Back on its wheels at last!

  • Wento for a quick trip to the petrol station. Got sidetracked. I am loving this car! It sounds like it's gargling on the fuel not just drinking it, what an awesome sound!

Great updates, the seats have come up great and the coupe logo, must have missed the update on getting your cool Audi plate , and have you converted it to 14 wheel drive judging by how many tires you have! :D

Er, I'm fairly sure that the "backflash" panel is from a coupe; the quattro ones I remember all read "quattro".

I had to double check but they definitely all read COUPE. The rear window demister reads QUATTRO, and the rear badges, and the side windows.

Oh ****! I've just had a 'crisis'!!!

:D  :D  :D

I installed a little fuse board for the various devices which need a switched live. And tidied the wiring up a bit. Not much I can do about that massive bundle as it's so tangled together.

Watched a rerun of wheeler dealers last night where they resurrected a silver quattro, it definitely is a lovely car.

The wheeler dealer one also said "coupe" on the back not "quattro".

I realised when I moved it that something is stopping the car from rolling smoothly, most likely a stuck brake caliper.

Other than that I need to fix the passenger window as it's really stiff in the tracks, put the bottom of the dash back together, and sort out the wiring to the headlights which has been re-done to provide better voltage, but the sidelights don't work, headlights seem to be on full beam only and one foglight only works with full beam, the other works with sidelights or headlights.

I was really happy to receive my shiny brand new passenger door handle yesterday. I thought I'd pop down to the garage for ten minutes and fit it. 90 minutes later...

It looks the same as the old one but the lock barrel is thinner so I can't swap over my old lock. And it doesn't quite line up properly, so it catches. So it'll have to come off again for adjustment. It's never simple is it?

I bought a new boss for the steering wheel, hoping it would solve my horn-beeping problem, but I have bought the wrong one. Doh. I went back to my modified one and added some screws. Might do the trick.

Also spent another hour trying to sort out the front lights. I worked out the problem with the fogs, they are correct now. There's a dodgy connection on one main beam light which I need to repair, and the sidelights still aren't right but I'm getting there!

Also I was happy to have the loom from the donor GT to use to replace a broken headlight connector.

Lights are working well now, except I still only have full beam, no dipped.

Mystery solved! I plugged in the stalk from the GT and got dipped beam. There's an obvious click when pulling it forward which the quattro one doesn't have. Just need to take the steering wheel off again and either fix mine our swap to the spare.

More little things - alarm and remote locking is working and indicators are connected now.

In other news, all lights are now working. I swapped the hazard switch for a spare and the hazards work now, but the indicators still don't flash, just come on solid. I traced a few things and found out a few things it isn't :)
Full/dipped beams are working now too.
I've also sorted out the passenger door handle.

the indicators still don't flash, just come on solid

From my experience of 1970s/80s VAG components, check the hazard light relay if you have one.

The relay works for the hazards but indicators just come on solid. Need to break out the wiring diagrams and work it out. It coulds be because I fitted LED bulbs maybe :)

Working on brakes is hard work! Guess which one was stuck on.

List of parts needed is growing. At least one c.v. boot, bump stops. Abs cables maybe, brake lines, and probably hard lines as I think I've damaged one trying to get the brake lines off.

Rob,

The indicator relay works properly with the wright current. On a classic system if one of the bulbs is broken, the flashing rate doubbles almost. So the current was only half of normal. LED current is too low.

Feeling a bit disheartened tonight, got some flare spanners for the brake lines, went down to try them and the nuts are so rounded that the spanners won't even go on.
Then I had a look around under the car and as I was thinking it looked to be in a bit of a depressing state I spotted some rust, which when I poked it turned out to be quite a big hole that was somehow missed during the repairs.
I thought I was close to the point where I might be able to drive the car, but it's nowhere near, and the future holds much more spending. Sigh.

Next steps - carry on stripping out the suspension and brakes, start cleaning thngs up and work out how many more bolts and bushes and parts I need!

Oh and I found someone who can apparently supply replacement OEM ABS looms. Over $600 each and there are four. Pretty sure just the outer insulation is gone so that'll be a repair job :D

I think it's more having to admit to myself that it's going to be a lot longer than I hoped. I obviously had my rose tinted specs on when I first looked under there :D

So, I'm resigned to driving a 275,000km Mazda for the foreseeable future.

I am going to pull out the lot, it's the only way to make sure it's right and avoid doing it all again later.

That exhaust looks like it's toast too. This is on my Christmas list but Santa's seriously out of cash this year!!

Best thing I did was to park mine up for a while and have a bit of a break, albeit enforced because of the clutch. Gives a bit of breathing space for the finances and a break from the incessant problem solving. Hopefully back on it in the new year with renewed enthusiasm. :) maybe worth thinking about Rob, as these things can get all consuming at times.

I must admit I was surprised you weren't doing this in the first place, the car will be much more enjoyable knowing its' 100% sorted and not just shinny on top!
