Yeti 1.8tsi advice please

Morning all,

Im about to do a deal on a 1.8 tsi 2010 4x4 yeti, but im struggling to find out much info on that particular engine....

Any advice on what to look for, should I buy one with that engine at all....

Its got full skoda history and 41k on the clock.....

I'm sure the Yeti is thirstier being bigger and 4x4 but the 1.8TSI in our Octavia is giving us 38mpg on average and up to 45mpg on a long run up the A9 (i.e. 3hrs at a constant 50-60mph due to average speed cameras).

 

Check out the Octavia section for lots of scare stories about the TSI engines, oil consumption and timing chain issues so make sure you have a good service history, ours is a 2011 model and is on 84k miles with no issues though.

 

Great all round engine imo but do be aware of the potential issues - not sure I'd get another one with that engine after reading up on the potential problems but as I say I've had no problems with ours and you always get more people posting problems than praise so it usually looks worse than it is!

The 1.8TSI engine MPG cannot -of course- compare to diesels...

Apart from that, it is very quiet and civilized. You hardly notice it at idle, very smooth at high revs and during acceleration.

 

As long as it has done all required service per its mileage you should be ok.

Note that this engine is pushed to 300+ bhp without issues, so it's really bullet proof

I believe my sister has the 300bhp version in an Audi A3. It went bang when only a few months old. Audi wisked the car away and replaced everything under the bonnet.

It hasnt ever been 300bhp stock has it? 

 

The S3 2.0 TSI 300bhp is the same as in the Golf R if thats what you're thinking of? 

 

Or am i missing something? :D

Thanks for the replies and advice.

Fuel consumption I can live with, I was set on buying a 3.2 passat B6, so even the thirstiest of yetis is going to be way cheaper than one of them.

I have spoken to 5 independent VAG specialists, and 4 of them said I was unlikely to have any problems. However, one of them did say not to touch it with a barge pole!

Given that its got FSSH, and im getting a 2 year warranty, im going to give it a go, providing nothing shows up when I go to see and hopefully collect it.

Hi Fisheyonadishey, I have a 2012 1.8tsi DSG Yeti which has now travelled 36,100km or about 22,500miles, which I know is not a lot of miles for its age. For its shape and size I find it economical, but must qualify that with - I don't get caught up in a lot of traffic and living in a warm climate it does not stay on choke for very long. I generally do drive for economical fuel returns and do regularly get 36 - 38mpg on a run and 30mpg around town(at the fuel pump). I am very happy with my Yeti and will certainly keep it for a few more years.

Your first post says 2010 Yeti with 41,000 on the clock. Bearing in mind recent posts regarding DMFs (generally, not just Skoda and Yetis) it might be worth spending a  few minutes carefully reading exactly what the 2 year warranty does and doesn't cover (rather than doing what most of us do, just ticking the box that says "I've read the term and conditions" whilst thinking I'll worry about the boring stuff later). I'm not an expert on warranties but I believe the general principle is the older the car the less that is covered by the warranty. Even if it isn't covered it's not a reason to walk away from the car (after all you probably would be in the same situation if looking at another make and model) but at least you will now how things are.

 

Depending on where you are getting the car from and who is providing the warranty, an hour today researching warranties from reputable providers might be a good investment as you can then decide if what you're being offered is sufficiently comprehensive or whether you can get better elsewhere and negotiate accordingly.

Well I got it! Its veey clean overall, theres a few issues, but there will be with any car that age I guess.

The oil sump looks in bad shape with a lot of rust, but Ive been told by my local mechanic its common on the tsi, and isnt that big a deal to change. For some reason, the engine under tray is missing, but there are no signs of it being used off road.

Theres a bit of rust starting around the number plate lights, im going to see if SUK will do it under the 10 year anti perforation warranty. I wont hold my breath, but fingres crossed!

Fuel consumption! Ive come from a very frugal Seat Ibizia 1.4 sport, and by comparison, the Yeti seems to swine through the juice, but I need to do a proper fill to fill check. Most of my driving is short trips into town on a cold engine, so its never going to be great. Maxidot says 27.odd, though I got 35 on a run, but thats being really, really gentle on the throttle. Aside from the test drive I took it on, I dont think ive revved it over 2.5k yet! Ill report back when I've done a proper check.

So, overal, I love it! Smooth, comfortable, fast, very well equipped (though I was a bit shocked at the lack of factory fitted NAV, I thought this was standard on the elegance) and amazing handling for what it is. Early days though, so we'll see how things go.

Congrats on the car!

 

I think only the L&K has Nav as standard, and indeed if I recall Skoda have been removing some standard spec items over time (e.g. weren't front parking sensors on the Elegance, but now dropped from the SE-L ?).

So by my calculations, my yeti is doing 28.3mpg, maxidot says 29.4, thats mainly short trips on a cold engine, so I cant complain really. Still a bit of a shock coming from my previous 1.4 petrol Vag cars, but I'm pleased I went for the petrol over the diesel. I'll post my longer run mpg when I finally go a bit further than work in it!
