What is the max profile tyre can I go on the 2012 Skoda Octavia. I currently have 205/55r16 on but wondering what is the biggest profile I can go before it is rubbing on the body and hindering handling?

At first, take a look at fuel tank cover. There is some information about recommended sizes. For my 2011 FL Octavia it is 17 inch rim. People on this forum use 18'' as well (tyre width/height must be adjusted by some calculator to provide correct speedometer readings) and I think it's the upper size (reasonable size). Maybe you can use bigger rims as well and they might be fine on flat ground but with passengers/luggage or on some bumps they might become unpleasant.

What particular model Octavia do you have?

What are you trying to achieve / fix?

Do you want to stick with 16" rims (assuming you are on 16x6.5 ET52) or go to 17" / 18" / 19"?

How wrong is your speedometer at the moment?

Is your suspension lowered at all?

I've run some very large diameter tyres on mine but need more info before I can give advice (no point writing a sermon if it's irrelevant).

2012-13 Skoda Octavia 103TDI Hatch. Basically all stock and yes I want to keep 16" rims. Only want to change because live in the country and just want extra profile so it doesn't blow out, basically what a SUV or Ute tyre does. Since everything is stock the speedo is correct

To keep gearing and speedo correct fitting a higher profile tyre will also need a narrower section.

e.g., the equivalent of your existing 205/55-16 is a 185/60-16 and that tyre is probably a little too narrow for the existing 6-1/2" wide rims.

A 185/60r16 will fit a fairly generous rim width range of 5"-7".  They are an unpopular size and there isn't much selection so it's a moot point.

The 205/55r16  at (a nominal) 632mm is the smallest diameter tyre in the Octavia range.  The 225/45r17 is 634mm and the 225/40r18 is 638mm.  So there's some wiggle room as there is no difference in speedo calibration or gearing.  As delivered to Australia the pre-FL Octy on 205/55r16 had a speedometer that was 10% innacurate (110kph on the dial was 100kph actual).  To make it 100=100 you need to increase the tyre diameter by ~25mm which introduces other problems but also has some benefits.

The most basic way of avoiding blowouts & rim damage due to our wonderful roads is to run decent tyre pressures.  I'd recomend you run 36-38psi

You can afford a bit more diameter without having to check the current inaccuracy of the speedometer.

195/60r16 will give another 4mm sidewall height but the load rating is only 89 and you need 91 to stay legal.  Not much selection of tyres either.

215/55r16 will fit a 6"-7.5" rim; give an additional 5.5mm sidewall height and have a load rating of 93 or 97 so that ticks all the boxes.  The 97 rated tyres will generally have a stronger sidewall. Plenty of brands to choose from.

For the next 2 tyres you would need to check your current speedometer accuracy and the local regulations on increasing tyre diameter but they would be my choice:

205/60r16 will fit a 5.5"-7.5" rim; give an additional 10.5mm sidewall height; load rating of 92 or 96.  There is plenty of choice.

On my own car I fitted 225/55r16.  It will fit a 6"-8" rim (I had 7.5"); give an additional 11mm sidewall height; have a load rating of 95 or 99.  Plenty of choice.  My car was lowered but I never experienced any interference with the body of the vehicle.  I used to run 36-39psi and the ride was very nice.

In NSW the regulation is: The outside diameter of the wheel and tyre combination must be no more than 15mm over the largest diameter wheel and tyre combination specified for the vehicle

As the 225/40r18 is the largest diameter on the tyre placard the 205/60r16 & the 225/55r16 are 15.2mm & 16.7mm bigger which may or may not concern you.  Certainly the 205/60r16 would be OK.
