7 weeks of ownership - not for me

in the UK you can only have the 150 or 184 TDI as a Scout 4x4. That's it. Two 4x4 options, no more.

The scouts are the only 4x4s you can get? I had the impression that the normal 150 tdi was available as 4x4 there? Was I mistaken?

I can see why they dont sell the 184 4x4, as it would probably take over for the vrs tdi. Spec it sportsuspension and sportseats and you would have a real vrs-killer.

Yes we can get the normal 150 and the 110 TDI in the 4x4 as well as the scout in either 150 or 184.

Ireland can get a non-scout, non-vrs that is 184 which is nice if you don't want to shout about it. They also get the 1.8TSi 4x4 but it now only comes with a brown dashboard

I have also got rid of the Octavia, nothing wrong with the car in general but I guess the pcp option wasn't the best idea, especially looking at the depreciation rate.

Dealers not interested in deals with year old cars!

Now have a golf gte on lease ;-) and paying a fair bit less each month too.

As you can see in this brochure the 4X4 option is available on the standard Octavia estate manuals from SE onwards.

If you want a DSG 4X4 that's only available in Scout form

Well less boot space obviously as it's not an estate. Cabin size is the same though.

Is it the legroom in the backseats?

Its been ages since Ive been in a Golf, so have no idea how they are these days.

But I really wanna try a GTE.

As far as I can tell it's the same amount of legroom, certainly doesn't look any difference.

Trust me, the c class or golf has not got the same legroom at rear as the octy.  ;)

The test is I get my 6'3" self in position as driver, and my 5'7" missus gets behind me. only cars in the size range that we tried and were close enough for her to be comfortable was a 3 series and a mazda 6.

Each to their own, but I wouldnt touch the C class unless I was paid a lot of money. All the write ups i see go on about this lush interior, so fantastic and amazing, best of the bunch etc etc.

OK so the materials may be nice, and it may be very well put together, but to me it just looks ugly. Everything about the interior looks wrong. Plus what is that funny thing sticking up on top of the dash? Is that meant to be an infotainment system? Or did someone forget to take out their IPad after building the car?

Sorry, must calm down. I just looked at another picture of the interior and nearly puked.

Each to their own though.

Now if you'd like to cross my palms with an XE!! Now we could have a deal

I had to laugh at this, that's why we are all individuals, the world would be very grey if we all liked the same thing. I went from a very good early 2013 Octavia (yes they did make one) which never gave me any problems. The let down was the truly appalling dealer network around me. I promised myself a c class when I finished treatment for cancer, regardless of the outcome, it was my goal to aim for. So when the day came I went to the Mercedes dealer and purchased that goal. Do I have any regrets? A couple, the first being I'm seen as a snob where I live as most don't know my reasons for purchase. The second being the Octavia itself, mine was very good, none of the common problems we read about on here, perhaps I was lucky. The Octavia 3 is a very good car. I don't miss the dealers at all though. Yes, the Jag XE was on my list, it is a striking car but it's all new, and that scared me slightly, plus I'm just a little to young to be driving a jag yet. In less than 3 years time I will walk away from the Mercedes and buy something different, I doubt it will be a prestige mark again, I'm going to enjoy the now, with that lovely interior that I will not be intentionally puking over ;-)

Oh well, I'll take your word on that.

But having been I'm both this past week there really isn't the huge difference in cabin space. Granted I didn't take a tape measure out.

Maybe it's because of the thinner interior materials in the octavia :-)

Without a taller driver and reasonably tall adult behind, I am sure most times it wouldn't notice, but with 3 growing kids, the eldest being 12 and not far below his mums height already, we needed to plan for a few years down the line.

The C class I think was more because of the shape of the front seat 's back panel.

I doubt there's a lot in it, but a couple of inches makes more difference than you might think (said the bishop to the actress) :)

Back to the O.P. I would say most of his issues and unhappiness appear to stem from the initial dealers poor service, and that's perfectly understandable. I know Skoda aren't as forthcoming in correcting themselves as they used to be, but they aren't anywere near as bad as some marques in that department.

I hope all goes OK with the Audi, but do let us know what you went for, an A4 was one of my considerations first time round.

Well i promise not to come and puke over yours :D

But yes, thats why we are all individuals. Plus Mercedes wouldnt be around if everyone thought like me. Hmmm, good or bad?

My Octy (late '13) is also spot on. No problems as yet. Well, not now the suspension has bedded in. Not the best riding car around, but not the most expensive either, so im pretty happy.

Mine will be staying with me until a young 2nd hand XE is within sensible reach.

C Class particularly in Sport or AMG Sport spec are bloody lovely. A 200 petrol or 220/250 diesel automatic would do me just fine.

I bet the C350e will prove to be quite some motorcar too....no rave reviews but real world this side of a real AMG bet it's brilliant.

XE in top sports trim is very nice but jesus add a few obligatory options and you have a 40-odd grand 2.0 diesel small saloon....

They're lovely inside and behind the wheel, but they're so noisy!! The 320d, although granted probably isn't quite as posh inside as the Merc, is streets ahead to drive and is a lot more refined! My Octavia is more refined than the C220d I drove! All my opinion of course!

