Well, if you have a serious reason to buy a car with automatic transmission then do it! Simply avoid one with that might be bad, like this one.

Not a show stopper..but while I was changing my car due to a write off.. and a back problem that still plagues, it was just a desire to get an Auto.

worryingly its back up for sale..with no mention of the Gearbox issue..

The garage will hope somebody doesnt notice the fault you did & buys it,it looks a nice & tidy example, shame they are saying it has had a cambelt change when it doesnt have one, they would have been better saying its had the timing chain replaced, this would appeal to those in the know about the timing chain tensioner issue on the early cars.

Yeah, it deffo has had the new chain and tensioner and guides...

Just a pity the GearBox is pooped!

It might be a fault with the Mecatronic unit on the box,i know they can fail, not sure of cost though, gearbox itself could be ok.

  • Author

Apparently the took it to a Gearbox specialist and they couldn't fix it..other than replacing the whole unit

That juddering issue will most likely be a mechatronics unit that has failed. The repair is expensive.

Either you buy it as is and they reduce the cost to cover the repair or you walk away.

But there are still no guarantees that it is just the mechatronics at fault.

Sounds like they took it to the wrong place!

it was kangarooing from 1st to second gear.. totally un driveable..it was quite violent if you was progressively moving off..if you was flooring it, it would be fine..but after 20 mins test drive it was doing it all the time.. and you cant always drive it like you stole it!

Were the revs also pulsing while driving along or literally just when going from 1st to 2nd?

  • Author

just from 1st to second..

That does kind of rule out the clutches being at fault. Normally a faulty clutch would mean either 1st, 3rd, and 5th affected or 2nd, 4th and 6th depending which clutch is broken.

It does seem like the mechatronics being the likely cause but without knowing for sure it's a big risk to take.

They should take it to a place that knows what they're doing. There may be no fault codes but they can run some tests and data logs. Also running the gearbox through it's basic settings where it actuates all the gears and clutches and relearns all it's settings could help or at least identify the problem if it gets to a certain test and fails.

I went to view a car at the same garage before, it was a mk1 Octavia VRS with about 65k. It was advertised as having a FSH and was priced above the guide price for the age/mileage. Turned out it was overdue a service & cambelt and needed money spending on other bits too. I didn't bother with a test drive!

They should've disclosed something as major as a gearbox fault before wasting your time going to view it.

I'll put the reg up here in case anyone Googles it... KP09 UMS

I was annoyed that there was also 5k more mileage than advertised too, that i didn't notice until afterwards.. was advertised as 65k... it was literally a few miles under 70k too which was my absolute limit in viewing a car!

I've reviewed the garage elsewhere and put the reg number in the review incase somebody sees it too..

I was tempted to call Trading Standards and report them about their ethics in selling it on

Get them reported, might save some poor sole shed loads of hastle

Shady tactics!

Hopefully you can find a better one from an honest seller.

Searching Google for Canfield Garage brings up a result of someone who bought a lemon from them and had to go through small claims to get his money back. Always worth doing a bit of homework on the dealer beforehand!

Saw that review afterwards... maybe a god send!

Struggling to find a FL petrol with less than 70k though for my budget. (8k very top end).and the ones I have seen have already sold..

I'm tempted to go and buy a £200 banger to get around in until I find a car.. my previous car was written off a few weeks ago and desperately need something..

Don't use 70k mileage as your final border. Probably this car selling site has got some search that allows you to filter cars by mileage. Use, lets say, 80k instead of 70. You might find some nice car for reasonable price with 73k mileage. You wouldn't be able to find it if searched only till 70k.

The same with price etc. Maybe there's something really nice for 8,1k. I guess you can try to get these 100 pounds in such case.

That's from my experience. Being more flexible in your needs means more offers.

A shame, it's a real nice spec.

Factory fitted xenon headlights, rear parking sensors and sat nav / bluetooth.

A nice subtle aftermarket tint on the rear windows too.

Branded (Goodyear) tyres suggests a well cared for car too.

It had definitely had the chain and rails replaced..I think a lot of garages just use the generic cambelt whether belt or chain..hence why I was confused

I'm not suffering a mid life crisis... but as such, want something a bit fun and engaging to drive as well as sporty looks etc.. so yes, a vRS is my only (Skoda) option really..

I'm also looking at a Leon FR, however, coming from a big car, to a Leon is a bit of a downsize.. I went to drive a Tsi FR over the weekend and surprisingly it is quite big.. but the interior vRS was also much nicer and appeared more well built, although the FR came with a host of toys MFSW, park sensors, etc so a little-big car that was fun to drive and the boot not as small as I thought..however wont fit a mountain bike with someone in the back seats!

I am tempted to go and look at the Diesel FR, but concerned about DPF's...and just wondering how common the issue is..or whether you see it online a lot as people use / search forums to sort out car issues.

My drives are 50/50 town driving and shopping, trips out.. only a couple of miles to work but I'm a lazy ass and drive..lol..it would prob get a decent dual carriageway and motorway trip a couple of times a month,,, would this allow a dpf regen or would it still likely to clog?

There isn't a great deal of price difference at the pumps, but a diesel car is typically more expensive to purchase too...although second hand its not as great..

so..decisions decisions!!

Stick with petrol... should be less to go wrong and better to drive.

As said above - don't restrict yourself to cars that have done under 70k, you could miss out on a good car that may only have slightly higher miles.

Dwabo.....have you seen the octavia vrs thats advertised on here in the classified section that was put on last night?,only negative is its a manual.

Some would say being a manual is a positive. A manual gearbox will be much cheaper to fix than £2700 if it breaks, and also be less likely to break in the first place.

Hadn't but I have now  :-)

cheers..

my only concern with buying private was that if it was to go pop afterwards I wouldn't have any recourse..

not to say it would..but for peace of mind a dealer warranty and protection is worth the extra outlay..in my opinion..
