@Mon55 is 'cherry picking' some very good returns from near ideal conditions to display, I'm sure that a period of short urban journeys would not be half so impressive.

I'm just as guilty of the next person of doing that as there is going to be nothing impressive after popping to the shops and navigating their car park :)

Yes, that was just a typical journey I do and which is likely to be representative of the average trip I make. Below is the long term so far according to the car, and in my signature is the Fuelly calculated figure (although I think this is only visible on the non-mobile version of the forum).

thats good in my opinion.. i would be please with that..  the engine just sat at idle makes a big diferance.

Filled up for the second time yesterday and on the first tank of Shell V-Power the mpg was 62.8 from the computer and 57.1 from my calc. This is much better than I was expecting and a maximum trip average of 72. My journeys are typically 45 mile commutes each way. These figures are only a few mpg less than my 1.6 Mk2 Octy. When run in and a slightly heavier foot there should still not be too much difference with the bigger engine and car. And here was me thinking the Euro 6 engine was going to give poor mpg....

no, because on the way back i was not hanging around ! Total Round trip was around 59mpg over 110 miles as per the since fill up reading

Averaging 67mph on British roads is pretty good by most measures, but getting a smidge over 71mpg at the same time is extraordinary!

Which is probably why you posted it, and why not!

 

I'm not doubting the display or you but there has to be some other contributory factor, net loss of height and/or strong tailwind to get that result that has not been mentioned?

Personally I think factors should be mentioned just so that expectations of less enlightened readers might be tempered. It is a common complaint I have of professional reviews here in Australia, when they report on actual consumption they don't even mention the external temperature, or even if they had the air-con on. Makes a big difference here in traffic.

 

There is a stretch of road where I live, similar distance, and unusually, it is possible to average the same speed (high percentage, of 'motorway', dual carriageway and 'high speed' single carriageway (the last bit has to be outside the truck peak times though).

At those speeds I will average 6.8L/100 in one direction and  4L/100 in the other because there is about a 250 metre difference in height at either end.

The consumption of the diesel I used to have was not so heavily penalised on the uphill section as the current petrol.

 

Sometimes I'll do slightly better and sometimes much worse depending on external factors and average speeds and whether I just set the cruise control or drive the car myself.

Bear in mind mine is a different car and engine so I don't expect to match your consumption in a straight 'fight' :)

Here's mine.  I've 12,000 miles done and most of my driving at the moment is short journeys where the engine doesn't heat up fully mixed with the odd longer run.  I don't try to drive in a fuel saving manner so its not too bad considering.  When I go back to my normal commute I'd expect to see another 5-8 mpg easily.

And for comparison here is a long term average for mostly shorter journeys on rural country roads over the winter.

I do a reasonable mix of driving - around town and motorway driving. Trip computer is optimistic by about 2mpg

 

150ps DSG estate. My previous Passat 140ps DSG returned similar mpg, although it carried more weight - approx 300kg in the boot!  The trip computer was similarly inaccurate.

Have to say the responses to this thread have helped restore my regard for diesels.

Similar threads in the Octavia mk3 section (mostly vRS diesel I think) are mostly average to poor figures.

The 170 diesel across the VAG range is known for relatively poor MPG. The Golf GTD suffers the same issue.

 

Fulio app is putting my long term MPG average at 56.

Mk 3 vRS and Mk VII GTD use the the 181 bhp engine, the 170 was in the generation before.  So far my 150 superb is way behind the fuel economy of my 184 FR Leon but it's a much nicer car so the difference of a few MPG doesn't really cause me to lose sleep.

After 1 month and 2263 miles the ave mpg is 62.8 on the computer and 58.0 from my calc. This is generally 40-50mph A-roads with 1 week of 1 in 3 and 1 in 4 hills in the Yorkshire Moors. This is only 4mpg less than my 1.6 Octavia after 100,000 miles so very impressed so far.

Very pleased with the MPG on mine so far. I just finished a shift tonight with mostly town driving and the OBC showed just under 49MPG.

I'm off on a run to Heathrow in it on Monday morning so that will be interesting to see what sort of MPG I get on a run.

We don't get anywhere near the posted figures in our 150. It's a 150 TDI manual 4x4, and we've never got more than mid-40s average (and that's according to the computer).

I know the 4x4 drivetrain will knock it slightly, but not by that much surely ?

It's my wife's car and doesn't get driven hard, doesn't sit in traffic either.

 

Does anyone else get rubbish economy from their 150 ?

I managed to get 82mpg over 50 mile run last week but didnt get chance to take a photo..

I've had my car a little over two weeks and I've done about 750 miles. My commute to work is a 50 mile round trip, a mix of motorway, A roads (50mph) and 10 - 15 minutes town driving in stop/start traffic.

 

I put 50 litres in a couple of days after collecting it (stingy dealer handed the car over with less than 1/4 tank...), and I've just put another 50 litres in. On both occasions I've used Shell V-Nitro.

 

According to the computer I'm getting between 50 and 55mpg (long-term, since refuelling and since start). When I got the car I was hoping to get 50mpg so anything more is a bonus.

 

I consider myself to be a fairly gentle driver, I plod on when I'm on the motorway but I don't hammer the car.

 

My previous car was a Toyota Avensis 1.8 VVTI with the CVT (Auto) gearbox and I used to get around 38 - 40mpg.

Finally managed more than 800 miles on a tank; 849.7 miles on 67.8 litres = 57.0 mpg :)

 

Best economy seems to be achieved in a steady cruise at motorway speeds.

My brim to brim measurement today confirmed 39 mpg. That's a 150 ps diesel with DSG being driven in a relatively sedate manner, 1/3 motorway, rest rural roads. My SII Greenline did approx 15 mpg more in the same conditions. It didn't have all the weekly DPF regenerations either.
