1.8 TSI engine failure and issues (UK)

Featured Replies

Hello,

I need help on the following issues;

Background Information

  • I had my car engine replaced under the SKODA extended warranty back in May 2015 (I purchased a SKODA approved used car back in Dec 2014, reg 59 Octavia L&K estate dsg with 12 months extended warranty).
  • I was topping up the engine oil (within 3 weeks from the purchase date) for first two months then I took my car to a SKODA garage for an inspection.  They couldn't find a fault or leak. They asked me come back after 500 miles to measure the oil consumption rate.  It turned out the engine oil consumption rate was higher than the SKODA guideline. They stripped the engine and an assessor concluded that a replacement engine was needed.

Small Issues

  • The day I drove my car with a replacement engine, I had to go back to the garage within 10 mins of driving as a engine warning light came on.  They inspected that something wasn't connected properly and I had my car back within 10 mins.
  • A day later, the engine warning light came back on while I was driving and I went back to the SKODA garage.  Again, something wasn't connected properly and got my car back within 10 mins.
  • I drove my car for about few more days and a new warning light came on for a few seconds and disappeared.  I think the warning message was "Oil pressure: Engine speed max. 4000 rpm" in red colour. When I went back to the SKODA garage right away, they couldn't find anything.

  • After I have done about 1000 miles with the replacement engine, the engine oil warning light came back on.  It only showed for a few minutes and disappeared when I started the engine.  I checked the engine oil level and it was above the minimum level.  I didn't check the engine oil level when I had my car back after fitted with the replacement engine so I don't know how much it consumed.
  • I rang the SKODA garage today and they wanted the car back for an inspection.  Earliest they can do is next Wednesday (29th July 2015). They insisted that I shouldn't be driving the car as it may cause a damage to the engine.  Since they haven't inspected the car their response was very cautious.
  1. I was advised not to drive my car until they can inspect the car. Should I get my car towed to the SKODA garage (about 5~6 miles away)?  They don't want to pick up my car.
    1. a) If yes, can I use AA/RAC to do it for me as a breakdown service? or Do I need to arrange it for myself?
    2. B) They also suggested to take it to other garage for an inspection if I want to get resolved before next Wednesday.  (I thought this could make things even more complicate if things go wrong as I don't want to end up with two skoda garages not taking responsibility). Shall I consider this option or not?
  2. Their coutersey car is not available for next two weeks.  They said they cannot commit to anything before they can inspect the car (eg cost of inconvenience).  If it turns out the fault was caused by the SKODA garage, could I claim the cost of my inconvenience such as cost of alternative transports to work (taxi/bus/rent car).
  3. How/What do I need to make sure if the repair work is carried out correctly in the further.  I was given very little information when the replacement engine was fitted.  They didn't explain to me the cause of the fault and how they repaired other than a engine replacement.
Any advice would be most welcome!

Thanks

Sam.

I assume you have the Skoda warranty and their breakdown cover? In which case they can do an "emergency" car hire to you until the dealer can get you into a car. Have the car recovered to the dealer (might want to try another one given the problems you've had). They can then drop off a hire car which you then leave at the dealer, this can up for a few days or so.

P.S You should be given an invoice of any repairs with £0 on it of course. Ask for the print outs of what's been done, get onto Skoda CS and get them to talk to the dealer oon your behalf, make sure you tell them you want a free service as compo once its sorted out. Ask for the dealers senior tech to check the work.

Thanks about the "emergency" car hire.  Exactly what I need.  What is "SKODA CS"?.

Mike:  It is a massive thread and I should be on the list. I should have posted mine on that massive thread. Thanks for letting me know.

Skoda Customer Services, at a guess.

I too was on the understanding that with Skoda's warranty that you got free breakdown / recovery service?

Call them up and they'll come round and take a look at the car. If they agree it shouldn't be driven they'll arrange to have it recovered to the local Skoda dealer free of charge and put you in a hire car if the dealer can't supply a courtesy car.

I appreciate this relates to the new car warranty, but hopefully this also applies to Skoda's 12 month used car warranty too? Check the small print.

Updates!

I rang SKODA roadaside assistance then

  • they arranged a taxi for me to work on Monday morning (also covered the fare).
  • they arranged AA car to take my car to the SKODA garage on Monday morning.
  • they also delivered a replacement car to work around 10am on Monday for next 48 hours.

they were extremely helpful.

I got a call from the SKODA garage and they inspected the car on Tuesday.  A warranty inspector (?) came out on Wednesday and approved for a turbo charger replacement under the extended warranty.  I returned the replacement from the SKODA roadaside assistance to the SKODA garage and they provided me a courtesy car until I got my car back on Sunday morning.

I had an engine oil warning light and next thing I know is that the SKODA garage is replacing a turbo.  So I asked for some background information and  I was told that it was likely that a failure of turbo charger was lead by the initial engine failure.  They often find faults in an engine and turbo charge together (due to oil leak failure), but in my case the turbo charger was OK when the engine needed a replacement.  Hence did not replace the turbo charger with the engine.  They asked me to come back after 500 miles to check the oil level.

I am not sure what parts were replaced by the engine replacement after turbo charger failure.  I need to find out as a service is due less than two weeks time.
