Back on its wheels at last!

  • Wento for a quick trip to the petrol station. Got sidetracked. I am loving this car! It sounds like it's gargling on the fuel not just drinking it, what an awesome sound!

A shiny new brake light switch has fixed the intermittent brake lights. I can't see any sign whatsoever of water in the headlight. So I'll book in for a WoF re-test next week. First chance I'll get to drop it off.

@RobClubley - It may help to run dipped beam driving to the test centre too.

Looking forward to this evening.  WoF failed Saturday because he didn't like the brake feel on a test drive and "his colleague who works on Euros says it should have good brakes".
Not convinced by that at all!

So tonight after rush hour I'll drive over to a friend's garage who are a European specialist and used to working on old cars.

I would have taken it there earlier but it's a 20km drive down the motorway and through the city centre and I didn't want to drive it that far without a WoF. I think it will be fine and it is legal as it's going for remediation work for a WoF.

I'm also meeting a mate there who has an 80's Coupe quattro and we'll have a quick drive in each other's cars to compare braking. Not a fully fair test as he has Wilwood brakes but he should be able to assess my brakes at least. Plus he also recently sold a 200 turbo quattro which had the exact same Girling G60 calipers.

That was awesome! First drive on the motorway, doing the 20km to The Toy Shop Wellington.
Made a new friend at the petrol station. That will happen a lot I think.
And what's that in the background in pic 2? A Coupe quattro with properly working brakes, that's what.

By the way according to the trip computer I averaged 16.5mpg, which is 17.1l/100km.

So that was a failure based on opinion, despite how 1980s VAG are notorious for poor jump-in due to having right hand drive pedals but retaining the wrong-hand drive master cylinder location and requiring a cross-linkage.

  • Author

Seems that way, but a second and third opinion declared my brakes to be crap :)

You may well already know this, but UK brake tests are based on retardation available and cross-axle balance, not "tester's opinion of pedal".

There is an official test and testers who can't afford to have the full testing rollers fitted in their workshop have a mobile machine, but apparently it is rarely used!

Similarly the exhaust noise test is based on the tester's opinion, not a noise meter!
There's no emissions test.

This is the update from today:

There is a fluid leak at accumulator area which needs sorting.
Calipers seem OK.
They are going to take a look at master cylinder today.
The discs aren’t right. The pads don’t contact the full surface area.

Toy Shop supplied the discs and are going to resolve that issue. New discs will be a week, so Rusty will be sleeping there for a while.

I've asked for a price to change gearbox and rear diff fluids while it's there. I don't fancy doing those without a hoist.

Small update - the calipers are good, but seals on the master cylinder were not so good so they're replacing them. Waiting on them coming in from overseas.
But they're still not sure if that's what the main issue is.
Hoping it's nothing to do with the ABS pump as that sounds expensive.

Just a bit of progress then! :o

Fingers crossed that'll then be the brake issue sorted.

Brakes will be going back together later today, with the re-sleeved master cylinder, refurbed front calipers and correct front discs. Hopefully that will mean the brakes issues are solved.

They have it all back together but the brakes still aren't right. They'll get back onto it Monday and bleed the system again, and if they can't get it to bleed they'll be removing the ABS pump for checking.

Got to love this photo that The Toy Shop Wellington just sent me. :D

In other news - my brakes should now pass a WoF. Apparently they worked but the car dived left and right under braking! Then they worked out that there's a bleed process for the power steering pump which also provides pressure for the brakes. Bleeding that sorted it.

But there are a couple of other things that should have failed the last WoF - headlight bulbs which I bought which are a bit of a weird colour - will swap them for originals, and rear seatbelts aren't retracting. They're new so just need adjusting.

I came across that brake pump when I was still in the trade and these were new cars then (now I feel really old saying that - sigh) really eccentric idea not that different to the power pump idea on citroens except the pressure is much lower in the line.

You must be getting a tinge of excitement now as the end is in sight surely Rob?.

Good to see this coming together.

It feels so close now. Can't any reason why I won't be driving it next week. Let's see!

Went to The Toy Shop Wellington and did a bit of work on the headlights to help sort out the alignment issues
