Would you like to hear my story?

Well, I started searching for this car in the beginning of 2014. I found one advertisement on the most popular Latvian advertisement site. Nice looking black Octavia estate. One owner, 4 years old, 80k km on the clock (seems a bit suspicious but might be true for Latvia - we don't have motorways so annual mileages might be low) etc. 1,6 TDI (wanted 2,0) but might be OK if other things are fine. Reasonable price. So, I called the guy and the next day I met him.

The car looked more or less OK. A bit dirty inside and some minor scratches but nothing serious. Did some test drive and everything was fine. I was willing to check the real condition of it and so we both decided that visiting a dealers service might be useful. The seller wasn't against that and we met there the next day (I might add that he forgot to be there and I had to call him but that's nothing compared to the next part).

We left the car to the garage guys and started waiting. They said it could take about an hour. Actually it was a longer process and in the end the seller started to get angry. At the moment the car was out of the garage, he simply drove away...If I said I was confused, I would be far from reality.:D

So, at least I wanted to know the results. Well, here comes the most interesting part.

1) the car had one owner in Germany, another in Latvia (mentioned only one in the ad);

2) the car had some accident in Germany and was sold as a wreck. The mileage was ~135k km then. When it was registered in Latvia, there were ~45k km on the clock - 90k missing :) So, the real mileage was not 80 but at least 170k km. And don't forget the accident;

3) otherwise the car was more or less OK.

You might guess that I didn't want that car anymore.

But that's not all. I used to check the advertisement site sometimes and once I saw the ad about that car again. And again, and again, and again...

At least 1,5 years have gone (I don't know how long has it been advertised before I called the guy) and it's still on sale! At first with 80k km, then with 130k, then 170k and now 150k km... Actually I don't even know what to think about all that :D

Just checked my invoice..at the time I bought it, it had 69815 miles on the clock... so the odometer must be travelling backwards and also the price increasing too..

I've reported it now to trading standards in the hope somebody doesn't get misled!

Might be because the first number begins with "6"0 000 - just & rounded down to the nearest 10,000!

or more chance of selling it at 60000 miles :-) at an inflated price!

There is a octavia vrs buying guide in this months evo magazine & one of the examples of a car for sale is the one mentioned in this thread,it says in the ad that its got 69800 miles on it & its and its fitted with 19" zenith alloy wheels......lol.....the pre facelift is fitted with zenith alloys & they are 18" & it is priced at £7945.  :D The only reason i can think of why they have put the price up by £1500 is that they have replaced the DSG gearbox & are trying to get some money back on the sale.

The mileage of 67653 was in july 2015 so if you viewed the car in october 2015 & it had 69815 then it will be correct & there isnt a problem with the mileage.  :thumbup: You may want to ring trading standards back if all you are reporting the garage for was the mileage.  :)

What is with the garages response to your review?

The car is still being advertised by this trader now at an increased price of £8995...the mileage is also incorrect in their ad..and has since decreased by another 5000 miles from when it was advertised in October!!.. it should read 69815 miles..as I bought it at £7425 in October with 69815 miles on the odometer!

I'd be pretty pi55ed off if I traveled hundreds of miles to see a car advertised with 60000 miles when infact it has just under 70000 miles.

I guess you could be right about the gearbox and price difference...

But still, the mileage is going backwards on the ads they post.

Yeah its bad practice to advertise a car with 60k on it when its nearly 70k,i once rang up about a car & was told it had done 100k,when i got there it was on 115k! i walked away after telling the seller what i thought of him. The garage is probably hoping when somebody views it & asks why the mileage is different from the ad they will probably say it was a typo error & they pressed 6 instead of 7........cheeky feckers!  :D

I know the physical mileage on the car was 69000, but my point was it was being advertised on Autotrader/ebay/website as having 60000 miles..

Trading Standards were very interested!

since then they may have been paid a visit ;-)

as the car has now been relisted after being taken down... and now shows the correct mileage..

It's a nice car... It may well be fixed.. ?? And if you push them for a 12 month warranty.. However, I wouldn't trust them with a barge pole.. Just my personal experience...

Alloys could do with a refurb.. (Which they said they would do as part of the deal when I bought it as they have their own onsite refurb place)
