About to purchase a 280 HK Estate...Couple of questions

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

First of all - thank you for this great forum! I've litterally read hundreds of posts these past few weeks and the amount of information is staggering. I figured its time for me to contribute - even if its just in the form of a question.

Since wife got pregnant and we decided we needed a new car this fall, we've been test driving every different car I can think of. After a close call between Mercedes E Class and Skoda Superb, its (Amazingly enough?) been decided that the Superb is the better choice for us.

It give us a lot more options as far as specs and budget and so far we've selected pretty much everything on the options list, except a couple of options which I am curious whether or not its worth it.

Superb III Estate 280HK 4x4 - Style (Im from denmark - Style is the top options pack, but it doesnt include as much as compared to the UK/other countries).

What I am trying to figure out is whether the following is worth it? Bear in mind our car prices are insane - we have approx 175% tax on top of the regular price. So you're almost buying 3 cars! This Skoda almost fully loaded will cost about 650.000 DKK - which is about 65.000 pounds. (Just divide by 10). Now - when the options are that expensive they better mean something!

Dynamic Chassic Control  - 1800 pounds

Or

Sport suspension - 380 pounds

I need to decide on one or the other, as I think it improves the look greatly when it lowers the car somewhat. 15mm sport suspension vs 10mm DCC

Smart light assist, Blind spot assist, Lane assist - 1370 pounds

Are they worth it? Any experiences with it? Does Smart light assist change the look of the headlights?

Double bottom trunk - 290 pounds

Virtual pedal for trunk - 310 pounds

Smartgate - Apple carplay? - 170 pounds

Is it true that this cannot be fitted with the Columbus navigation - large screen?

Appreciate any information or tips you can give on the above, as we're planning on buying it this sunday or monday! Looks like delivery will be somewhere around september i've been told.

Thanks!

You can forget the double boot (trunk) floor straight away: I played with it on a demo car and it’s a real pain. Besides, what’s the point?

Apple Car play? It's OK, but I wouldn’t pay extra for it.

Virtual pedal? Again, cute, but how often do you have both hands full?

There: I’ve saved you DKK 770,000

That’s the good news. The bad news is I rather like all the other more expensive stuff. Except I was not even aware of a 'sport suspension' option. Presumably that's covered by the DCC?

I know that huge Danish car tax goes back decades, but am surprised it has held up within the single European market.

Hi Radjan

Welcome to the forum. Good call on the Superb. I'd agree with Eurotraveller. I have virtual pedal but not found reason to use it yet. DCC is a nice option. Distinct difference between Sport and Comfort mode in ride. Sport mode isn't too harsh. Not sure on the Sport option suspension but the Combi would look sweet lower. Maybe the Sport option for the 280?

Blind spot assist is useful. Lane assist I have turned off. It works well but I don't often use multi lane roads so don't see the point of having it on.

The sunroof is a nice feature and floods the cabin with light. I think that is worth considering. KESSY is great (as its new to me). Very novel touching the door handle to lock an unlock.

Let us know how you get on.

I would say the variable boot floor is well worth it, as it's the only way to have a flat load area.

As for DCC, I find the softer 2 settings very soft personally on country roads, but nice on the motorway for a longer drive - generally just leave it in sport - but then I have come from cars with a much harder ride. Can you get to try the sport suspension option? It wasn't an option when I ordered.

Welcome!

Smart Light Assist does change the look (it provides the eyelash style LED strips on the headlight cluster)... And personally the BSD is the best of the three assist features in the pack. I went for the SLA/BSD/LA combo pack and am happy I did.

Me too for the variable boot floor. Had it on my last 3 cars and would def miss it. Flat load area. Easy to fold up for more space and a good place to hide all the Mrs's crap ....

Thanks for the quick responses!

Eurotraveller : The Apple car play - do you know if its available when you have Columbus navigation though? (Large screen?). And yes, Danish tax - how that has survived is beyond me. We are quite jealous upon UK, Sweden or the US. Funniest part is, we have a green tax exemption for cars that are electric, so everyone is buying Tesla S here because they arent taxed! Theres so many of them driving around its ludicrous. :)

The sport suspension is just that - sport suspension and lowered by 15mm. Its an option we have here in Denmark apparently and its not the same as DCC as that is a separate option. I'll probably have to try and see if there is a model with it to try - just afraid it may be too stiff and that is why i'm leaning towards DCC. The car is first of all a family cruiser, so it would be awful if its so stiff that the wife and baby won't be comfortable.

KESSY - that also adds automatic door locking/open? In our order list it becomes standard by week 22, but there is a second option to have Kessy with alarm system - i wonder if the standard 'KESSY' only has start-stop button and "KESSY with alarm system" is the door locking/open as well? Hmm. I'll ask my dealer sunday.

