbo & how much to pay? I need one ASAP

Featured Replies

Hi all,

My turbo has failed on the way home from work tonight. It went from working to nothing & blowing out black smoke behind me when I went to put my foot down. Initially I thought I had a boost leak but as I slowed down in traffic I could hear the rumbling of bearings which suggests it's clucked.

I don't want a 2nd hand one as exactly the same thing could happen again and I don't want a hybrid or upgraded one - I simply want a new standard turbo as the car is used as a motorway mule and I do over 2,000 miles per month and I need the car back on the road ASAP, ideally this week.

The car / turbo has done 118,000 miles and has been faultless up until now.

I have had a quick search on the internet for prices but thought I would ask the wise & knowledgeable as to where is the best place to get a new turbo and what kind of price can I expect to pay for a new one with warranty?

I have found this place which seems reasonable:

http://www.aet-turbos.co.uk/shop/shop/skoda-fabia-vrs-1-9-d-130hp-asz-engine-garrett-gt1749v-720855-remanufactured-turbo/

Any other recommendations / help / advice would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Martin

Im looking also, but the link you provided doesnt state "new" and this line "we became the first British turbo re manufacturing company to be awarded the ISO 9001 accreditation" leads me to believe its re manufactured.

Good spot  , I was really just skimming the net and seen this and thought it was a good price but as with most things, if it's too good to be true then it probably is :wall:

If it's a good company refurbishing them then I wouldn't worry much.

It basically means the housing will be used, but you wouldn't know it by looking really as they are always shot blasted and cleaned up etc.

Aslong as the internals are new I'd be happy.

Euro car parts are doing remanufactured turbo's for just over £400 with a 12 months warranty which again seems okay. Anyone fitted one of these?

I've fitted them before at work, can't complain.

I'd consider xman from the forum, pretty sure you will get a better turbo for less, might be wrong though.

Try and find the reason why it failed first as well.

That aet site states its remanufactured. I have a aet hybrid and its awesome.

If you want new look at Darkside. But remember the prices stated arent including VAT.

Hutchy, the car is with a local decent garage who are going to examine the turbo in the morning before I part with any cash. Certainly don't want to starve a new turbo of oil.

Yes but he said he wants a standard pd130 turbo, im the same boat absolutely no point in a hybrid or anything else with a economy map of 160bhp.

also need copper nuts, oil feed, oil return pipes .. anything else?

Hutchy, is xman a trader on here or just someone who specialises in turbos?

He's a genuine trader on here. If you want standard he'll sort you out as well.

If you've got it remapped to 170'ish anyway, I'd put his pd170 hybrid on, cheap enough and stronger than standard. Fit it and forget about it.

I don't see the point in fitting a weaker turbo for more money... Just my thought anyway.

As for the copper nuts, he sells full fitting kits with all nuts and gaskets if you wanted them.

As for replacing the oil feed and return pipes...

If you looked at the return pipe in your hand you will see why this is pretty pointless if only doing as a precaution. It's about 20mm wide, it doesn't block.

The oil feed pipe is so simple to remove, clean and inspect.

Do you mean GT1749vb/vc  there out of stock i believe, but also they require VNT adjustment.

I was saying there's nothing wrong with remanufactured turbos if the conan is a good one. New inlet, exhaust, oil feed and return gaskets plus new egr gaskets

You recomended Darkside for a standard pd 130 turbo? @ £600+ delivery + vat :P

If you want hassle free get a new unit. If you go for a refurb then you will need to log group 11 to check the actuator is setup correctly. Incorrectly setup actuator can lead to overboost.

Where in North Wales are you out of interest?

If I was in your position I'd buy a Xman hybrid for £500 or thereabouts what he charges. There's plenty of guys on here that have done the actuator adjustment and I'm sure would help you out...

There's rucks of people happily running turbos from him. I agree with Hutchy to be honest... if you can upgrade for the same/similar price as a standard part then I would!

Well you can't have it all ways.

Do you want fit and forget or do you want upgrade and adjust?

You might as well get a second hand unit if you want fit and forget but for coppers

The link i posted above your comment ^

I don't have any vb/vc hybrids in stock at the moment but why not go for:

well worth the money and soooo much more fun ;) if set and tuned correctly it can produce 1.5bar at 2000 revs and holds 1.8bar pretty much to the red line...

oh nice, can you describe what the boost pipe connection is? what size, and is it held with just a t clamp?

I've fitted that exact turbo on one of my own Fabias, IMO it's the best upgrade without the hassle of a GTB turbo.

Standard oil feed and return etc all work fine, exhaust is a straight fit.

Only difference is the boost pipes which can easily be changed or as said the standard pipe can be fitted if you cut the metal ring off and push it on.
