vRS 220 TSi DSG.

Skoda said to drive it as normal, but not to cane it for the first few hundred miles.

I've read some disparate stuff about going gentle being counter-productive or even a factor in oil burning.

I'm at 400 miles now and haven't been anywhere near the red line yet.  Am I being over cautious?

Hi Gaz,

I have the TDI but with mine I just drove it and for the first 300-500 hundred miles I would stretch its legs as much as possible but only using about 75% of the rev range at most and only when the oil was at temp. After that I slowly pushed it harder till about 1000-1500 miles.

Never missed a beat and has never used any oil with 19k on it now.

Which ever way you go I'm sure it'll be a fine engine.

Cheers Mike - sounds like you've done what I'm doing.

Should've said that my driving style includes not pushing a car at all until it's up to temperature, no matter what car I'm driving.

Gaz

No worries Gaz.

Hope you're enjoying the car.

I got to 400 miles and then started banging it on the limiter and realised what I'd been missing...grrrr.

:peek:  Very tempting  :giggle:

Run my mk2FL as above. Just don't over rev and let the oil get up to temperature.

Also run my fabia mk1 vRS like that and it never had a oil habit.

If you display the oil temp in the maxidot, you will be surprised just how long it takes to get up to operating temp in the Diesel engine. Which is why cars that only do short journeys are not always such a good buy.

On my Yeti I purchased a smoked plastic baffle that fitted over their lower part of the grille. When fitted in the winter it helped the engine warm up more quickly.

Not sure if there is an Octavia version.

^^^superskoda do one I believe

I dont do it every time I drive the car and I do use the oil temp gauge so I wait for it to warm up.

I was told by a colleague that at Neckarsulm they take customer Audi R8s off the end of the line, get them hot and take them up to full power for a shakedown.

The engines we build at work are ran on dyno at mixed speed and load for 10 hours and finish with a power curve usually before being signed off. I've ran many engines through piston butch tests where you fire the engine for the first time ever, spend 30 seconds and no more checking for leaks and then pin it at max power for 30 mins (while its still cold). I never broke one.

Drive hard when at NOT without thrashing.  You can do it without looking like a jerk.

Just drive it like you normally would.

There's no point running a diesel to the red-line anyway

I am running my vRS TSI in like I used to run cars in many moons ago. Max 75% revs for the first 1000 miles and then increase by 500 RPM very 100 miles.

Never had a problem in the past and don't really know if it makes any difference but it certainly won't do any harm if the car is to be a keeper.

At 1100 miles at the moment and can't wait to give it the beans :D

The first para makes a little more sense when read backwards but seems computer related then?  :-)

Nope still don't get it...and despite your encouragement I will probably still look like a jerk.

Just to be clear, there is advice in the manual, which err, you should state you followed if you have any issues. . .

Drive it like you stole it, thats what your warranty is for, iv never had any issues iv taken it easy for 300 miles to ensure the brakes and tyres have bedded in, then driven them as above

I'm with cortina63 to be honest - initial gentle® driving will be more for the brakes and tyres than the engine.

NOT = Normal Operating Temperature.  Water to temp & oil about 80+

Oh, and an oil change at about 1000 miles to clear out any loose rubbish.
