Ste's Monday Mop - Angelwax QED Quick Detailer

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Back from a long weekend away with the kids. Some great fun at Legoland Windsor;

but overall since the last detail - we managed almost 700miles on that tank of diesel on the Exeo.

So priority job on Monday night was a quick clean and spritz on the Exeo.... ready for it's MOT today.

Drive down to Windsor was a damp affair - the back end of the car was heavily soiled from motorway miles.

Drive back on Sunday was a warm sunning evening and the insect count on the front was high! :giggle:

A typical foam, rinse and wash routine, but to elaborate on detailed products used:-

- Foamed with AD foam lance using Ultimate Finish Snow foam

- Wheels with Definitive Decon 88 and WoWo wheel mitt

- Rinse

- Wash with Dooka wash pad and DC Car Care Shampoo

- Rinse

- Foamed with diluted AD Top Gloss Curious foam lance mix (rinse/drying aid)

- Rinse

- Dry with Big Yellow towel and MetroVac blower

- Door shuts, exhausts and alloys, wipedown with Sonax BSD.

- Tyres with Definitive Tyre Dressing

- Angelwax QED Quick detailer applied; buffed with Ragmaster blue BOA.

This QD has been around for a while - but its not one of the main suppliers I use at the moment.

Recently - the AutoExpress review had drawn it to my attention and I know a couple of guys who use it

FYI - AutoExpress review links:-

http://www.autoexpre...ax-for-your-car

http://www.autoexpre...32/angelwax-qed

Also - we commented on the recent QD thread that the QED sprayer was marked up and the Sonax sprayer marked down.

Just to confirm - the Angelwax sprayer is very much the standard QD mist-type sprayer; whereas BSD is the more directional/stream type.

Panel temp was very cool, as this was an evening detail and not the sunniest of days. Some condensation starting just as I finished infact.

The long summer nights are fast drawing in again, so approx. 1.5 hours on this one and light fading as I took the pics below.

On application QED felt a little bit grabby on the microfiber (MF). Quite disconcerting upon first use of the product it must be said.

Something I will need to check when I use it again next. Anyway - I turned the MF over to the dry side and the experience changed.

The QED buffed off with extreme ease producing very slick results almost immediately!

This left a lovely deep gloss and very slick feel to the paint;

The slickness, coupled with the very obvious jump in gloss levels was really impressive - for minimal effort.

I'm looking forward to verifying durability and water behaviour in due course.

I will also briefly comment that I was very impressed with the ease all the motorway crud and insects fell off the paint.

The last detail using Fourthwax Summer wax had obviously protected well and kept the paint slick.

Anyway - the pictures below of the finished detail.....  thanks for looking

To add to these review's I thought I would start working on a scoring system - which may prove useful for some.

I will try and improve as we go along - but this is a start.... maybe out of 10 rather than 5 will give better granularity?

STE's SCORING:-

Price Point:-       4 out of 5 (Approx £9 for 500ml)

Ease of Use:-     4 out of 5

Shine Results:-   4 out of 5

Durability:-          TBD-under review

Overall =     4 out of 5 (pending durability)

Many thanks to KarlvRS for supplying the Angelwax QED sample - very much appreciated!

  • Hey Guys,   So I finished my QED/BSD comparison today. I gave the Focus a PW rinse and you can see, on the driver side that the BSD was applied to, that it was beading better than the side with QED

Great post Ste! A decent QD is worth it's weight in gold.

I received my delivery of AW products today, with this included. I'm hoping it's similar to BSD but with easier application and a slicker feel afterwards. I believe the water behaviour should be on a par.

I'll do a 50/50 on my bonnet to see how they stack up against each other.

I think I'm turning into what would be known on DW as an Angelwax Fanboy.

Thanks for posting buddy and nice one Karl for spreading the love!

Nice one Neil - hopefully I haven't stolen your thunder with my mini-review.

Great idea on the 50/50 test - that will be really good to see.

BSD is hard to argue with at the price point and amazing performance/beading etc.

First impressions - Angelwax QED leaves a slicker finish on the paint, and easier to use generally.

Awaiting further  review - pending rain, water behaviour, and durability thereafter.

...Fanboy - I like it! As long as you are having fun and enjoying your detailing matie - go for it!

I await your beading pictures on this.....

Any testing of the water behaviour yet Ste?

Any testing of the water behaviour yet Ste?

Hi Neil - i had a quick look at the car from upstairs this morning.

Plenty rain over night here that's for sure....

Beading was looking superb - as expected.

But the missus was off out with the kids.... so no pics.

Nice one. I've done a 50/50 with QED & BSD on the bonnet of the Superb and a full car 50/50 on the focus. Are you okay with me putting it in this thread? If not it's no worries, I'll start a fresh thread. I liked it though. Totally different from BSD and the spray head is the beat I've used for a QD. Used hardly any!!

Sounds good on the 50/50 setup - it should really help distinguish any deltas in performance.

Please use this thread, no problem - if it stays on topic and to the point of reviewing AW QED - that's ideal Neil.

I certainly enjoyed it upon first use; as you say - sprayer is great and you really dont use much at all.

Awesome. Thanks Ste.

So I got round to trying QED this morning. The sprayer is bang on the money and I really like the packaging too, AW are going for the boutique style labels and the general packaging is of high quality. The smell is quite "chemically" andbthe consistency is like water.

