Now getting a small downloader (.exe file) but when trying to download it just gives a 404. Stay classy, Skoda.

You can use the file from a Passat 2016 Discovery Pro for the Columbus unit. Same maps. Download from Navigation.com

Thanks, this download worked for me.

There appears to be a solution from the Octavia III thread as posted by qido.

Smashing stuff, thanks! All downloaded and currently copying (slowly, despite USB3) to a flash drive. I just noticed that Skoda are quoting four HOURS for the nav to update. Does anyone have any experience of how long it will actually take? Is four hours actually accurate? If I leave my ignition on for four hours in Liverpool, I'll be coming back to no car. :D

Updating mine yesterday using the passat files, from start to finish about 40 minutes

That's much more reasonable, then. Thanks. :)

ETA: All done. If it helps anyone else who was afraid to ask, I didn't need keys in the ignition. Open the car, press the Columbus' on button and it picks up the update. Start the process going and voila. It did time out after 84% and switch off (I kept on checking through the window), but turning back on and hitting the update button again allows it to continue from where it left off. I left the door open after that meaning the power stayed on to the cabin, so that'd be worth doing if you can't keep nipping back to 'supervise' (even just leaving the door 'cracked' so it doesn't look open to passers by would work). Now showing version 2017.

At last Skoda have updated the page with Navigation Data update for Columbus. There is now ECE 2017 available to download. (  http://updateportal.skoda-auto.com )

Hmmmm.. Just tried to download got 404 error - file not found. Perhaps the link is there but the file is not yet ready. Will try again later.

Looks like Skoda have fixed the broken link. The official link on the update portal page is now working.

I've downloaded it, currently unpacking to SD. Hopefully the final step will go ok...

My broadband connexion must be rubbish it's telling me that the download to my hard drive is 11.43% completed with 14-hours to go somebody please tell me that there is a better way to do this or it will take a fortnight to unpack it onto my SD Card :(

It takes about 4 hours on a 7MB ADSL service, but the unpacking is a lot faster.

It depends on the speed of your broadband connection, and the specs of your PC (for example, a multicore CPU with 16GB RAM and an SSD will be much faster than an ancient CPU with 1GB DDR and a 5,200rpm HDD)... If you're struggling drop me a PM and I'll lend you one of my USB drives with the required files ready to go (it's a big/expensive one and was a present from my wife, or I'd let you keep it).

Thank you for the offer, I've shut everything else down and it halved the estimated time, still seems too long to me though, I'll see how it goes ;)

When I did the last update (2016) it took hours to download even on a high spec system and 6MB download feed. Why they cant allow you to select the country files you want I don't know. How many people will roam across the whole continent of Europe and beyond?

Fortunately the "unpacking" to the SD Card was much quicker, now to upload onto the unit :)

All done and working!

Download on 150mbs broadband took approx. 55mins.

Unpacking to SD card via USB3 took approx. 38mins.

Uploading to Columbus took approx. 40mins.

Downloaded the file, tried to unpack it to the SD card that came with the car. Of course, the SD is too small to take the unpacked files...... :dull:

Loading onto the unit was also pretty quick and it appears to work to ;)

Will have to sort out the download for next time.

Downloaded, unpacked (onto an SD card that is actually big enough, unlike the one supplied with the car..) and now installed. It took about 45 minutes to load onto the Columbus unit. I just sat in the car with the door ajar while it did its thing.

The update looks pretty good in terms of recent map data. There are some pretty new roads up near Broadbridge Heath and they are on there now.

I noticed loads of icons on the map screen that were previously turned off. A restart of the head unit put things back to how I'd set them.

Hi. I've never owned a car with satnav so two questions about the it, the first being that if there are three free updates (debatable depending on which thread/website you read), if I choose not to update the first and second time, are the updates wasted or an I being smart as it's spreading my free ones until later? Secondly, is the unit using European maps only or world maps etc?

TIA

Three free updates? I was under impression that you get free updates for some time (years)...

Yeah, it all depends on where you read it. It was stated here on a thread they are always free, dealer told me only the 'first few' are free

At the time that the Superb was announced it was stated by Skoda UK that all updates are free for three years. Since then there have been uncorroborated claims that they are now unlimited.

There are ways to download the updates without going through the VIN-entry update portal, so imposing a limit is [currently] pointless, even if you can get the site to work properly.

There are two sets of maps - Europe [EU] and Rest of the World [ROW]. EU covers from Ireland to Russia, Finland to Malta. Installing ROW is pointless for 99.99% of european residents and I'm not sure both sets can be accommodated simultaneously anyway,

Using your VIN in the update portal will automatically select the set of maps for your region - Europe.

Thanks BillyJim. All answered.

apart from mapping updates, is any of the other functionality  in the sat nav system changed ?

I went through numerous options after doing the update to check my personal data was still intact - which it was. There didn't appear to be any obvious changes to the system other than the maps.

Thanks - in that case i will sack it off then as roads dont change that much to warrant the effort at this stage with such new maps for me.

Thanks
