Is there anything conclusive using 505.01 vs 507.00 oil in the PD?

From what I can gather online the most powerful 1.9 TDI that was produced found in the Ibiza Cupra PD 160 had to be run on the longlife oils, either the 506.01 0w30 or the later 507.00 5w30 spec, the 505.01 5w40 was not the recommended oil.

All 3 are equal in a few areas but 507.00 manages to outperform in more areas.

I've often wondered why no-one bothers to install a simple hydraulic accumulator to hold pre-pressurised engine oil or even a simple electric pump to prime the system before starting, either would reduce lifetime engine/turbo wear to almost insignificant levels.

Sounds like your volunteering ;)

I'm going to call tps this morning and ask where their revised information came from!

Been using Millers Long life, 505.1 and 505.2 approved oil and did notice a slight improvement in both fuel economy and power.  It's only a few mpg on average but when I set the trip from the last service almost a year ago, the VRS has averaged 65mpg, up a few mpg from the oil it previously used which I think was Quantum.  Just bought a litre of Motul 505.1 specific 5w/40 which I understand to be "VW Approved" to top up between services.

Millers isn't an approved oil but it's very good stuff. You using the the 5w40 longlife nanodrive 505.01?

Been doing some more digging and found some further info.

505.01 vs 507 on the image below shows that the VW507 oil standard is *possibly* made up using higher quality base stocks, I imagine the bulk is group III or in Mobil 1's case they use what is apparently unique to them a group III+ (visom) and recently GTL (gas to liquid) with a smaller percentage of group IV & possibly group V (if at all)  used in 507 spec, + a higher additive package for 507 which will be due to the requirements of the oil to reach extended drain intervals. The total base number is slightly higher for the 505.01 oils but I think (not sure) that will be depleted faster over the drain interval compared to a longlife oil which will need to string it out as long as possible and be able to stay in grade. Some reckon oils approved to the VW 507 standard go through a lengthy 650 hour wear test to get VW's approval vs 250 hours for the 505.01 oils although I'm not 100% sure on this.

Either oil will be absolutely fine in the PD engines so it's down to personal preference, I would stick with approved oils as they have undergone the relevant VW tests and met each parameter to get approval but this obviously will come at a cost and not every oil manufacturer will submit their oils for the approval test, hence they will say 'meets requirements' or 'recommended for' instead of 'approved' but that doesn't mean the oil isn't up to the job and some may even exceed the requirements set by VW.

My vRS now has Mobil 1 ESP in the sump  :p

So what is your review after 2 years? I'm in the same dilemma for my India version of MKII - Skoda Laura PD 1.9 L&K 2007 make.
505 01 or 507 00 ? What's your call?

You can refer to my original question undert - (

I tried the long life 3 quantum in my car and agreed after reading on here the engine sounded noisier when warm,  than when using the platinum pd oil in my high miler 1.9 BKC 2005. Plus the cost difference got even wider between the 2 sorts.

So your call is to stick with VW 505 01 for my PD without DPF?

We do not have much options here in India(Bangalore).

I always do fixed interval servicing @10k miles and my opinion stick with the 5w40 Platinum PD 505.01 for cars without DPF. That's what's recommended by VAG too.

Do check country recommendations as local conditions may call for a difference from UK.

After a new purchase of my L& k Octavia 57 plate 2.0 tdi, as it has no dpf it does not need 507 oil.. however every site aka euros/ opie all say vw507.. So I asked Opie, why do you suggest VW507 when its not needed as I do not have a DPF. He said yes your right you do not need VW507 and Vw505.01 is perfectly fine.. But he said 507 is a better oil and offers better protection.. Opie is usually clued up.. so I bought Mobile 1 ESP

VW 507  5w 30 FS III is so easily available anyplace selling oil and not expensive and no fancy Brands needed so why look for anything else.

VW 507 has superseded 505.01, so there may come a point when 505.01 is no longer available once existing stocks are used up.

I would use whichever I could get the cheapest and easiest.

This was a stupid thread in the first place and it's getting more pointless as the years slip by.

used the vw 507 fully synthetic , spec , on my pd130 2004 octy, so no DPF , for over 200k miles ,and was still going strong after nearly 13 years , so any supplier so long as its to the 507 fully synthetic , from my experience ..

a good oil is a cheap mechanic

Second thought of today good oil + good fuel = zero problems (for me anyway). Spending a bit more tends to save a great deal in the long run.
