questions for those who have had a custom exhaust....

Featured Replies

I have been to my local custom place today, and got the car on the ramps to see what the crack is...

people say "cat back exhaust" but it seems impossible (on my car at least, accept different vRS versaion may be different)

but due to s stupid design it seems there is no join to the cat, the exhaust is welded straight on to it! then to a bit of flexi pipe, then to the straight bit into the resonator....

what have you done with your custom exhausts?

1) cut the pipe at the cat ? (seems like a nightmare to me, with location ect , possible damage blarg blarh...

2) started the custom exhaust a bit further on, my place said, "why not start it where the first pipe approaches the resonator?"

I'm confused as there is no obvious join.... or start place..

another Q: is the cat part of the manifold? not that its going to affect it hugely, but I'd like to know... it is in some cars.

anyway, without hacking at the cat with an angle grinder, and starting before the resonator, i have been quoted £308 + tail pipe (I get to choose) for a 2.5 inch system, one silencer at the rear...

that sound ok ?

Cheers for your opinions and input!

I just went for a complete turbo back, simples...  :D

But seriously, I am confused what you're after here. Noise? That's the only gain you'll have with the cat-back. By the way I never understood people doing cat-backs, they just sound horrible (each to his own but not yet a Ferrari if you just remove some pipe) and for what?

Performance? Then you need a proper turbo back.

So which one is it?

yeah, a turbo back would do it, but way out of my price range at the moment, and I'm not going for performance increases for a while yet..... when i do I can get a jetex sports cat for that , but that would more than double the costs, money better spent on other mods, like bilsien dampers ;)

and yes its noise ;) and a more bespoke look. we have recently aquired an Abarth 500 , and I love the noise it makes, I love the noise my MX5 makes too... the vRS is too quiet ;)

My estate is the same, I've just had the centre section removed for now for a bit more noise until I go full turbo back next year, maybe that's the more economical option for you too?

Nath VRS has just had his done, maybe worth a PM to him

I can understand that a mean sounding car is more attractive but the thing is almost 99% an aftermarket exhaust will sound well... as an aftermarket exhaust! An oem exhaust will almost never sound out of place and the noise will probably match the cars character whereas the majority of upgrated exhaust systems scream "hey, look at me!"

Well what would I say, people into tuning tell me it's not loud but I I still don't feel comfortable with mine however you can't go stage 2 without a b****y exhaust. Still trying to make a quieter silencer with my exhaust maker... Something like stock sound but stage 2 performance please?

I read that the exhaust back pressure is what keeps the oil in the turbo bearing.... food for thought perhaps.

yeah, I have seen this hypothesis, another reason to keep the cat for now (it creates most of the back pressure)

I will go for a different cat, with a different turbo ;)

newbie, its a custom exhaust, built by a man in a shed (we are good at that in the UK) ;) I hope to get the sound I want... for my own enjoyment, the only people to "look at me" are the sheep lol... my average drive doesn't include other people ;) but you are right, i will have to go the whole hog, when I go for stage 2... but thats a while off yet ... step by step :)

any news on anyone who has done this with the standard cat? and where you connected the new exhaust ?

That is why I got a 2.5 inch turbo back system instead of a 3 inch.

To get the most power from a sports exhaust it needs to be free flowing however the side effect is the exhaust will be louder. So I got a resonator and silencer instead just a silencer. Yes it can be a bit loud but at low speeds it is quieter then most modified cars.

My opinion....The bilstiens are far more important then a cat back exhaust. From most accounts just getting a resonator delete should give the little car a bit bigger bark and it will be the cheapest way to go as well.

I appreciate all that, and I also got a middle resonator from the beginning (although it might not be ideally blocking the sound as it's rather a direct free-flow tube). I don't worry so much about noise when on full throttle, that's normal and actually it is not so loud at that point. What I don't stand is the drone when I am just setting off traffic lights with the throttle half-fully depressed (not racing) or normal overtaking at 80mph from 2- 2.5K rpm in 6th/7th gear. When the car builds power inside that rev range between 2 and 3K rpm, it only takes 1/3 - 1/2 of the gas pedal travel to sound overly loud. You sound like you're racing when you are clearly aren't and that's just silly. I will not say my exhaust is the best one ever built but it pretty much sounds as every other custom exhaust I have heard on 1.4 twinchargers.

Thanks geo! answered like a boss :)

No prob Sharkrider.

It just struck me, would you be interested in exchanging your stock rear silencer with mine? It will probably be more than capable of providing that extra bark you're after (remember I have two and I could give you the louder one - actually it's more like a resonator than a silencer)  That could be a much cheaper option if you're only after sound, just needs adapting and you should be good to go.

Hey Sharkrider if ur going custom u should really check out Meerkat exhausts. He is very busy so u would have to book it in in advance, But his work is unbelievable. When I go into winter wheel mode I'll take some pics from underneath so u can see the quality of his work

please PM me with details, I may well take you up on that!

I'm not that far from Scotland ;)

I was under my vrs trying to spot the join between cat and silencer, annoying cat backs like miltek don't mention any extra work needed to fit!

As for turbo needing back pressure, this is a myth. The turbo compressor wheel makes all the back pressure it could need, the less restrictions the better for turbos.

N/A engines needs some back pressure to increase torque.

I ran a decat on my old astra coupe turbo for years, the k04s oil seals didn't get affected one bit. Those turbos are made of chocolate and last 50k on average standard 9/12psi , mine was pushing 21/24psi!

it is odd though isn't it? you are going to have to cut it at some point to get the exhaust on!
