Interesting. New 286bhp VW Golf GTI Clubsport...

Featured Replies

Absolutely not. The extra 10bhp is nothing the R or standard Clubsport can't generate. Allowed is the right word given that they all share precisely the same engine and turbo.

The side air channels are there on all Clubsports (standard or S) to divert the air quicker/more efficiently around the front mask, part of the aero upgrades they gave the car.

  • I really don't like those alloys.

  • The Cadiz wheels on the R are my first diamond cut alloys. I wasn't that keen on them at first, but boy are they easy to keep clean and they look good for much longer when dirty. They still look fairl

Real road reviews are starting to come out, this one's from Oz:

http://www.motormag.com.au/reviews/1605/volkswagen-golf-gti-clubsport-review/

"...Unlike the Golf R, which is composed, competent and grown up, the Clubsport is a bag of hornets. With ESP active, fun is limited to straight-line surges, but with stability control switched off, this car has its boxing gloves on before you can say “hold on a sec”, standard e-diff notwithstanding.

This uber-Golf is neither a tweaked Peugeot 205 GTI, a meaner Renault Megane RS nor a fiercer Ford Focus ST. Instead, the Clubsport takes the art of lift-off oversteer to a more skilful, contained level. This car isn’t about overt hooliganism, but it will captivate sporty drivers because it rewards accuracy..."

Glad to see they are singing from the same hymn sheet as the guys that did the early track reviews, his statement "best Golf chassis yet" sets the bar rather high I think, given that a GTI or R are not actually bad, far from it    :)

I do like in red, and prefer the rear on the Clubsport to the Golf R just because of the tailpipes.

Less being more.

Also like the noise.

Can't believe you like the red George  :D

I prefer single tailpipes as well, they're slightly bigger than the standard GTI's also. I found the R quad pipes are too fat and too many on an otherwise very very subtle car, a design imbalance in my eyes.

If you mean exhaust noise I agree, rather throaty for a 4-pot and with the DSG you get all that popping and crackling in Sport mode. What you hear from inside though is the silly Soundaktor noise, will be looking to turn that thing off. Almost everyone that disabled it said they much enjoyed the actual engine noise finally making it to the cabin.

I am Mutt & Jeff so the fake inside noises do not bother me, and to hear a car i like to open the windows a bit.

As to S they are all much the same, good for decelerating and pretty rubbish for accelerating.

When it comes to driving spirited i could not care less about how they sound, just that they do not draw to much attention

and even worse sound like they are getting a shift on while actually just moving a little quickly.

The real proof of the pudding will be 'Over Boost'. It is little use if you want someone off your jacksy and they stay with you

and they are not just getting power for short intervals.

No I didn't mean the DSG being in S mode, that's almost useless anyway, but in a DSG car, and with the Sport drive mode engaged (quicker throttle response and minor map differences to get more crackles during lift-off and gear changes) you get to enjoy the exhaust more.

To get someone off your jacksy as you say it will be enough, I can't imagine any situation than you could be possibly going flat-out in a 290bhp car for more than 10", in a public road. Even on a track 10 consecutive seconds is almost impossible. So the duration of the over-boost would be as good as permanent if it wasn't for the 10" cool-down. The Fiesta over-boost while it also has a max duration of 15" is re-set simply by lifting off. That means unless you are doing a drag-race, on a track or on a public road you got the extra power all the time.

It's days will be numbered though. Already speaking with a reputable company that have developed boxes (mainly for BMW)  that don't just blindly add boost, but instead read and work on absolute pressures like a proper remap. 500Nm and whatever bhp that translates into should deal with VW's marketing nonsense for good. They just wait to get their hands on a Clubsport and test that everything works as it should   :)

Can you not imagine that really!

Can you not imagine that really!

Lost you there, you mean the "don't need more than 10" of WOT" part?

Seriously £44k for a Golf?

I don't really care how fast or limited edition it is.

If I'm spending £44k on a motor it's not going to have a VW badge on it.

So the next obvious progression for VW after the money making GTI Edition 40 will be, as with the Leon Cupra recently announce ,equip it with the current Golf R 296bhp with additional tweaks to brakes, handling etc. So Golf GTI 300ps 2017 facelifted mk7

Opens up the slot for the uprated facelifted Golf R with say 350 bhp, brakes handling and next spec Haldex, mid to late 2017

Follow on 2018 R 400 PLUS launched mk8 . Justifying same price,£45K base model, similar to the current Audi RS3 reasonably kitted out.

What future for the Audi RS3 -(4) with 5cyl? Will that be the end of the 5cyl Power plant ? After the runout of the latest TTRS & RS3 Saloon yet to be launched 2017

The VW Group have all that bits and pieces and kit and tooling and plants and can just keep turning up the wick and getting magazine and internet space and distract from a Google search bringing up the woes of VW / Audi on the first pages of a search.

VW are going Electric, Electric Motorsport, Electric in the USA & RoW, all is positive.

30,000 are losing their jobs in manufacturing internal combustion engine vehicles and components and 9,000 new jobs are being created.

(Not in manufacturing EV's but likely in the Media Spin & Legal Departments.

So a few new hot Motorshow models from VW are nothing new.

Just wait for the Hot Electric Vehicles, and the tasty EV Motor Sport Replicas.

Will the EVs have EU Clean subsides, then like UK gave Nissan etc. Or will profit dictate these will end worldwide. What will Brexit

do??

Cracking deals to be had already George :http://usedcars.volkswagen.co.uk/e-Golf/e-Golf-115PS-BEV/West-Sussex/4040710-606088774-123177.aspx?srcmdc=se_na_re_ lol

For me the JCW GP was the one.. the supercharged one.

Yeah its perhaps not as fast as they are now but brill fun. Proper drivers car, handling is awesome for a little motor and a supercharger whine to go with it.

Practicality is out the window mind...

Nice one.

Still be flabby compared to the supercharged one though i guess?

I liked how light it was. Not particularly fast one the straights but well thrashable and handling to suit. Just a well balanced, set up car imo.

You can ruin things by having too much power n not enough handling cant you :D.

The very limited in numbers 'VW Golf GTI Clubsport S' gets wonderful rave reviews from Motoring Journalists so they like it even though they were all sold and not available,

that is unless you are prepared to pay the crazy asking prices that sellers are asking.

They are really trying to make this Golf be seen as a future 'Classic' or Collectors Vehicle.

?

Has anyone driven one & are they as good that they are worth £40,000 plus.

Personally i still lust after owning an Audi RS4

& a Golf Hatch does not even get into my top 10 wants.

Good points George.

Nearly a dozen now on Autotrader ranging from £39999 > £49995 , Some VW Dealership Directors or VWUK are getting good backhanders from these Tout dealers imo.

If you want stupid go look at Fiat 500 Abarth versions, or the Ferrari version..........

Cant understand anyone buying them for that money. I know we go on about badge snobery alot on this forum but i really would want atleast an Audi badge for that much money.

Crazy isnt it.
