Check your antifreeze is at least 40% before El Nino winter (sort tyres too)

Featured Replies

If we get another winter like the 2010/11 winter, where we had temperature down to almost -20c, Northern ireland had it even worse, it is probably wise to check once antifreeze strength.

To protect full a percentage of at least 40% is usually good.

50% is the normal new or replacement will for Glycol antifreeze.  Sometimes, becuase previous owners add replacement antifreeze as less than 50:50 the actual strength can be mcuh less than 50%.

Probably worth thinking about winter tyres (on steel rims).  I can recommend the Nexen All seasons and full winters as good and cheap tyres.

Order before there is a shortage !

DON'T PANIC.................................. :D

Chuck a sample in the freezer for a quick and easy test. If it's still liquid the next day, you'll probably be OK; if it's solid, not so good.

I noticed it was a bit cold last night

I'll check my Antifreeze later

Met office warned of a artic winter last year, de inched the car twice. The warned of scorching summer this year, had about 3 days. I think we'll be fine. It's been rubbish winters for the last 3 years.

....I think we'll be fine....

When has the UK ever been 'fine' when there is even a whiff of something more than a sharp frost?

Half inch of snow, slippy rails, Train chaos, again

I'll do my best

Mmmmmmmmmm   Cancellations, I might get home early

There'll be leaves on the line before the snow comes, so you'll have a few more days off.

Good test.

I bought a coollant hydrometer which is an interesting item.  Displays the temperature the collant is safe down to and it was showing only -20C when I would have expected to see more like -30C.  We had -19C in 2010 and that in Decemeber and not January or mid February as it usually is.

Weather signs from around the world show it might be one of the harshest winters in the UK ever, maybe even worse than the long freeze of 62/63 which I do not remember but parents and report said it was awesome ever as far south as Devon ie weeks of snow around.

Met office forecast for Nov-Dec-Jan is above average temperatures for the UK, but as they can rarely predict the weather accurately a week ahead I'll wait and see what turns up.

wonders if lol-lol works for the Daily Express?

Weather forecasters can't even tell us what's going on outside half the time. Never mind what might happen in three months time. Best weather forecast know to me is take a look out the window.

Certainly we are seeing drastic weather in North and South America and Australia and bad winters in Northern Europe seem to coincide with El nino events like in 2010/11.

Best be prepared.  I remember only just about getting back from Kent in two foot snow drifts and the bad weather started in late November and two feet of snow in the south of England in early December. Refresh your memories....

I remember that winter very well.

That was the winter I picked up my Fabia.

Long story short lol

No, I think he works for Renault..

BBQ on standby

We had 6 weeks of temperatures hovering around -12C and 2' of snow that winter (lowest I saw was -17C and in the day it stuck at about -9C).

The Council ended up digging up up the ice (snow compacted to slabs of ice 6" thick) and taking it to dump sites because it was too cold for salt to work.

I did that winter in the VRS on summer tyres (new baby no money) didn't miss a day.

I have to confess the logisitcs company I work for does quite a lot for Renault but then we do also dabble our own electric cars and work with PSA.

But also do stuff with several British companies, fairly recently helping with the movement of the cars for the new Spectre movie.

Also moved British exotica cars out to the Middle East in some of the most shocking colours for some of the local royals.

Loved Skoda for 20 years, then saw that Dacia are what Skoda were.  Logan is incredible for a £10K car ie aircon, satnav, phone, media.

No hot Fabia anymore so a Clio RS looks like the best like for like to me for a fun car or maybe just keep the Type S as a play thing, apparently chip to 235hp quite well and still do 30-35mpg in luxury.

Life is too short just to have one car at a time and to keep them very long but since I do around 40K miles a year they soon wear out and are gone.
