Replacement Windscreen & Lane Assist

Featured Replies

Hello all. I've done a bit of reading of old threads regarding this bit couldn't find an answer to my question.

So I've read that the Lane Assist camera may need recalibrating after my windscreen is replaced. Now, I never use the feature. In fact, it's disabled. My question is, will the system throw up an error even if I've disabled it through the infotainment system?

My plan is to not bother getting it recalibrated - if required - as I never use it anyway.

Comments welcome.

I have no idea if it would need recalibration but if it did I would more then likely get it done, even if I didn't use it. Why? I would know it worked when I am selling it on. That's providing the insurance covered it as part of the windscreen repair. If it cost but didn't throw up an error if not done I would leave it. Not sure if that helps, sorry

It's not covered as part of the repair, hence my predicament :)

I suspected as much

Does your insurer have an explicit exclusion clause for calibrating windscreen camera devices?

I would have considered it part of the windscreen replacement.

Yes, they do have an explicit clause.

Mine didn't need recalibration, still works fine.

Read on here a while ago that after a screen replacement the Skoda dealer took it to an Audi dealer under a shared equipment deal, due to the cost of the calibration machine, and times its needed.

Switch it in and test it on a quiet road, just so you know. Mines on all the time, I like it especially on main roads. On country roads I ignore it.

Was this not for the bumper mounted front assist radar?

Not sure, but as I don't have front assist, think I wouldn't have taken note of it. As I say, only way to find out is to use it.If it has you straddling the white lines like an aircraft, you have problems......

Had a chip in my windscreen, AutoGlass came out to fill it, the repair failed and I had to have the screen replaced. Following this I have had them out 3 times on a warranty job to refit the rain sensor, first it came away from the screen after 2 days, then again after 2 hours, then it just activated the wipers constantly and would not stop. There was a fault with the pre fitted plastic that comes with the windscreen which meant vibration moved the sensor away from the screen activating it.

Had the screen replaced yesterday, this one is lots better, the rain sensor is flush to the screen with no bubbles too.

Anyway after 6 call outs it's sorted, and more importantly 6 disturbances of lane assist and no recalibration required. So don't worry too much.

I think the recalibration issue mentioned on here before was because the windscreen guy either moved the camera or unplugged something he shouldn't have. If it is done correctly it doesn't need recalibration - Mine didn't.

Thanks all for the responses.

When my screen was replaced lane assist did not need recalibrated, I think it only needs done if the ignition is switched on when the camera is disconnected or moved. My insurance would have covered the cost of recalibration as it is part of the windscreen repair. I just had a long wait for a new screen as I requested an Oem Skoda heated screen

A wee update. Screen replaced and all trim back on and secure like before. Will need to wait until I go out again to make sure all sensors work, but as a number of you have pointed out, they will more than likely be fine.

Further update to this. Lane Assist stopped working today as I was barrelling down the M8. Oh dear.

Not good hopefully it's a simple fix, not all dealers have the recalibration equipment mainly down to cost, Henry's Skoda in Glasgow have the equipment if you struggle to find one closer to you

It seemed to be working again on the way back home. Will see how it goes just now. I'm loathed to pay for a calibration for something I really don't use though.

My windscreen was replaced and Autoglass wrote to me pointing out the recalibration requirement. The lane assist seemed to be working but I wasn't convinced that it was picking up the lines as quickly and as reliably before the replacement. Additionally my car has front assist and a city braking type feature, which again I wasn't sure was working as well as previously, even though the front assist is activated from the radar. I paid £125 for calibration and it all works fine. Whilst most readers and thread contributors will no doubt agree with me that it's expensive, unless you are a Skoda/VAG tech with the correct equipment, you don't actually know if it is working at the optimum level and if you don't want to fork out the cost of calibration plus any excess, in my case £200 total for a heated screen and cal, I don't blame you. I am confident that the system is working to its optimum setting and I have proof for any (hopefully unnecessary) future accident, if/when asked by my insurance company, which employed Autoglass, that I had the work done. Cynic that I am, any excuse to avoid full payment against an expensive personal asset has been avoided.

The recalibration process is a real pain, can't believe it's still proving to be an issue. I had a real chew trying to get my screen sorted...

I had the same issue with a replacement screen. The recalibration isn't about the lane assist functioning but about its accuracy. With a new screen there is always an angular movement of the camera which  may be mm's but could be 1/2 to 1m on the road hence the need for calibration.

I've been told on a few different occasions that a calibration certificate is essential after a windscreen repair, even if you always have the function turned off. Without it insurance may be invalid. Had my heated screen replaced by Autoglass via Admiral and the full cost was covered under the standard £90 excess. Not sure how true this is but I wouldn't be risking it and it definitely should be included especially if it's a standard function on the car.

I had my windscreen changed a little over 2 years ago when the car wasn't even a year old by Autoglass (insurance Job) due to a rather large chip.

I got speaking to the manager there and he said the calibration was needed for the Adaptive cruise control/emergency braking by reason that there are two sensors looking forward detecting objects and because they are in different positions relative to each other they can work out distance and closing distance quicker than it could with one sensor. Therefore it stands to reason that getting it calibrated would be a very worthwhile thing to do.

At no point did the lane assist get mentioned.

That surprises me, I was on the understanding that ACC and Front Assist utilises only the radar behind the grill, and that the windscreen mounted camera was purely for Lane Assist and Traffic Sign Assist.
