GAP Insurance Recommendations

Featured Replies

Hi

With a build week finally within sight, apologies to those still with long waits, my attention has turned to the subject of GAP insurance.

I have looked at both ALA and also GAP Insurance, both of these have pretty similar prices and I wondered if anyone on here had any experience of either of them?

I took out a policy with gapinsurance.co.uk last week and very impressed, really helpful and a good price too!

The worth of any insurance is how they deal with a claim, I'm guessing that loads of people on here will have purchased GAP Policies but will have never claimed on them (myself included) for what its worth I have had a number of policies with ALA and its helped me to sleep at night ;)

Totally agree, I had a person drive in to the back of me at a roundabout last August.  Stayed with Hastings Direct for insurance as they could not have been more helpful and processed the claim fast with the agent actually increasing the value on the car compared to the assessor and to top it all not even an increase on the premium.  Well until the new car arrives and then it doubles.......

So that's 1 vote each.

I used gap insurance.co.uk they sponsor this site. A return to invoice gap policy including the 10% discount for Briskoda members cost me £90.

The policy read better than the one Skoda were offering.

They were very easy to deal with and by all accounts a good firm come claim time.

Second that. £174 for 4 years on my well specced SEL Exec from Gapinsurance(.co.uk) with a nice Briskoda 10% off.

Hi,

Just to let you know that we offer a product called Total Loss Protection. Whilst it's not exactly the same as your traditional GAP product we feel it can offer some customers a cost effective alternative.

If you'd like any further information then please feel free to drop me a line.

Regards,

Dan.

May I ask am I missing something here. If the car insurance policy has new replacement for say one or better still what does GAP insurance provide over the top of this? Seriously tempted to,go straight back to NFU because of their 2 yr new replacement standard clause. Thanks

Hi Dan, could you please pm me with details of this please. Many Thanks David

I've just just got gap insurance from Easygap.co.uk £239 for a 5 year Combined Vehicle replacement cover for my Superb SEL exec. A good price if you ask me but you only ever know how good a company is until you have to make a claim and I hope I never have to. But only then will you know how good the company is. I just looked for a reasonable price and a UK company (underwritten by The Prudential)

Guys. I'm not very familiar with GAP insurance. Hope some of you will be able to answer it.

Do I have to buy it before I'll collect my car, or can I do it let's say after first year of usage?

I'm asking because my insurance company guarantee within first year new car replacement. So I don't see the point to have GAP really.

After first year of course it's a reasonable option.

Thanks

Generally speaking I think you need to buy the policy within 180 days of purchasing the vehicle.

With us, you'd have one of two options:

  1. Buy sooner rather than later, but elect to delay the start date of the policy by up to 12 months from when the vehicle was first registered, OR
  2. Buy later... we can provide cover up to 12 months after you took ownership of the vehicle (note that once more than 6-months has passed, there's a minor price increase).

However, before you elect to rely on New-For-Old cover from your Motor Insurer and forgo GAP insurance in the first year, its very important that you understand exactly what the New-For-Old cover from your Motor Insurer will and won't do... some New-For-Old schemes are great, but others are far from it with specific eligibility criteria that most wouldn't meet.

See this blog article here for more details.

Feel free to ask any questions.

Best wishes

David

However I have to say I took a policy for the Superb out with David at GAPInsurance.co.uk great policy, was cheaper for me than the usual suspect including ALA and you get a forum discount so it would have been rude not to.

I'm very happy with the advice that I've received and the thoroughness and helpfulness of David to :)

I did a quote yesterday with Click4Gap and GapInsurance.co.uk and got a cheaper quote from the latter.

Picking my car up on Saturday, so will be purchasing GAP once the car is on the drive.

Likewise will be calling soon to get mine, Louise has been more than helpful on both occasions I have spoke with her.

I'll be taking mine with ALA as I've got a policy with them on my current car and they'll pro-rata the unused portion onto my new one.

That makes sense.  We can do the same with our policies too... it's an important distinction between how policies from a broker such as ourselves or ALA etc are superior than many Motor Dealer policies because often the Motor-Dealer-sourced policy can usually either not be transferred in the same way or, if they can, are subject to an administration fee of up to £50.

I can't recall off the top of my head what ALA's position is in relation to admin fees upon transfer, but just so anyone else who is reading this is aware, in the event that you purchase a policy from us and then go on to sell the vehicle before the policy ends, we'll cancel our policy, which in turn will invoke a daily pro-rata rebate of unused premium that you would then be able to either receive back as a refund OR carry forward against the cost of a new policy on a new vehicle.  We don't charge any cancellation, admin or transfer fees of any nature.

On a related note, there are other providers who would (rather than the pro-rata financial approach above) permit you to simply transfer the remaining term of cover (sometimes also subject to an administration fee) to the new vehicle... except when you consider that most companies require that you organise GAP insurance with 6 months of taking ownership of the vehicle (others as little as 3 months whilst a minority like us permit up to 12 months)... transferring the remaining time forward to the new vehicle *could* see you end up with a policy that expires on a date upon which you'd no longer be able to buy a "full" policy for the new vehicle.  It's far better to (effectively) cash the policy in and carry the financial amount forward to another whole new policy!

If I buy online does it not already include the 10% discount?

Unfortunately not yet (although... perhaps fortunately for you if you thought it did, because that means it gets cheaper than you've seen already!)... but the new website we have coming soon will!

In the meantime you can either:

  1. Purchase online at full price, then drop me a msg via this forum with your policy number and I can organise for a 10% refund to be credited back to your card, OR
  2. Call us and purchase a policy over the phone at the reduced price.

Thanks for the assistance. Will be in touch (one way or the other)...

I've just taken out a policy with Totallossgap.co.uk. - They quoted me £92 for 3 yrs cover on my Superb SEL Executive invoice value £24900.

They cover the higher of outstanding finance, or original Net Invoice Selling price: or the cost of a replacement vehicle matching the original specification or an equivalent superceding model if this is no longer available. Also pays up to £250 towards your insurance excess.

I had quite a few quotes this was by far the best value for money.

Worth having a look

Thanks for the assistance. Will be in touch (one way or the other)...

Just called and took out the Invoice Gap policy with 3 years cover.

For the benefit of others reading this, it was for vehicle value of £28k with claim limit of £10k.

With the 10% Discount for mentioning BRISKODA it was only £97.40.
