Focus RS details and pricing revealed.

EVO have done their test too.

I tend to take notice as that as personally I find EVO's take on things is quite in line with my own.

Can't find it online yet so you need to get the magazine.

They don't rate the Audi RS3 much compared to the others.

They rate the Golf R as a good car with a nice interior.

They rate the Focus RS as the most fun.

Who did the driving? I've lost my subscription somewhere, but always found then them to be a variable bunch in terms of ability / insight.

Jethro I think?

I suspected as much, he's a bit too much of a loon for me. I prefer the more cerebral approach from Car generally.

This one just reaches the same conclusion as the others.

I wonder which car they would buy with their own money if it was to be the Daily Driver Family Car!

How the hell is the Golf faster than focus rs? When the focus rs is 345bhp vs 295 in golf? Also golf didn't even get a good start so gap would have been even bigger.... Do we know how much the focus weights yet?

This gives some BHP & Torque figures clearer than in other articles, and at least gives the difference for the North American cars.

Kerb Weight 1,575kg

DSG vs mediocre manual shifting is your answer. Anyway that's a totally useless test anyway as the Focus will be significantly faster on any real road or track situation involving bends or not. I still can't understand why they do these instead of rolling acceleration drags which is what power is all about anyway. In fact if I drove a Focus RS I would love that Golf R owners thought they were faster and challenge me. Which would not ever happen of course as for some reason, all Golf R's I've ever seen are on average driven much slower than their TDI equivalents. Maybe it's because I only see some rather "matured" people behind the wheel, uninterested of slamming the right pedal by any means.

Or maybe it has something to do with focus being more than 100kg heavier. That's if it even produces advertised power(wouldn't be the first time, remeber the mk2 rs most getting around 270-280).

Surly the most important thing is how it drives and how much fun it is. Straight line duels are just chequebook exercises imho :( (I am slightly biased though :D)

Exactly.

If all you care about is 0-60mph a used GT-R can be found within £5k of the Focus RS's price...

The Focus RS looks like it's going to be like the Fiesta ST.

Slower in a stright line than it's competitors but faster down the twisties and more fun.

Yep untill that service comes around and that 5k gap becomes much bigger. But I totally agree. That it looks like it has been designed more for fun in and out of twistys than anything else. Will be good to see some track times etc.

My only worry about the drift button is people being silly and wrapping car around tree.

I'm sure the Evo  lads will be doing their normal Bedford Aerodrome run out very soon. Mixed with normal UK roads.

My guess is that most Focus RS' will be running the superior Michelin rubber as well.

Back to the real world, and surely on UK roads with bends a Ford Ka (or even a Dacia Stepway) is surely more fun around bends on a 60 MPH NSL road.

All the other stuff is just the parallel world where there might not be a police officer around the bend with a Hand Held speed gun.

All the Overboost Stuff is a marketing thing rather than a Technical one,

in the United States of Ford the people want to know what Power, Horse Power / Torque you really get on whatever fuel,

and then at what ever altitude.

As a rough rule, I've always thought that the most fun cars I have owned, had enjoyable handling and just enough power to upset the handling if you wanted. My second ever car was a Fiat X 1/9 and it was Fun. Great handling and although it had a Fiat Strada 1.5 in it, Fiat luckily had thought to fit narrow Michelin ZX tyres to it, which mean in the wet in particular, the car could be a bit of a handful - if you wanted :)

You referring to me 'n 'er indoors, my son?

Our definition of "fun" differs vastly George  :D

You don't drive as slow as those lads I've seen, do you??

PS. Just found out that's London slang for wife? interesting

Mich Pilot SuperSports aren't unique/exclusive to the Focus RS by any means. The M135i has them as standard, for example. Many other very high performance cars use them as OE fittment. They are an absolutely epic tyre, by far and away the best tyre I've had on a car.

Cup 2's are another step up again but better for track use rather than the road apparently.

MPSS are being discontinued soon though apparently and will be replaced by the Pilot Sport 4....

Will I have to buy a spare set just in case the replacements aren't as good? :D

What's fast these days?

With perhaps 6,500 speed cameras on UK roads, exceeding the posted limits is getting expensive.

I don't think that I've ever been faster than 120 mph, in Germany where it's no big deal, or in the UK

before the cameras. (Early 1990's, flat-out in a Cavalier)

Used to cruise at 85 mph on UK motorways, (the 3K rpm sweet spot for my old V6 Mondeo) but I/we

seem to keep below 79 nowadays.

It's a shame given that all of our little fleet were 140 mph+ cars, but at least they are under-stressed on UK roads.

That's life in the 21st. century, big brother is everywhere!

Best regards to you, from the old & slow lane.

Well, fast can mean a lot of things that might not necessarily violate speed limits given that there's no horizontal or lateral acceleration limits yet... I don't drive in the UK so I don't know if there is a speed camera on every single piece of road as you say. In the 4 central european countries I've been driving over the last 5 years though, sports cars drivers were usually willing to go slightly above the limits if conditions allowed to, without ever becoming extreme or endangering other people's lives. In fact the situations closest to end up in a terrible accident that I've witnessed were not down to exceeding limits but plain stupidity at maybe less than 40mph.

So then if it is as heavily monitored, and you're not willing to risk going any faster than allowed there's only one big question that comes to mind? Why have you bought such a car in the first place which is more expensive to acquire, run, maintain and insure? Isn't it just mad? Why should anyone buy it? What re we doing here? :D  What's left other than maybe showing it off to the neighbor? And can that alone justify such an expense over the long run, I doubt it. Not that I have any intention of how one spends his hard-earned, just curious.
