Skoda Octavia Security

Featured Replies

I am slightly concerned with a recent report detailing that Octavia is really Thief friendly in that they are easy to get into. I used to have a Passat (New Shape) and it got broke into by drilling the drivers lock out, then using the convienence system to wind all the windows down. After which the thieves merely leant in and helped themselfs to my stereo, toolkit amps etc.. So when I got my Octavia vRS one of the first things I did was to get 8mm security film attached to the inside of all windows (xcept the windscreen), this as I am told can with stand a sledge hammer for a good half hour. While this may deter opportunist thiefs, standing at traffic lights etc, I am worried that when the car is parked your average IQ0 will come along and do the lock and nick all me toys anyway.

It is a company car to which I am quite limited as to how much i can modify it.

I would love to hear any thoughts from Octavia gang about how to improve security cause let's fase it vRS's are mobile targets!

if you are concerned about the convienience system you can have it disabled by your dealer, you can also delock the drivers door by using parts from the back door (new obviously). it was covered a little while back on here so a search should reveal all.

There have been a few posts about this concerning fitting blanking plates onto the door handles so there aren't any key holes... use the R/C/L to lock/unlock...

There again, if someone's prepared to drill holes in the door, they'll probably get in anyway - look into a high-end alarm if you're able to fit it to a company car. (Or don't leave anything in it that doesn't belong to the company!) :D

Nail on the head there - solution is to remove the fancy spoilers and skirts and rebadge it as a 1.6 Ambiente. Won't ever get a second look then! :D

Seriously though, to prevent the car being nicked you already have an immobiliser which should do the job. Personally I don't think it's possible to stop someone who's determined from taking stuff out of it, as they can resort to drilling the locks, bending the doors, putting a hammer through the windows, etc.

I understand where you folks are comming from, I did ask the dealer prior to delivery about de-activating the part of the convienence system that controls the windows going up and down by the key and he said it could not be done. however they did activate speed sensitive locking on the vRS though as the mrs is constantly nagging me to lock the doors having driven no fewer then 10 yards in our mondeo.

I am not so much worried about them taking the car, like you rightly said it got 8/10 from which for "theft of" but only 4/10 for "theft from" the reason is you can't take a

I don't think many thieves will hit the windows with a hammer continuously for half an hour.

Hmm...yeah, I wonder how long it would be before they'd turn their attention to the metal...and indeed, how hard it would be to peel through the doors with the right tool...

Quite a substantial investment in equipment to protect...best bet would be to spend the money on insurance! :D

understand Rob, but this is my last chance at being a imature 20ish year old with a powerful car and a SH sound system. It is well hidden and I am very careful where I park it. The window film does make you feel better when driving it. The mrs got done in gloddick sat at lights before we got married and that cheesed me off. she feels very safe driving the vRS knowing that it is not possible to do smash and grabs cause the doors lock automatically and the windows will shatter but but not give way.

Regarding the insurance:

cheapest quote

Another thought: I've had my inconspicuous VW Polo (7yr old, LHD) broken into twice in the space of two months right outside my front door, smashing a window and damaging a door beyond repair on the first occasion, but didn't take anything away - the alarm must have been the saviour. However, the second attack was through the boot, just mullering away at the barrel lock until a screwdriver managed to reach the catch or whatever and open the boot. A decent sub, speakers, CD changer all went. They left the amp though - I think because the alarm went off and they only came with a flathead screwdriver for the boot and didn't think to take a phillips to unscrew the amp from the back seat!

Still, it went through the insurance for the damage (but not for the stolen items).

So, from experience, just try and keep as discreet as possible when parking, and I think the other tip is always try and find another car which is more desireable to thieves than your own vrs. With any luck, they'll attack the scoob and ignore the skoda ;)

Cheers and lol on last comment tfboy.

I have herd a lot of talk about modding the vRS but have been told off quite a few dealers that the maimum you can mod an vRS without causing probs is the 30BHP mod. They told me after that the chasis, suspension, and general handling of the car come into question. Finally they said the car was optimised for a maximum of 210Bhp.

Now i know from your replys that a lot of you boys and girls have got some awsome power going through those front wheels. while me, I am happy with a standard vRs that will do 105Mph in 3rd gear!.

I was racing a 2000SX on the M60 the other day, we were level at 130 going past the pyramid then he just waved at me and syanra vRS. When I caught up with him (As of course you admit defeat by flashing your lights once) he had two exhaust on this thing the size of a mini football. then i noticed the 3.5 litre twin turbo sticker on the back and overtook him and gave him the thumbs up. that thing belongs on a grand prix circuit so i felt no shame.

anyone burn't off a civic type R yet?

