Rob's Ur Quattro

I must admit I was surprised you weren't doing this in the first place, the car will be much more enjoyable knowing its' 100% sorted and not just shinny on top!

I was a bit optimistic really because I knew that the previous owner occasionally took the car out for a sneaky blast. So I assumed everything under there was at least serviceable. Turns out he must have been mad to drive it!

I was hoping to get it on the road then do the underside bit by bit.

Oh well, many more rusty bolts to undo :D

  • Wento for a quick trip to the petrol station. Got sidetracked. I am loving this car! It sounds like it's gargling on the fuel not just drinking it, what an awesome sound!

The relay works for the hazards but indicators just come on solid. Need to break out the wiring diagrams and work it out. It coulds be because I fitted LED bulbs maybe :)

Working on brakes is hard work! Guess which one was stuck on.

List of parts needed is growing. At least one c.v. boot, bump stops. Abs cables maybe, brake lines, and probably hard lines as I think I've damaged one trying to get the brake lines off.

Rob,

The indicator relay works properly with the wright current. On a classic system if one of the bulbs is broken, the flashing rate doubbles almost. So the current was only half of normal. LED current is too low.

erreesse

Ah, if you've used LEDs with no ballasts then Erreesse will be right and your indicator current draw is too low to operate the flash relay at the correct speed.

New pedal rubbers :)

Hang on in there Rob.  I was in a similar boat with a Mk1 Golf years ago, where everything seemed to just open up another can of worms (mostly metal ones).  Slowly slowly catchee monkey.  As B33fy said, sometimes a bit of breathing space can do the world of good.

Pedal rubbers are a bit close together aren't they?  :p

I hope all this money isn't meaning the Baby Kiwi Sanctuary is being neglected. I might have to move over there sooner than anticipated if it is...

New pedal rubbers fitted. The accelerator one doesn't fit, ah well.

Otherwise I've mostly been trying to loosen rusty nuts, with varying success.

Front rollbar bushes, I have new ones :)

Haven't got the nuts loosened at this end. So much rust!

Plan is now to strip everything I can from suspension and running gear, assess what I need, buy parts gradually and re-assemble.

I've already bought new engine mounts, subframe bushes, front rollbar bushes, wishbone bushes, strut top mounts, rear diff mount.

Need to check gearbox mounts, though I might as well just replace them with everything else I'm doing.

Everything's so corroded, I need to suss out what to keep and what to replace. And what I can replace!

Got one strut out at last!

Rear struts are ready to come out but the shafts are rusted into the hubs I think. They're not budging anyway. The fronts came loose with a quick tap. Rears not so much!

The exhaust bolts will need cutting off I think. And I'm buggered if I can get the driver side steering rod ball joint to split.
I haven't tried heating anything yet, though. I'm doing this in 30-60 minute chunks when I can sneak down to the garage :D

I'm not a fan of these things!

So yeah the parts list is growing.
I need to buy some more stands to hold up the gearbox while I remove the subframe. The subframe is in a bit of a state, dented and rusty and filthy. Once that's off I can get a better look at the engine mounts and exhaust/downpipe, none of which look very convincing.

I think the GT subframe was in better condition but I won't know until I compare them whether they're the same part.

Almost all of the the brake lines look pretty corroded. I hope they are possible to sort out without removing the engine!!

I was looking at these last night...

Probably not a good idea, or likely not legal in NZ but they do look pretty.

Looks like the shocks are toast. Push them right in and they don't pop out again. Will it ever end?

are you tempted to drop the engine and give it a full going over?

The thought has occurred.

I started this hoping to sort the rust, fit new brake pads and discs, change fluids and go.

Oh how wrong I was.

Surprised the bodyshop didn't say anything about the underside. Don't get too bogged down with the bigger picture Just work in bite size chunks and work through each little job, you'll get there in the end. :)

I don't know how it's taken so long? 'Wheeler Dealers' would have knocked this one together in about a week...... :D:D:D

I think after having it so long they kinda rushed it, and overlooked that part.

Wow Rob! So much work. But you've come this far, so you might as well complete what must surly be one of, if not the, best Quattro in NZ. Just looking at those gorgeous wheels must give you goosebumps and remind you of how important this restoration is :)