I have to agree with what you have said, the engine note doesn't suit the car at all. It's a good engine but I've driven plenty of diesels which are more refined. I can't knock the power though, twin turbo so it's aplenty on tap. Octavia engine was quieter but mine was petrol so not fair comparison I suppose. I haven't got the time for merc to bring out a quiet diesel, so I live with as plenty of positives over the negatives!

Horses for courses, I'm afraid. The C class is a fine car, but so is the Skoda Octavia; and when all is said and done, they both serve the same purpose of getting you and your family and friends from A to B.  However, owners of the Skoda will have that satisfying inward smile that  says you are not paying for the badge.   The car is every bit as well engineered as VW and many others, and costs thousands less! The story does not end there. Let's not forget the servicing costs and such like.  Trust me, MB dealers have the attitude that you should be thanking them for their service.

We have just ordered a Skoda Octavia SEL 1.4DSG.

Prices on a par with competition, so assume same must be said for C class   if you take a 2ltr TDI top spec and add options.

Just checked. Yep, prices similar for the 170 diesel that Merc have.

ps. Sweating emoticon because i couldnt find a puke one :D

Thats the spirit. Dont buy a Merc, buy a Skoda.............. Or a Jaaaaaaaag :D

It is strange that a number of posts have compared a C-class to the O3 as I have both, which is good; as I think they are both excellent cars. My C-class is an older (w204) 61 plate C220 AMG Sport estate which co-incidently is currently worth the same as my 63 plate O3 (as the O3 has quite a few options). Each has there own merits; the Merc is more refined in everyway incl. engine noise from the inside (outside it sounds like a tractor) and the O3 has more space (even though it is a hatch) and I get let out at junctions. But if I had to pick one, I would pick the O3 as I have growing children thus need the space. I guess the point I am making is one that a few have stated already, we all have different priorities in life and we choose what fulfills these best.

P.S. Oasisphonic - a new car is a big investment and it bad that you have not had a good experience from it, I hope things go to plan with the Audi as we all work very hard for the few luxuries we buy.

Well I hope your Skoda dealer doesn't damage your Octavia, lie to you on many occasions and then not carry out the work properly, as mine did during the first service.

Good luck with the Octavia, and good luck with your dealer :-)

I hope the OP finds happiness in Audi.

That is exactly the feeling I got of their salesmen. Like I should be lucky to buy a Mercedes and that I will pay what they tell me too and buy what they wanted me to buy (to hit their targets).

Funny one dealer left a message on my phone last week, asking if I was going to place an order or not.

Well, after 7 weeks of owning an MY15 Skoda VRS, and 12 weeks waiting for it to be built, my experience of Skoda is over, and unfortunately all i can say is thank god. Traded in at Audi, wish i had just gone to them in the first place.

Have posted my issues on several other topics but in summary the key contributors to my horrific experience of the brand are as follows,

  • My original dealer i brought the car from (Autosales - Burntwood Cannock), lied to me, and said there were no imminent spec changes at the time of ordering, and then my car got built the week before the MY16 changeover. They denied this change was happening whilst i still had time to change the spec of my car and then admitted it afterwards but dismissed it as important.
  •
  • From the  day i brought it i suffered from the pressure build up in the cabin and the low frequency boom, as posted elsewhere my first dealer had the car twice and refused to acknowledge the problem.
  •
  • The second dealer i took it to, (Trust Group - Wolverhampton) could not of been more helpful, they acknowledged the problem straight away and said the car was faulty as delivered. They had one attempt at fixing it based on advice from the Technical department, and were happy to have more attempts, and were waiting on parts in September.

But i decided i had had enough over the 4.5 months i had been dealing with Skoda. id either been lied to, or misled, and then been delivered a faulty car, and then told a problem didn't exist when it did.

Apart from the boom and cabin pressure issues, the ride was ridiculously hard, even for a sports model, the noise in the cabin was very intrusive, on some roads you could not hold a conversation with a passenger it was so poor and the standard stereo was horrible to listen to.

I had other issues with a faulty tyre pressure indicator system and the amundsen system just deleted all my settings one day for no reason.

Im sure there are plenty of Skoda Octavia VRS owners who are delighted with their car and good luck to you, I am glad your experience was worlds away from mine. But as my old Granddad used to say, you should only speak as you find, and what i found with Skoda was a brand best kept well away from.

I would like to thank all the Briskodians who have offered advice to me over the few short months i have been on the forum.

Is he on the Audi site now ?

Yes, same here, plus there us a pecking order of the service you get from dealers depending on the model you are interested in.

Was talking to the group buyer of a large garage dealership last week, he has a six month old E class saloon, and he has had nothing but trouble with it, including gearbox replacement.

Same as myself, his wife has had backache from the terrible seats, he doesn't as he is short, but the seats are woefully inadequate fir larger people.

Seems Merc build to a cost these days.....

Yep been getting that a lot, and not just from MB, BMW, Audi, Land Rover and more recently the local VW dealer started following suit. Don't have any of those cars on my driveway - wonder why?
