Amundsen + update

Featured Replies

I did get a free update for mine. Only because the Skoda call centre made a mistake telling me I could update for free and they agreed to honour it. They said this is a one off and sort of said 'don't put this idea into people's head on forums'.....'cause it ain't happening. Obviously not those words etc.

The update SD is a one shot only.......and it was still out of date.  Must be years ago that they built that airfield thingy near slough!

  • I spent £100 on a Garmin sat nav and get FREE updates for life  I spent £23000+ on a Yeti and Skoda expect me to pay £170 for a map update.Something is wrong................

VW have obviously realised (at last) that many customers won't specify their expensive sat navs if they also have to pay for expensive updates when there are alternatives available.

The thing I really like about my Garmin (that I use on the bike and in the car) is that I can plan a route on the PC and then download it to the sat nav, which for holidays and trips is all part of the fun.

You can do it to a limited extent with in-car units using way-points but it would be hard work and only any good for relatively simple routes.

Yep, the TomTom plan can be sent to it from yr smartphone/pc/iPad.

I have map table where I can take the device for a complex off-road route which would be torture to attempt in-car.

Hi all,

Sorry for my bad english , but I am French :notme:

I got some problem with the update of my MIB Amundsen

I have submitted my vin number and a new map is available.  I have copied the  SD card from my Amundsen unit on to the hard drive of my computer.  I downloaded the file. Unzip it, obtain a directory "map" and copy on a new SDHC card.

But the MIB doesn't want to recongnize this map with a message like "no valid navigation data".

Does someone can help me, because I don't understand and what I have to do.

Thanks in advnace for your help.

The mistake you are making is that you are using a new card.

You must use the existing card (the Skoda navigation one) or it won't work.

The car companies are living in denial thinking there's a profit in updates.......screw 'em!

We're talking about free updates with this unit!

Must get around to doing mine.

I get one free annual update during the warranty period then they expect me to pay big money for just the annual one......right......

Thanks a lot for your help.

it's a pity not to  have the possibility to change the SD card. I don't understand why.

One more commercial stupidity.

Not commercial stupidity just plain common sense.

If it was possible to copy the map data to any blank SD card there would be hundreds doing that then selling on eBay etc.

If you want to update the old card what's wrong with overwriting it, you will want to be using the new data.

PS: This thread is about the Amundsen + and the updates have to be paid for unlike yours that I take is an Amundsen II and that is entitled to free map downloads.

Just had Daniel from Skoda UK call me in response to my enquiry about missing updates for my Amundsen plus - none since 2013 despite logging into their website and asking the retailer regularly for the past three years.

He made several points:

1. There is no 3 year free update service from Skoda for maps or firmware. Individual retailers may decide to offer this but Skoda UK do not.

2. Skoda UK have no updates showing for this model at the moment. Previous updates have been deleted and they have no details or knowledge of any. (This was in my response saying I have V4 maps in my 2013 vehicle and they are up to V8 now.)

3. Map updates are nothing to do with Skoda and I have to phone Navtech UK and discuss this with them.

As a result I am very disappointed with this startling level of ignorance and unhelpfulness from Skoda and although I love my Yeti I will be looking elsewhere at the next renewal.

Free updates to the maps from the Skoda Update Portal are only available for the Amundsen II, that's post October 2014.

Anything before that will have to be paid for.

So are you agreeing there are no free updates ever for the Amundsen Plus, but there are for the Amundsen II?

Different support for different models, how odd.

The MIB Amundsen infotainment systems are totally different to the previous Amundsen+ and probably a lot more expensive to account for the map updates.

But saying that with the latest Smartlink technology there is no need for map updates as it's possible to mirror the Google and Apple maps from a compatible smart phone to the infotainment screen.

There are no free updates for the Amundsen, Amundsen +, or Columbus. Any updates for these units must be bought. As pointed out, the MIB versions have 3 years free updates from when you buy the car new. It's not odd really. I have an old Tom Tom device which needs paid for updates as and when I decide to do it, but nowadays they come with free updates.

What is MIB?

The Columbus / Amundsen units fitted in the Mk3 Octavia and the later models across the range.

There is interesting material at the gpspower and gpsunderground forums.   Purely for educational purposes, of course, and not all of it is easy to understand without an IT background.

I wonder how much longer it's going to be before the manufacturers work it out that annoying your customers is not a good strategy.

TomTom gives all world maps with quarterly updates for free; they can keep their system.

I don't bother with the one in my 2008.

In the UK, only in the latest (last couple of years) devices, otherwise you need to buy them from TomTom, Western Europe 1 year with updates is about £60, but they often run special offers, esp since they started the free updates for new models.

Ah yes - traffic and speed cameras as well......can pre-plan using smartphone also.......makes manufacturers offerings woeful in comparison AFAIC

Garmin also now offer free 'lifetime' updates. It is why I have never bothered with built in satnavs; nice to have the integrated system but so inferior in their prime purpose to after market Tom Tom's and Garmin's. Also after market models are so much cheaper that you can afford to get new models as they are issued.

In future as Smartphone satnavs apps  are perfected and the screen can be mirrored on vehicles display screens it is surely likely that integrated satnavs will becoming extinct. It's like having a music player with built in music you can't update!!

I guess the manufacturers have to pay a licensing fee (for maps/updates) which they think they can't absorb.

Although I have an Amundsen 2 inbuilt I prefer to use my Nexus 5X and Android Auto, Google Maps etc.  The active traffic routing it very good coupled with the ability to load my camera database onto a background app.  I'm currently running a Google Map beta app, which works well.