A pull of the trigger delivers a very fine mist which is great! A few spritz's per panel and then wipe away. It spreads really well and a quick flip of the cloth to give a final wipe down and it leaves you with a lovely streak free finish. Any dried water spots are easily dealt with, which is where it excels for me. So it must have decent cleaning ability.

Something that I always wonder with a QD is how it compares to the Game Changer; BSD. I did a 50/50 on the bonnet of my Superb with the rest of my car done with QED. And then I did a 50/50 over the whole of my Focus for a fairer comparison. Here are a few pics.

BSD side, whoch was dispensed from my old Gtechniq C2v3 bottle

And the QED side.

And on the Superb

20150912_102552_zpsyuqlziny.jpg

20150912_102545_zps9lqpozjo.jpg

So, how do they compare? Well, BSD smells nicer. But due to its watery consistency, QED spreads better and is easier to use. After use, the surface of the BSD treated side is very noticeably more grabby. Whereas the QED side is very slick.

All I can do now is wait for the rain!!!

Nice. Going to have to add this to my shopping list. Don't know if it's my eyes but the QED looks a little more glassy and reflective.

Thanks buddy. There is very little in it, but QED maybe has the edge on looks. Both are great, it will be interesting to see how they compare side by side. With packaging taken into consideration, QED pips BSD at the moment, but the true test will be in 2 weeks when it gets a wash again and on Monday when it rains! I'm actually looking forward to the rain!!! Weird!

There is definitely a clear difference in the morning dew.

20150913_084813_zps1vsaofve.jpg

LHS is BSD, RHS is QED.

QED side

BSD side

20150913_084828_zpsspjkjwjc.jpg

Same behaviour is evident all over the car, but what is also noticeable is that the BSD side is quite streaky with the morning dew, whereas the QED side is nice and uniform. BSD beads are more circular in construction. I will report back after this evenings forecasted rain.

  • Author

Great first report and observations their Neil.... thanks for sharing.

Agreed - the streaks do come up in the dew. BSD is not alone on this;

i have another QSealant which does the same sort of thing.

Sometimes a 2nd stage buff after application minimises this - but not always - in my experience.

Quick beading update on the comparison.

All in all, very little in it. Slightly rounder beads from BSD. And bad rolled up the bonnet of my Superb at a slightly lower speed, but again, very little in it. I'll report back after the first wash.

Any updates Neil - on the QED/BSD race?

I was looking over SWMBO's car yesterday - a week or so on; another tank of diesel drunk.... 500+ miles.

The overall beading wasn't that great - but it had dried with quite a lot of dust after that heavy rain showers.

So I think a quick detail this evening is in order... ;)

No updates as of yet mate. The car is getting it's winter protection this weekend, Blackmax to polish and then DJ SNH to finish with a layer of Fifth element on top to review. (Kids are at parties all weekend really so best to get it done so I don't miss out on family time).

So I'll give it a strong wash with Wolf's white satin to remove as much protection as possible. Will post results to let you guys know which is more durable

Nice one - i'll be waiting on the feedback from you after this....

Interested on your thoughts with Britemax Blackmax and of course the Angelwax Fifth Element test.

It's our local festival in Saltaire this weekend - so mainly beer and food for me; no detailing planned. :sun:

Can't beat a good festival mate! Enjoy that, I'm pretty jealous!

The weather is looking good for the weekend so full steam ahead!

Oh absolutely - its a good little run from now until Xmas really.

Saltaire Festival this week to start with.....

Sheffield Festival next month - meeting up with Shaun and co.

Then KWVR Railway Music and Beer festival after that. ;)

....I might manage some detailing duties inbetween!

So I finished my QED/BSD comparison today. I gave the Focus a PW rinse and you can see, on the driver side that the BSD was applied to, that it was beading better than the side with QED applied.

The QED side

20150920_082729_zpsvetd8hka.jpg

Apoogies for the out of focus phone photos, but you can see that the QED side is a little behind but still doing a job!

20150920_082738_zps2rrcvy29.jpg

So after a snow foam the Angelwax Fast Foam and a wash with Wolf's Chemicals White Satin and there was a difference again.

20150920_084112_zps82hj2e8t.jpg

20150920_085104_zpsloiv1q1s.jpg

The QED side didn't bead up as such, but it sheeted really well, leaving that side of the vehicle almost dry compared with the BSD which beaded pretty well.

20150920_084112_zps82hj2e8t.jpg

So in conclusion, BSD will outlast QED, I have no doubt, but QED is a great product. It cleans away water spots much better which is great on my black cars and leaves a completely streak free finish that is really easy to achieve. But BSD is still great offered excellent levels of protection and is great for the winter months to top up protection.

Thanks for reading.

Top review. I rate both these QD's. Nice to see how they've panned out for you!

Thanks Neil

Ive been championing BSD for some time now

It clearly is an AWESOME product and compliments ANY wax or sealant

As a product it will take some beating. I don't find it perfect but it has some outstanding characteristics.

Thanks for the update Neil. As expected the QSealant outperformed the QDetailer.

No surprise - but it was interested to follow your test and a very good test too.

Your pics and posts seemed to capture the stages quite well; especially on the black paintwork.

Both products are in my armoury - but have different places in my detailing regime.

Keep the reviews coming, I for one, enjoy catching up on your detailing duties buddy! ;)
