Got a few minutes to do a couple of small jobs.

The easy to get to engine mount is done :)

And pulled the rusty radiator cowl off and slapped some paint on it :)

I reckon that rubber flap might be past it.

Back on its wheels at last!

  • Wento for a quick trip to the petrol station. Got sidetracked. I am loving this car! It sounds like it's gargling on the fuel not just drinking it, what an awesome sound!

Check out my rusty turbo. As expected of course. Not looking forward to the day I have to remove those nuts!

Driver side engine mount in place, with rusty nuts :D

It's a bit different to the one that was fitted but it fitted okay so I went with it :D

That looks a lot like a K&N filter. Have I found the first decent part fitted to my car? Needs a clean of course.

You cold give the turbo nuts some PlusGas now?

Sigh. Managed to drop the sealing washer from one of the banjo bolts on the fuel line. Of course it didn't come out of the bottom. Will have to take the airbox back out to look for it.

So instead of doing that I made a rubber flap thingy.

I failed to find a new washer at any local car shops, then I remembered the donor car, and found one on one of the bits. Got it all back together then looked over and noticed this gasket. I used all of the swears.

You're getting the Rob, keep it up mate.

Just keep thinking of the end game...you'll end up with a rare v interesting car that'll be worth decent money by the end of it.  The hard work will all be worthwhile.

Got some bits and pieces delivered including these exhaust hangers and brake caliper seal kits.

I sprayed a bit of degreaser around under the engine. Super Cheap's own brand, it's pretty good.

Front subframe with some paint slapped on and some nice new poly bushes and mounts attached.

All of the ABS sensors have lost most of their outer shielding. What's the best thing to re-wrap them? I'm optimistically assuming they work :D

With the plugs fitted l'd probably wrap them with loom tape them put a spiral cable wrap over the top because of the harsh environment.

Front wishbone bushes removed. It went well so I decided to do the rears as well. Yeah they're a bit rusted in.

Removed the drive shaft to clean it up and sort out the CV boots. This might explain why one wasn't attached - the part it's supposed to seal to isn't round!

Looking at shocks now, it seems the fronts are either 50mm or 55mm diameter. Will measure tonight and find out which I have. Bilstein B6 are the ones I'm, going for. I've asked a few NZ suppliers for pricing. I'd like to buy locally but not if there's the 50-300% "being in New Zealand" tax.

Both struts have 55mm outer diameter, so I've gone for it and ordered the Bilsteins. Found them from an NZ supplier for a reasonable amount.

Got some odds and sods from Classic Quattros in the UK:

The plastic air guide for the intercooler, which I'm missing. Pipes for the headlight washers, proper clips for the bumpers, a new trim for the passenger door, and some neoprene strips which should be between the two parts of each bumper.

Car loaded up to take some stuff to The Toy Shop Wellington tomorrow for some assistance with things like wheel bearings.
The timing of the shocks arriving was spot on!

Just caught up on this years updates B)

Epic restoration, but expected that after your Octy estate!

Really looking forward to more updates and the finished car :)

The Toy Shop Wellington are doing a great job on my struts, having to use some creative methods to get them apart after the wheel bearing refused to shift with 10 tonnes of pressure.
It appears I supplied two correct wheel bearings and two wrong ones. Doh. They're sorting some correct ones out for me.

Got the brake hard lines out from each corner. The front to back one is okay but the connections to the flexis were all rusted and rounded and I had to saw them off.

I've nearly got everything removed now, I need to start putting things back on!
Rear subframe still needs removing, need to buy bushes for it as I only ordered enough for one subframe for some reason!
I moved my jack stands and had to set them higher, then the car felt a bit wobblier than I liked so I moved them back and decided to find a better way to support it. I'm sure it would be fine but I like to make sure it's rock solid before I get under there.

First attempt at making a brake hard line. The pipe flaring tool worked well.

Ref the working height thing; my mates and I used to put wheels under the chassis rails on the basis that that would catch the car before it crushed us!

Yes the original wheels are under the car, so there's 8" of protection there :D
