Sump plug confusion!

Featured Replies

Just getting things together in preparation for an interim oil and filter change on my 1.2tsi, November 2014 model. I have obtained a new sump plug (N90813202 according to the invoice) from a Main Dealer, in case needed. However, I've noticed that this has a 19mm hex head, whereas the one currently on the car has a 18mm hex head. Obviously, I won't know if the thread size is the same until the original is out of the sump.

There is no packaging on the new plug as the parts man just picked it loose from the stores. Could I have been given the wrong item?

Any information/comments would be welcome if you good people know more about this subject.

The thread should be M14-1.5.

Are you sure the current sump plug head is 18mm?

It should be 19mm.

Some vehicles on there first sump plug from factory are indeed 18mm. Your replacement will be 19mm.

Why's that then? Is it to make sure you know if the 1st oil change has been done?

Get yerself a sump sucker...much easier. 5 minutes to empty the sump and change the filter.

19mm (3/4") hex bar stock is more common in manufacturing.

.......

5 mins for the filter!

Don't you have to take the tray off first?

Nope, it's on top of the engine.

Of course, I'd forgotten.....haven't had to do one yet......3yr fixed price warranty etc.

Beat me to it, been doing mine with a Pela for years!

Cue usual suck vs. drain discussion....
