So I noticed the stop-start kicking in (as someone new to stop start, one notices these things!). Curiously:

1. When stopped in traffic (DSG in D, footbrake on, stopped) the engine stops. As designed per the manual pg119-120

2. Looks like a long stop so out of gear (DSG into N, apply handbrake, footbrake off). Saves the eyeballs of the driver behind (good). But engine restarts!!!

 

Why would the engine start when moving from D to N? (Well, its designed that way, but I can't understand the logic or reason behind this). Perhaps there is a VCDS code to fix this?

I utterly hate how stop start works with automatics. As you say, it's completely illogical. I'd prefer it to only go off if you knock it into N then back on when back to D. If I'm holding it on the foot brake then I plan to set off soon. If I've put it in N then I'm not. It's sadly not something you can change and seems to have been adopted as the industry norm.

'They' know what's best for you..........I think we're meant to go back to sucking our thumbs.

Just turn it off when you start every trip!

 

I think that its a waste of time on an Automatic or DSG equipped vehicle, fine on a manual, but I'd even turn it off on them to.

 

It's all personal preference in the end!

Oh I love it on manuals. Full control and sensible. It just seems the automatic version was designed by someone who had a bad case of diarrhoea and had to quickly give the design board something before they ran out to the toilet.

I suspect the default to stop/start is to validate the placarded consumption figures.

Perhaps it works better on cars with auto-hold?

Thinking off the top of my head here, but I wonder if the reason the engine is needed to run when in neutral is to provide power to the hydraulic systems in the DSG box, so that when you ask for it to engage a gear (ie select 'D') then it can. If you stay in 'D' then the gear stays engaged and the engine can shut down. Just a guess.

Out of interest how does it work when you put the car in "P"? I used to use park rather than neutral on my DSG Scirocco at it seemed logical, I didn't have stop/start though...

In old transmissions I seem to recall there was a parking pawl .....a finger like device that locked into the ring gear and was vulnerable to shearing off fairly easily.

I treat P as a last resort for securing my vehicle as far as rolling away is concerned.....I never put any load on it if avoidable.

I've been used to a Golf Mk7 for the last eighteen months, electric parking brake and auto hold, took a while to get used to but worked a treat, didn't have to worry about putting it on or off at all.

Had my Yeti 3 weeks and cannot get used to the handbrake with stop start. Yesterday I was at traffic lights on a slope come to a halt engine stops footbrake held I then decide it's going to be too long to hold in D so I apply handbrake put it in N engine starts confused me no end, didn't know it restarted if you put it in N. Probably switch the stop/start off. There was a guy who turned it off using VCDS by altering the activating temperatures, wish I could just disable it..

Fortunately in the Yeti the switch for the stop/start has been ergonomically placed so that it can be reached with your hand on the gear lever!

Makes sense - although a small hydraulic accumulator would overcome that problem. 

 

Looks like I'll be turning the thing off...

I got confused over this. SWMBO has a 'old' Yeti, without stop/start and mine has it. I simply switched it off.  Reading the manual for the older one it suggested  that staying in D while stationary was not good for the gearbox, so now I live with it, for short stops, but going to N for longer ones.

I agree. totally illogical, but I guess we will have to get used to things like this, as inventors invent things and legislators tell us we must have them as it's a 'GOOD THING' for some reason or other!

I roll up to the lights in N if I can see what's going on ahead and use the handbrake.

Turns out stop start also applies in P even with the handbrake.

In my Scirocco the reversing lights didn't flash (I tested it backed up against my garage) but then I didn't hang around going through the notches, it may depend how long you stay over each selection or indeed if you release the button...
