Problems with first gear, and sometimes reverse

Featured Replies

i was going to say... £22 for the shim with discount. rip off! :D

Edit: What sort of problems are you having then?

thats 3 of us in a row going to try the fix so will be worth keeping track fo whos done it and what its fixed.

Haha, also ordered the gear stick cup holder, the stereo trim and 6x scuttle clips.

Mine is sometimes a arse to get into first at the lights / before setting off. Figured might as well order it as looks easy and ordering other bits anyway. Just now need some circlip pliers...

Oh, I was under car other day and the gearbox sump plug looked a little damp...looks like that's on the list next. Any recommendations for oil, hear the proper stuff works out to be about 80quid.

  • First of all, adjust the gear linkages: http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/202072-how-to-adjust-the-gear-stick-to-gear-box-linkage/     When I purchased my Fabia, it wouldn't go into reverse,

I just changed mine the other day, was around £20. I'll get the link later.

Cheers hutchy, did you need to buy the security spline bit as well or did you already have it?

My 07 plate was already Allen key for the fill and drain plugs.

My 05 plate is security spline, but when orderd replacements they came as Allen key.

But I did already have it yeah.

This is the stuff I used, I bought 3L but 2L was enough in the end. Quite a few members on her use this stuff now.

Brilliant thanks! Just one thing...how do you know how much to put in? Obv isn't a fill level, so do you keep going until it starts coming out of the fill plug?

That's right yeah, it's got a fill and drain hole.

First slightly crack open the top fill plug to confirm it isn't siezed, then remove the drain plug and let it all run out, remove the fill plug at the same time if you want.

Refit the bottom drain plug and fill the box up with oil untill It starts running out the fill plug and refit it.

Yeh that's what I thought thanks! Just need to get the thing sorted then this is the next job!

Mine does that pretty often after being stationary. I have to put it in second and then into first. If that doesn't work I have to press the clutch again.

Well if this works you might have a solution :)

Does the same thing apply to the MPI box though?

Yeah thanks :D

Just fitted the shim today I had about 1-2mm play approx. Better now although not completely cured I think I need to set the linkages and have the clutch bleed then see what's its like.

Have you considered changing the gearbox oil for magic badgers semen, it will make it fasterer and betterer.  :D

Yeah I did that about 6 months ago also the clutch has seen better days but I'm trying to work through the cheaper options first.

Do you still have some movement? You need a bit of play.

Not sure to be honest but it was quite tight but id imagine the required play would be to small for me to detect with my fingers.

That's a little disappointing to hear then really.

thanks for posting up the results anyway

Well I've now done the shim, the oil was replaced 6 months ago so i think tomorrow I'll have ago at setting the linkages and ill get the clutch bled soon. After that I think it will be Tim for a new clutch.

Installed the Shim lastnight, took a lot longer than expected!

There was some play in the bearing beforehand, not as much as I've seen in the videos - but I decided to put it on anyway (many people say its good as a preventative measure also)

I've driven the car a few times, trying to use first and reverse gear as much as possible - I've not encountered the problem yet.

Hopefully it stays this way - I'll take it for another spin tonight and test it. (I'll try and post an update in a few weeks as well)

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who tried to help me - I really appreciate it

1 good results and 1 not so good result then!

My parts have turned up, i just havnt got round to fitting them yet!

  • 3 weeks later...

So set about doing mine today.

I was rather lazy and just put the car on full lock to the left and took a few bolts out the arch liner and pulled it out the way. Didn't even take the wheel off.

Shim and cap

Felt the play in the shaft and could see it moving. Popped the clip out, put the shim in and... Attempted to get the clip back in place. It wasn't having any of it!

It goes over but no amount of pushing and pulling would get it to clip back in properly.

I even took a little bit off the shim but it just wouldn't clip back in, tried pulling the bearing outwards while pushing the clip with a flat screwdriver and it wouldn't go. So end in end took the shim out and it clipped back in fine.

I can only assume I don't have enough play or wear to fit the shim so it's not needed...

Happy days then I suppose.

Just add mine only does it every now and then I've noticed it seems to happen more when it's cold.
