The Golf break-in trick didn't involve removing anything or using any special tools. K, I'm assuming/hoping that you get in by means other than that highlighted in the Watchdog programme... :(

yes it would involve removing door lock barrell you would be suprised in what little holds them on

Sad story. I have always been sceptical as to whether Skodas can be entered that was. The Fabia for exapmle (if magazines are to be believed) can't but VW's can. Now it seems the Octavia can be breached that way. I wonder if it is possible to remove the convience system from the windows, after all I don't use it at all.

I think this is the first report of an Octavia being broken into using the method highlighted by BBC Watchdog a while ago. One answer described at length on a VW forum is delocking. Access is then only possible using the remote control, or by key via the boot/Estate rear door. The mod is cheap and cheerful, and fairly easy to carry out.

Edited to remove some details which could give a clue to how to break into the car.

its just as easy to remove the blanking cap :(

But then there isn't a lock barrel to turn and activate the convenience system - or isn't that what happens, K?

A discussion about delocking is here. You can find links to instructions on how to carry out delocking via that thread.

I was going to post the same thing Denis. It appears our man on the inside knows more?

And it doesn't involve a hammer

He beat me to it.

Maybe we should delete this thread? Everyone used to get really jittery on Vortex when this subject cropped up

I agree Rich, or at least have the last few posts removed. With the number of guests that visit this site. who knows who they are.

I have to agree, this isnt even the sort of thing for the "members only" areas never mind the "open" forums.

I had the door lock removed and a blank put in, but was wondering if someone could just pry off the blank and have easier access to the lock barrell or lock (I didn't see what they did to it at the shop so I have no idea what's going on underneath that blank). So is there any verdict on what's the best way to safeguard against this type of entry? Also do you guys think the window film is a worthwhile investment? I'm not worried about the vehicle getting stolen, but I am worried about having constant break ins and related expenses- parking on the streets of Prague, you're pretty much guaranteed someone's going to try and break in.

Scott

I don't know how I seem to have missed this thread completely, but the least I could do was move it to 'ICE' where you have to be a Briskoda member to read it. I have also moved a post that Scott made earlier, not realising that big k has posted the same thing...

edit: oh ffs! even this section is open to all

With regards to "clean" de-locking...

Is there a compatible door handle without the lock-hole in the parts bin? LHD Passenger door handle for a RHD car, and vice-versa ?

Scott,

Is theft from cars in Czech a big problem?

I have a friend down in Brno who's had 2 or 3 decent CD players taken from her Felicia over the last couple of years

Unless you are able to put the car in a safe, I dont think there is such a thing as a secure car, its just how much less interesting it is, or more of an inconvenience to a prospective crim.

As for car locks, they are there to just hinder any would be crims, as I belive the only way to stop door openings is by having those Yale type locks added to the doors, as lots of vans do.

Other than that, just make it appear less attractive to anyone, as that is I belive all you can do these days.

Moderator's note: Three previous posts describing how an Octavia can be broken into have been moved to a closed forum to avoid publicising the method.

Apologies to Scott, who suffered an expensive break-in, and to K who has confirmed what we all didn't want to hear - namely that the Octavia has the same security problem as the Golf. :(

Thanks Denis,

Probably for the best, as there's nothing to gain from giving further publicity to it, even if it is a known problem. :)

Didn't mean to post any tips for the thieves- i suppose they could easily troll these forums while they are online surfing the net with a stolen computer using a stolen credit card to purchase a stolen screwdriver off of ebay so they can break into more Skodas! I'll check out the forums more before I post again so i know what has been covered and what not.

In answer to Geoff's question above- it's such a big problem that the police refuse to answer a break in call unless the damage was over a certain amount - I think around 300 pounds. My neighbor had his octavia estate done 3 times in one year and a week after my car was hit, another neighbor had his Supreme broken into and the radio stolen in the exact same manner. Other than pick pockets and thieves stealing your car stereo, Prague is a pretty safe place to live :-)

Scott

sorry chaps won't post anything dodgy again.

you may have a point there geoff but not with the door handle but with the door lock it's self the passenger side door lock doesn't have the facility to be open like the drivers door lock ie inside is blanked off so i'm thinking passenger side on lhd will be drivers side so drivers lock (lhd lock) will have blank. the only downside is you have boot lock as well. i hope this post doesn't go into too much graphics as i'm only trying to help.

Big K,

What about a rear door handle used on the drivers door ??

Graham

K,

I've seen that door handle trick on other cars, that's why i mentioned it.

As for the "Convenience locking" feature, can this be switched off ?

any ideas how i can get my central locking converted to remote CL and how much it would cost?