The boot floor does sound useful as far as it being completely flat...

And I may just have to look into Smart Light assist and the other 2 - especially if it changes the headlights for the better look-wise. Strangest thing - the first thing the wife looks at is the headlights and rear lights when we went car shopping. If they didn't suit her, then it was rejected right away! :notme:

Carplay comes as standard on all models in DK ;-)

Ahh yes, now I get it. Its not very clear in the options list - it shows as an extra feature even on the style pack. But I can clearly see its included in Columbus on this page here: http://www.skoda.ie/models/new-superb/infotainment

Thanks!

Comes with Bolero and Amundsen as well :-)

I've got the variable boot floor and it's a clever design. Pull it up and back and it drops down to the bottom of the boot. Pull it again and it comes up to create a flush floor level with the dropped rear seats and loading lip. Worth the money IMO.

Smart light assist is a good option. The system itself is clever and it adds a distinctive look to the headlights.

I've already used Virtual Pedal on several occasions and I've only had the car 4 days!

I've come back to my car with arms full of stuff and the keys in my pocket. A wiggle of a foot and the boot is open, brilliant!

I considered the panoramic sunroof but it's an expensive option, even more so in Denmark with your crazy taxes.

DCC is really nice. I was lucky to have it as standard on my L&K but now I've used it I would seriously consider paying for it as an option.

Not sure if your car has the LED plus package as standard. If not, select it. Really adds a premium look to the cabin.

(That's not a default colour, that's a result of my VCDS tinkering)

Yes. Its just odd - if you look at the 'Extras' list on the skoda.dk site, it shows "Smartlink -  including Wireless RSA app and Media Command (Control of Infotainment system from the backseat)" as an extra feature at 1700 DKK only available to the "Style" pack with Columbus navigation. My dealer has specifically said that this feature isnt available...or maybe it is already included?...

Yea, I can definatély see that Smartlight is a must - especially since my wife thinks headlights/rearlights is the most important thing for the car look wise :)

The double boot floor will also be added - sounds very useful. I am just not sure on the DCC yet - its 1800 pounds...but I worry I'll regret it if I dont, and at the worst have a car that i'm annoyed with if the suspension is too stiff. Part reason for buying this car is also that we can include almost everything and have a nice big engine...so i'm also at the point where...why not!

The LED package is included and yes...that does look nice!

Dstev2000: Do you have any pictures of your car with DCC? Just curious how it looks as far as how lowered it is...Although I'm sure 5mm isnt going to make that big of a difference.

Thanks!

Cant comment onf the DCC but you are buying a combi not a porsche, i really dont see the point. The double boot floor is pointless and adds more weight, the auto bott is likewise, pointless and slow to operate. Kessy can be useful bit not absolutely essential, and smartgate might be useful if you can figure out how to use it.

Best options thus far have been the sunroof (essential) and ACC.

Just wanted to say Smartgate is not Apple CarPlay. Smartgate is an extra accessory that plugs into the car, has its own WiFi and can get telemetry to your mobile phone. Not worth it for that price, you would use it for couple of days and then forget about it. Can also be installed afterwards, you can buy it online.

I really like smart light assist, that is the only option i would select out of these you mentioned. Maybe in a package with other assists. Lane assist is also cool if you drive on motorways a lot like me.

Here's a picture of my L&K combi with DCC, not sure if you can tell is lower. We bought the car to fit all of the baby stuff in. If you can stretch to the virtual pedal for the boot, I'd certainly recommend it.

I have driven superb with sport chassis and there most likely is not a single person out there that thinks it is too stiff. Quite the opposite. I have normal (not s-line) sport chassis in my A3 and that is much firmer than the superb's equivalent. But the DCC has gained quite a lot of criticism in car media (some testdrivers suffered sea sickness).

Appreciate all the input - appears the dealer has a Superb with the sport suspension, so I'll try it and see how it is before i consider DCC.

Oh really? Suffered "sea sickness", did they?

Yet more journalist bovine excrement. Too much corporate hospitality at the launch event the evening before, more like.

+1 if you want / need a flat load area (essential with an estate IMO) then the variable boot floor is great.

Virtual pedal is useful when the car is dirty (OK it can also be opened by the remote... but with KESSY there is no need to remove the key from your pocket)

DCC... well IMO the comfort setting is far too soft on anything but a straight road, as the car does then wallow through the corners, mine is set to sport permanently and it is not too harsh, but at least you have the option to soften it up for your passengers if they think it is too harsh.

SLA... essential IMO it is much better than without, and looks better too.