Unfortunately two things which set you up as a target... :(

Still, if the ICE is hidden and you don't play it loudly around areas you regularly leave the car, no one should twig it's got anything in it worth nicking.

With regard to car jacking, I think what you've done with the locking and the window film is probably about as good as it gets.

Failing that, a move to Devon would probably be safer... :D

Bwhahahahaha...which dealer's have said this?

There's numerous RS owner's on this very site who can cheerfully prove them wrong ;)

The standard brakes & suspension are fine, but don't try and use all the power on cold brakes, trust me i know this is a bad idea (where IS Mr Panrix lately ??? ) :D

Welcome to Briskoda Nick. :D You might like to have a read of this article about the durability of the 1.8T engine.

Without beind pedantic, dont you mean 0.8mm? as surely 8mm will jam the window shut.

To be homest, I dont think there is anything that will stop a determined thief getting into your car, however I always try to keep the inside as plain and uncluttered as possible, keep everything valuable well out of sight and generally try and make the car appear as uninteresting as possible. If the oppotunist thief ( as these are the main problem) cant see anything then your more than likely to be ok.

I do like your window film trick, but I thought even the tinting film would help fight intrusion. I also think that any sort of sounding alarm has a good chance of putting off any prolonged attack.

I may be wrong...but just my thoughts.

Andy.

ps.....Of course, you could also purchase a mobile generator, and plug the car into it making the car "live" thus detering any sort of contact with said car:D

Oh .....and hi and welcome m8

I've found that the combination of dynamic blue and a 1.4 16V badge means that absolutely no-one takes any interest in my car - including this forum. :(

I used to work in the pyramid.

Last time i had a race i was doing 65, and a new impreza wrx sped past, so i floored it catching up on the unsuspecting driver, so this geezer speeds up as well, looked at the clock and showed 145 while the impreza was keeping up but gaining no further ground, Id expected a standard wrx to at least be capable of 150, was impressed with the handling and control of the car, then went back down to 70.

In my capri any speed over 120 was pretty intense. I wonder what a tickford would be like at 140+

Thanks for the warm welcome Gents, 100% about the film thickness. Just scared the living life out of my mate, took him for a spin in the vRS around peniculk.

I really do appreciate all the advice you have given.

incidently the dealer was Horners of Bury New Road manchester, what a bunch of plonkers.

another quick one,

Do you notice Octavia vRS mob that whe n driving the car has a tendancy to pull to the left?

I appreciate natural weather camber in the road and added power of vrs but even when your just in family car mode it still does it.

And if you mention Briskoda you get a 10% discount on parts and labour. Although if you bought from there you'll be a Gold Card holder and will get this anyway...

Hmm...is it a pull or a *pull*? If I take my hands off the wheel on a relatively flat road it does tend to head towards the left, but not in a sharp or alarming way. When I drive with hands on the wheel I don't notice any pulling.

However, we did have a member who complained of a similar thing. Well worth getting the dealer to check it out under warranty if you're concerned with it...

Rob.

There was quite a bit of discussion on here about the Octavia pulling and I seem to recall that Skoda's view was that slight pull is normal. I don't agree with that, nor does the steering of my 4X4 pull at all.

The convienence system fault that effects VW apparently doesn't work on the Fabia, and nobody has any idea why. When Auto Express tryed to break in using the system that got into the Bora & Passat the Fabia held strong. The Audi A4 and A2 also did the same. The Octavia wasn't tested so that can't be spoken for, although if you can't get into the Fabaia surely then the Octavia would share locking mechanisms and compenents, but then I would have thought VW would share them with Skoda but they apparently don't!

I am pretty sure that the Octavia has a different lock mechanism to the Golf - which featured in a highly critical Watchdog programme about the ease with which it could be broken into by activating the convenience system. This was discussed in the context of 'delocking'.

Hi guys,

Thanks for all your responses, they are greatly appreciated.

Took the vRS upto 140 on the M74 on the way home from Dundee yesterday, then me bottle fell out.

It was just a case of how do you know that vectra up ahead isn't a un-marked police car.

So anyway at just over 5000RPM He was doing 140 and I know it will pull to just over 6000.

Although it should be pointed out that most people's speedos on the Octavia's over-read... :)

That said, some members have been clocked at 145 by officers, so it's by no means unrealistic speeds...

Rob.

re. the door lock very easy to remove i can remove anybody's (fabia or octavia's) door lock and wind down windows in 30 secs.

Thanks K, for the re-asuring words
