Rob's Ur Quattro

Went out today to run some errands ($3.06 a litre for 98) and after a while I was getting the overboost issue again. Tightened the banjo bolt again on the wastegate and it improved a bit but I didn’t dare tighten it any more in case it became righty-loosey. It gradually got worse as I drove until I had no boost at all so I called at Lower Hutt Repco where the helpful staff and I found these sort-of-similar copper washers. Problem solved! Full boost is back.

Back on its wheels at last!

  • Wento for a quick trip to the petrol station. Got sidetracked. I am loving this car! It sounds like it's gargling on the fuel not just drinking it, what an awesome sound!

Rusty is in many pieces.
Turns out the rear main seal is just about the only one anywhere near the gearbox that’s not leaking!
Clutch looks okay for wear but is contaminated with gear oil.

Good opportunity to give the 'box a good bit o' spit n'polish though (Looking for a bright side).

More parts. These ones from Classic Quattros in the UK. Great service as always and really quick delivery.

Why have you a black toilet cistern fill valve?

Hi Rob, was that starting from the Featherston side? Abbotts creek is named for my great-grandfather. There used to be an old, single lane Bailey bridge over the creek.

Brand new old stock heater core!
A friend came across these in Christchurch and I thought it best to grab one while I could, as mine didn’t look great when I last saw it.

You know you've reached a certain age/point when you look on an internet page, for someone the other side of the planet, who's just got a BNOS heater core, and you think 'Oooooh 😎!'.

We are getting there!
Various fixes to wiring and one new sensor have got the car starting and running. Everything is back together. Lots of leaks fixed, lots or repairs done. The final hurdle to pass a Warrant of Fitness is a cracked gearbox mount which they are testing to see if it can be welded.

So far that I know of in this chunk of work: gearbox out, replace rear main seal, replace clutch slave, remake leaking clutch line, replace all gearbox input and output seals, replace leaking rear diff seals, repair wobbly gear linkage, replace gearbox output shaft bearing, new clutch friction disc and bearing, machine flywheel, rebuild pressure plate, wheel alignment, fix various wiring issues, new dizzy cap, remake main coil lead, check timing, troubleshoot and fix firing issue, remake leaking low pressure power steering line. Oh yeah and welding that mount.

Probably more stuff. I could have bought a nice reliable older Suzuki Swift for what the bill will be. :D
