SD card format and music ?

Featured Replies

I want to get an SD card for my Octavia so I can have a bit of music to listen to.

Any recommendations on a decent 32gb card please.

Is it just a case of dragging and dropping music files from my computer onto the card.

Cheers.

You dont need huge transfer rates to play mp3s so any old SD-card will do.

Unless you will use it for other things as well I would just buy the cheapest from Amazon.

If you decide to use it for something else in the future it will probably be out-of-date anyway or the size will be rediculously small compared with what you can buy for the same price.

I have 2x 32Gb cards so I can have my music separated from the "radio friendly" music for passengers.

I'd suggest something like this https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01469QE3M/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awd_rRt5wbXVZ3Z2Q

Yes, you can just copy them over and away you go.

You can get a SanDisk or Kingston class 10 card for less than half the price & buy a couple of pints refreshment to celebrate a job well done with the rest.

Yep wasn't stating the price was good just recommending the card as I have a few of them and generally get class 10 if the price isn't horrible as you never know what they will be used for in their lifetime

Am I safe just buying a standard sized SD Card - not micro or mini?

I would suggest a standard size card - sometimes with a mini or micro, they don't quite make contact with the adapter and you have to remove and reinsert - and it's just something else to go wrong.

And full sized SD cards are generally cheaper for the same size too.

I've got the one that the link applies to and when you have 18Gb of music to transfer it makes it quick and it reads it nice & quickly too.

Is £14 for a blisteringly fast SDXC card, I  think that's not too a high a price to pay for a branded product and if you get it from Amazon, you can get it the next day and any issues you can soon send it back too.

Also if you have a DSLR you can swap it out and use it for that too.

Thanks Guys.

Yes - as has been said, you can just drag drop or copy the mp3s onto the SD card.  However, it's worth thinking about the folder structure a bit as you navigate through your music by folders and files - rather than based on Artist->Album->track based on ID3 tags embedded in the files, as you would on an iPod for example.

However, if you use iTunes or similar it's very likely your files will be structured that way anyway, so it will all work out as you want but I have experienced some oddities, so you may need to clean it all up a bit for copying.  Also, depending what type of computer you use, you may need to remove hidden and deleted files, which are not hidden on the Bolero screen, so it can look rather untidy.  This may not be a problem on Windows computers but with Macs and Linux systems it is.

These days I think 64GB are the best value, and a faster card will be quicker to write.

A 64GB card will come formatted exFAT and you may as well stick with that.

Beware of fake and forged cards available through fleaBay.

You can browse by artist, album etc. on Bolero and Amundsen too.

I'm using a 16GB PNY one I got in a twin pack for my camera a few years ago without any problems.

In terms of format I've just copied music from my iTunes library onto the card and it's all played apart from some really old stuff that's protected.

I had a couple of minor issues though, some albums needed the artwork adding manually - I did this using Windows Media Player, and some albums with multiple CD's would play all track 1's, then all track 2's etc. It seemed like the Amundsen was using the filename rather than the ID3 track number tag, so I renamed the files.

Sorry - I was away for a couple of weeks so have only just noticed this interesting comment on my earlier post.  Could you clarify this a little more for me please?  On my Bolero I can only browse by folders - unless I've missed something.  However, usually the folder typically reflects the Artist->Album hierarchy, so in effect you are browsing in that way.

Or have you found way for it to base the browsing structure on the embedded ID3 tags, regardless of how the folders are organised?  Of course it does understand these tags, as it's the tag information that is displayed for each track on the Now Playing screen, so it could easily base its browsing on them rather than folder hierarchy.

Browse back up to the top level of the folders and you should see the option to "Show database view".

Right I've transferred some music onto my SD card and it works fine apart from one slight niggle.

Basically I made a folder up on the card called "mix songs" by dragging and dropping various tracks into the folder.

However on the stereo they are all shown as seperate tracks as opposed to the folder ??

Any ideas why ?

Many thanks for that.

I've just looked and I don't see it on mine.  It's a Jun 14 (MY15) vRS TDI with the standard Bolero.  The top level of the folders just shows the contents of the root directory on the SD card and then one more up from there lists the sources (SD Card, BT Audio, CD...).

I wonder whether this has changed since i got mine and, if so, whether a software update would give me this feature?

Do you need 32GB ?   I use 16 and my entire music collection fits on it with 75% to spare.

Yup.... I've got around 300gig of music on various hard drives that I like to swap about and listen to.

You need to be sure that the 'Album' tag for the files are all the same, and are the same as the folder name. You can do it using MP3tag, or via File/properties/details.  Be careful though , before changing the tag be sure you have the album artwork

PS be sure they are not not WMA files, despite what the manual says they don't all read. Use MP3

The AAC/MP4 codec is better than MP3
