Strange Squeaking

Featured Replies

Hullo again

Now that I'm transporting a young lady on my commute I don't have my radio up as loud as normal. However, this has led to a squeaking noise to become apparent.

It seems to eminate from under the slope of the dash, in the centre. Kind of straight above the central air vent outlets (about 18" up to the screen from them.) I've found a temporary solution of a damn good thump, but it only helps for about five minutes, and I'd rather let the car squeak a bit than letting my passenger see me hitting and cursing my dashboard. :D

Anyone know of a good solution, that can be done avoiding my dealer? I'm thinking expanding foam straight up the air vent outlet. [not]

PS: Got the amp screwed in "proper job" last night, using a sawn sheet of 4mm plywood sitting behind the trim, to give something more than carpet for the four screws to hang on. I've even thought ahead and put it about 3 inches above the floor of the boot so I can remove the floor if I have to. I isn't as 'fick as I luk!

Isn't this a problem documented previously on here with squeaky air vents on the Fabia?

Damn if I can remember anything more about it, but I'm pretty sure a search will tell you about it...

Is the wood stuck to anything, or is it essentially just a really big washer to spread the load on the carpet? Wonder if the Fabia carpet is stiffer than in the Octy...

Rob.

Sounds like the usual Fabia dash squeak....comes from behind the centre vent and is caused by loose screw in dash mount (or something like that).

There's a thread seomwhere here detailing how to fix it. Be warned that the dash mount is supposedly a real bugger to get to.

OK - I'll search now

Rob - your washer theory is pretty much it - The board is about 18" square, with a corner chopped off to allow for trim refitting (an after-fitting adjustment :D) It's well wedged in there, and the amp itself helps to keep it still. There is a bit of movement in the amp itself, and if it's wiggled a bit you can hear the points of the screws sticking out the back of the thin ply, tapping the wheel arch. But it really is a small amount of movement which pleased me no end!

It looks if Matt has had the same problem and cured it - here's a quote from a thread from February 2003.

Yes let me guess, if you belt it hard in the centre it goes away for a while. Or if you

press down just above the central air vent, in the centre of the dash it stops.

If its the same as mine its extremely annoying and drives you mad. My dealer

couldn't sort it either.

What you need to do is this:

Carefully remove the central air vent by lifting it out starting at the corners. Its only held in by clips and should come out easily enough..

With this removed look behind and you will see a metal dash mounting bracket. The

dash is held in place here. A small piece of foam or sound proofing felt wedged securely in here should stop the noise.

My Fabia has suffered from a couple of creaks, but i have managed to cure them fortunately.

I hope this helps.

I must thank Matt for this thread, even though he submitted it before I joined up - I shall do some air vent ripping out tonight.

I suffered from the dreaded fabia 'creak' too J - was very annoying :)

I was too lazy to fix it myself so the dealer did it for me ;)

I'm amazed that nobody made the obvious reply to the original post in this thread - I would have thought somebody would have been onto it in a flash (ooh-er).

Now that I am transporting a young lady ... this has led to a strange squeaking ...

Well put her down and get on with driving to work then Jason!! Boom boom! I thang yow!

That's the first thing I thought when i saw Jason had posted a thread entitled "strange squeaking", Nick... ;)

But you know that round here we don't pick on Jason :D

Or some alternative replies:

So you tried the 33hz tone with the subwoofer, eh?

You asked if you could take the camcorder footage for an internet site?

That was just your passenger talking to you!

:basil brush:

no squeaks yet :crossedfingersmilie: :D

I get heat related creaks and groans in the Fabia, but now Autumn arrived 3 days ago they have decided to disappear. Which is good. The car still gets the rattle from the indash tray installed in the elegance however.

Bringing everything together, have you tried giving your new passenger a damn good thump?

in which direction rich?:D

Let's face it. Jason is out to impress here and the last thing he wants is for the 'young lady' to be telling her work collegues that she gets a lift from some guy in a squeaky Skoda. It will make us look bad and it will make him look even worse. I suggest that the entire Briskoda massive get to work suggesting solutions to this problem if only to improve his prospects of 'pulling'. There, I said it.:D

Lets just hope she hasn't got web access or we've blown it.

Take the sticker out of your window Jason, before we all get into bother.

Someone localish should lend him an Octy RS to help impress said young lady...

I'm sure Jason would be up for it (lend of the car...)

Was that before or after the 'silver' incident, Steve? :D :D

I just know what new thread Jason is going to start next... "How can I prevent my windows steaming up?"

or "how to lay the seats flat?":D

i have a feeling jasons next car is going to be an estate!:D

After!

I have the pics (I think) on the old digital camera. Need to find the power supply to get it running though, as it doesn't seem to like batteries that much anymore....

You people are flippin' intolerable!

Q - An onboard dehumidifier would help that

and I know how to make the seats go flat, but it probably wouldn't help. The car's too small in every way. I think I need to buby myself a transit and get a double mattress in the back

Anyway - I'm going to try and rip out the central air vents this morning and see what I can shove in the squeaky area!

Jason - getting the centre vents out should be pretty easy - but be gentle when you put them back in - DO NOT put any pressure on the vents themselves... the little 'flaps' are very easy to snap... :D
