How far would you drive to view

Featured Replies

a car of the make/model and colour you wanted?

I'd thought that my limit would be 200 miles but I think I'd be tempted to go a little further for something that looked just right.

Up to 30 minutes drive if looks decent.

Almost a sure-fire buy is up to 1 hour travelling. (FSH, lots of receipts, low mileage, good condition, good price etc.)

I've got a relative up near birmingham now, so I would also consider the above FROM birmingham as well as London.

Reckon I'd die of old age waiting for a decent car within half an hours drive..

I'm looking at a minimum of 120miles at the moment.. there's a no history, rough inside, no history car just over an hour away but I need a better bet than that,

I've travelled to London and Gloucester (+ Geneva Motor Show last week) to see cars that weren't available at my local dealers!

Warrington to Newquay. Brought a glass of coke looking over the beach and a vRS 10 mins later :) Drove home that night too.... the good old days ;)

Treat it as a weekend away at the city, or day ;)

I drove to Bristol (from E.London) for a pint once. Derby too, but we stayed overnight for that.

Furthest I've been for a car was, I think, Southend to Retford. Mk3 Astra Esate 1.8 16V we got off ebay.

I want a Mk1 vRS estate in black this time. There was a few about a week ago but they seem to have fallen off the internet for the most part now.

Problem I have is that I have to wait a few weeks (estmate is 3 at the minute) til I have anything to spend. Although I am thoroughly enjoying my time here in the meantime, should stand me in reasonable stead when I have a car in front of me.  B)

I travelled from Newcastle to Sevenoaks for my last car. Got the train down and drove back the same day.

I travelled from oldham to Peterborough (3hrs) for my mk2 VRS last year as it was the only one online that had everything I wanted, red, cruise control, arm rest, climate control, rear parking sensors. Went down in my Monte around 6pm and came back in a vRS the next day, certainly worth the drive.

Aldershot to Aberdeen to look at my current e39, spec and history I wanted.

Train from Edinburgh to Reading to take a look at an exPolice Volvo T5 854. I really miss that car, the police had done a load of upgrades to brakes and performance but I couldn't afford the 15mpg any longer.

Looks like we'll be going to Birmingham or further south, possibly London way to pickup the next car as they're not that common up here.

Im pretty fussy about what i buy, it has to be right.

So distance isnt an issue tbh

If I wanted a focus or something else "off the peg" then I'd not go further than an hour.  If I wanted something bespoke then I'd expect to travel a lot further.  Would also travel further for a more expensive car than spending a small amount on a run-around.

Southern Holland to Peterborough having bought new blind without even having seen the same model in the flesh before, did the same for Octy vRS and hadn't even seen the Mk2 FL model at the time let alone sat in or driven one ever until I got in to drive it home.

I've come to the conclusion that some of you guys are probably a little mental.

Fair play

I travelled from Bristol to Stonehaven (Aberdeenshire) for car parts only, so for the right car I guess I have no limit?!!? (Was an excuse for a night away in a hotel with the missus also :p )

Just depends how much you want something.

I did a 500 mile round trip one day for a bit of trim for a bike i had at the time.

Its all good fun :D

Me and a mate went to Budapest 2 years ago to buy a 135 rapid.. flew out of £50 each met the guy and drove it back through Slovakia, Czech Republic, Germany etc over 4 days to shropshire..

Was an adventure and some memories to look back on lol.

nowhere is too far in my book if its what you are looking for and the seller seems honest.

Thats brill! Ahaa.

The sellers honesty is the big thing. Ive driven 4 hours one way to see a bike, only to find its not 'immaculate' like he said on the phone and infact abit rough! Not interested, drove back. Wasted journey. Urgh.

I got mine from Preston, spent the rest of the day in Lytham St Anne's. I didn't have to worry about that one though as it was a pre reg.

I've travelled over 150+ miles to view cars that were OK when I got there, but only if they provide enough info on the car etc. I've travelled down to London more recently to view a complete waste of time of a car. Never go far now unless it's a real good one, but then I'm mostly done with buying anymore cars.

Depends how special the car is. Boggo motor, maybe 100mi.

Friends of mine did Stirling to Bournemouth to look at an R32 which they did buy. 470mi each way according to Google.

I did 290 miles to buy a VW Beetle in just the right colour and spec. And then did 270 miles to buy my van. They were one way miles so the return journey was the same again.

Max I've done is an 800 mile round trip.  Seller knew I was coming a long way.  Needn't have stopped really, but it was only when I got there that I appreciated 'rust free' and 'immaculate' were subjective, rather than factual statements  :dull:

My last CRX came from Derby - that was about 220 miles away.  As others have said, I'm not really bothered about distance, for the right car.

Gaz

... when I got there that I appreciated 'rust free' and 'immaculate' were subjective, rather than factual statements  :dull:

and this is why I don't bother travelling more than an hour now.
