Back on its wheels at last!

  • Wento for a quick trip to the petrol station. Got sidetracked. I am loving this car! It sounds like it's gargling on the fuel not just drinking it, what an awesome sound!

You know what's annoying? Paying monthly for a car park then leaving the pass in your other car and having to pay $25.60 to park for work. First world problems I guess.
At least I found an Audi friend to park next to.

It's bad enough just curbing a wheel. You must be devastated.

On the plus side, with it being painted recently it shouldn't be too hard to blend the paint.

Finally got the Classic Quattros under tray fitted, fixed the passenger side window switch and the drivers seat adjuster. And worker out why the heater isn't coming on. Need to take the centre console apart and see what the wire is fouling on.

Saturday night meet in the dark :)
Had to get a jump start from Bryan's AMG Merc.
My almost new battery is only delivering 10 volts despite being fully charged.

@RobClubley - That sounds a lot like your new battery has a dead cell. That would be returnable under UK consumer law.

I took it back to the shop and they tested it. The tester says it's giving 12.7v and 700 amps. So it's something in the car. I tried a second new battery too just to make sure and had teh same symptoms.

I'm thinking maybe an earth is dodgy somewhere.

OK; that does sound like something's staying live when it shouldn't be.

After an incident with the broken door check strap (which I'd forgotten to fix) and the Wellington wind, plus the garage door incident, Rusty was looking a bit battered.
It was time for a trip to Finer Details NZ for some bodywork love.
It's looking great now. Just need to re-apply the pinstripes.

Made a couple of chunky new earth cables. The starter and surrounding cables look a bit iffy. I didn't have much time today but I'll remove the starter soon and check it over, and the cables. I haven't found the third engine earth yet. Apparently it's on one of the engine mounts.

I also bought this as I'm charging the battery at least once a week - still need to track down the source of that. But in the meantime this means I don't have to keep taking the back seat out and sorting the seatbelts out every time.

I'm wondering if this is the cause of my intermittent start issue. The wires were green inside the shielding and the shielding was crunchy and cracked. So I made new wires.

OTish, but was the late model white M*n* a Clubman lacking the plastic wood that normally goes inside those chrome trims?

I didn't look closely at it because it was cold and peeing down.

Hmm just checked its plate and something fishy is going on...

Year: 1981
Make: BLMC
Model: CLUBMAN
Colour: Brown
Body Style: Saloon
Plate: KA6197
Engine No: 030884
Chassis: XE20280328278
Vehicle Type: Passenger Car/Van
Seats: 5
CC rating: 1,275cc

Fuel Type: Petrol

It has no WOF (MOT equivalent) listed since 2007 and some dodgy numbers, presumably clocks replaced:

And a Clubman was normally a 998cc (early) or a 1098cc (later), but not a 1275cc (reserved for Coopers and 1275GT until after the square "clubman front" was dropped).

It appears I have a serious boot leak, and some surface rust to sort out. Sigh.
One day I will fix an issue before I have to add more to the list.

I realised we never made any drain holes in the boot floor when the bodyshop had the car. So I made some. Need to make them bigger and add rubber bungs. And paint it properly of course.

36604928_1389744831125809_69002640064354

The ever-growing job list.

@RobClubley - Based on past experience I'd start with checking that the boot lid presses against the seal all the way round.

^^ what Ken said,

I get a A4 sheet of paper, and tear it into strips, then trap a few over an 18 inch length between the lid and the seal.

I then gently pull on the strips, the ones that drag usually mean you have some seal contact, but the ones that pull out easily will narrow down your attention area.

Can you get Bilt Hamber products over in NZ?, some of their anti corrosion products are top notch if you can get them.
