Pulled out the vehicle speed sensor. I think it's busted. There was plenty of gunk and corrosion in the connector but the O-ring is broken on the sensor itself too.

Back on its wheels at last!

  • Wento for a quick trip to the petrol station. Got sidetracked. I am loving this car! It sounds like it's gargling on the fuel not just drinking it, what an awesome sound!

Ooh, ooh, ooh, well, I pulled the other half of the speed sensor out, the above was only half of it! I cleaned it all up more, clicked it together properly and screwed it back in place after testing that the drive part on the driveshaft worked.

And it works! Managed 6kph on my drive :D
Better book a WOF then, see what happens!!

Pretty sure my rear diff is locked and the control isn't working so that's another thing to fix.

Made a clean bit. Testing a few last things before first WOF. Number plate lights didn't work. I'm sure I tested them before. Both bulbs were toast anyway so that's now sorted.

So I booked it in for tomorrow morning. Gulp...

Fingers crossed.

WOF Time....

22228545_1146322978801330_30382001072135

Failed :D As expected really.

22279927_1146325032134458_72350116669541

Rust on the sill - expected that.
Steering play
Top mounts not sitting properly
Exhaust hitting driveshaft (expected that too)
Steering rod hitting things it shouldn't (it's the LHD one, I thought it fit. bugger)
Also the speedo stopped working again on the way back.

Sorry for the wobbly cam, the mount I used was not good for this job!! Thought I'd upload this anyway for the 5 cylinder noises :)

That's good work Rob, the list isn't that long.

shouldn't take too long to fix.

Dirty car:

Tie rod had returned from HBI Engineering and looks like new.

Should be able to get it fitted tonight, tweak the exhaust then get the car back on its wheels again.

Haven't had a lot of time to work on Rusty this weekend but it's back on its wheels with working steering. Plus I picked up this little gadget as the battery seems to be draining itself far too quickly. Might be a worn out battery or something draining it, not sure yet. You can Bluetootth to it from a phone to monitor battery charge.

That's a nice bit of kit

Picked this up from VW. Hoping it will be adaptable to make my speedo work again.

Hard to tell from OEM
Hopefully it works. Test drive on Monday!

As for the battery - it's drawing 0.04-0.06 amps at standby, and in five minutes where all I did was unlock and lock the car a couple of times, test the boot light, and run the interior light it went from 41% to 26% charged. Time for a new one I think!

A little bit more convincing...

22792382_1162523307181297_42026548800246

Slightly improved weight distribution due to whopping big new battery. Need to work out a way of strapping it down.

22904555_1162538997179728_26694191368240

i spent ages going around various Super Cheaps and Repcos trying to find a battery with terminals the same way as my existing one then realised when I got home that all I would have needed to do was flip it around and the wires would have reached. What a muppet.

On my way out to get the rusty sill checked out.

80's goodness

So the speedo repair didn't work, read zero the whole time. Need to investigate that more.
I've booked the car in for rust repair soon, plus a wheel alignment and re-bleed of the brakes this Saturday. The brakes are really spongy and I've bled them twice. WIll get a pro to do them :D

There seems to be an issue with idling once warmed up, revs drop way down and the car stalls.

Other than that it feels so good to drive it! It makes an amazing noise, steering feels good, it makes me grin :D

It was in at my mate's detailing company for a clean up for sale. You clean them with a scouring pad!

It's original LHD in great condition. Not big inside though - I had a sit in it and my head was rubbing on the roof and I'm only 5'10".

The owner is apparently wanting $90k which seems a lot to me! About GBP 50k

Not bad if it has a working Flux capacitor and Mr Fusion on it though! ;)

Not sure what they go for here, these days?

Never really appealed to me really, film references aside :)

The suspension has settled a bit. Reckon my old car would pass the shoe test?

Going in for wheel alignment, brakes bleeding and exhaust alignment.
I've bled the brakes twice and they're still spongy, time for a pro to do them. Exhaust alignment because them doing it on a ramp is much easier than me laying on my back under the car.

23275494_1167797569987204_13243430158156

Apparently the brakes work properly now!
Update on the list :D

Wheel alignment done, brakes bled, exhaust adjusted but still knocking when lifting off the throttle. Next: rusty sill and working Speedo.

The speakers were just a few mm too deep to fit properly in the holes and it bothered me that they didn't sit right to I got some thin spacers to push them out a bit. Abtec Audio Lounge made them for me while I waited. Great service!
