Problems with first gear, and sometimes reverse

Featured Replies

Happy days then I suppose.

Just add mine only does it every now and then I've noticed it seems to happen more when it's cold.

Yep same as mine, and even then its only somtimes. Im finding it not as bad now the weathers hotting up more! might fix itself over summer!

I wonder if you can buy different thickness shims, it has play in it and more than i'd like i might have to take more off the shim to make it thinner myself and see if that fixes it.

As for "over shimming" that has been said, when i spoke to the guy that rebuilds the gearboxes, he suggested the less play the better really!

  • First of all, adjust the gear linkages: http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/202072-how-to-adjust-the-gear-stick-to-gear-box-linkage/     When I purchased my Fabia, it wouldn't go into reverse,

Well I can confirm when I did mine I ended up with virtually no play at all, I actually had to tap the circlip in place with a screwdriver.

I tried all sorts, even pulling the bearing further out with a flat driver while pushing and forcing the clip with another screw driver!

The clip was a real pain to get back on, really not easy - I thought at first that I didn't have enough play to fit the shim, but after around 20-25 minutes of playing around with it it seemed to be on firmly enough.

My gears are still behaving so this seems to have solved my problem :)
